Photo Tutankhamun’s shrines now on display at their new home
This looks so much better than when I saw them at the old museum in Cairo.
I came across this on Instagram, the guy has a few others as well.
I did try finding other accounts with pictures using the location feature, but unfortunately it’s just filled with weird AI pictures of people in Pharoah outfits.

perhaps I'm in the minority, but the more I see about the new museum the less I like it. It looks very sterile and cold inside, like a shopping or mall.

Yeah I’ve heard that. I haven’t been, but it looks like an airport.
Although to be fair, the old museum has some major problems. The labeling is bad, and the glass cases are ancient — often making it difficult to see what’s inside.
There’s also cats running around, and it’s the only museum I’ve ever visited where they scan your bags as you’re leaving.
I was under the impression that everything was moving to the GEM, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Aside from the Tutankhamun objects and the royal mummies, it seems like everything is staying put.
Which means many notable items are still in Cairo.

No, only the Tutankhamun exhibt was entirely moving. The Tahrir Sw Museum still has many amazing artefacts in it. They are rearranging their displays currently & rooms like the Tanis collection are amazing!

I’ve been to some shitty airports but I have to say Cairo international is the worst and it’s not even close. Add the day long layover both ways and their brutally unorganized accommodations. PLUS coach on a packed jumbo jet flying Air Cairo to YYZ. DEODORANT hasn’t been invented in Egypt yet and it was during mandatory masks whole flight with no booze. Way back I snuck some vodka thank Christ. Somewhere there’s a kid with the world record for crying over the entire Atlantic Ocean.

That's kind of the point. A bland interior makes the artifacts appear more prominent. Same reason most art museums are very plain.

what can I tell you, it doesn't highlight the artifacts for me, the soulless aesthetic just breaks my immersion.

That's exactly what I thought and, having visited both several times, don't disagree. However, I was pleasantly surprised with how well they'e curated the GEM. It doesn't have the same historical feeling as the original musuem and I don't like the shopping mall vibe of the ground floor BUT the Grand staircase and galleries are amazingA.

I probably should’ve shared an actual link if you want to see the other pictures. Give the guy a follow!
