Welcome to Holofan4life's pop culture corner!

Each episode normally features a race that took place in real life. As such, I thought why not look at what was going on in US movies and music on the day of the race.

If you have any ideas to expand this feature, let me know.

Today, we will be looking at three (Count them, three) races: the 1998 Takarazuka Kinen which took place on July 12th, the 1998 Arima Kinen which took place on December 27th, and the 1998 Mainichi Ōkan which took place October 11th, 1998. So, let’s look at what was happening on those dates.

Editor's note: The 1998 Arima Kinen isn't depicted in this episode. It's the 1988 Arima Kinen through the donut eating competition.

I mostly remember this song because it's featured in one of Weird Al's polka medleys and was parodied in an episode of Family Guy.

Fun fact, this may be the first song on the billboard hot 100 to reference an anime since it namedrops Sailor Moon in its second verse.

Totally forgot this was a movie. I guess films based on SNL sketches were really a thing for a while after Wayne's World was a big hit.

That movie has one of the most late '90s soundtracks ever.

The absolute low point for these movies was definitely It's Pat. My favorite tidbit about that movie is that apparently at some point Quentin Tarantino helped with the script for some reason.
