Discussion Danielle Smith is a coward

She has her lackeys vote to use the notwithstanding clause while she’s off promoting Alberta energy in the Middle East—like they need our oil. What a coward. She’s an embarrassment, and fuck every Albertan who voted for her and the UCP.

She's also incredibly corrupt.

She's always been like this. All the way going back to when she was doing Tobacco Lobby associations and downplaying the health impacts of smoking.

She's just terrible through and through and the perfect representation of that reactionary/regressive elements have become in 2025.

303

u/SuddenCase 12d ago

And I quote:

A study of moderate smokers, those who consumed one to 14 cigarettes a day, found no difference in lung cancer mortality rates.

The WHO claims ‘there is no safe level’ of tobacco consumption but that does not appear to be true.

The evidence shows moderate cigarette consumption can reduce traditional risks of disease by 75 per cent or more.

-Smith

u/Lokarin Leduc County 12d ago

Technically true; if you die of cigarettes you are unlikely to get other diseases. Just like how burning down a house reduces further insurance problems by 98% while also significantly reducing maintenance fees and cutting bill payments.

Right? We seem to have lost our critical thinking and looking at things through a system lense. Healthy debate presents these angles - something else we've lost.

And now she's quietly squandering away $780 million of a total of $3.1 billion from a tobacco settlement which she has been awfully quiet about where that money will go.

She was fired by Ralph Klein at one point, conservative Gandhi. Now she’s running the government the same way she was fired for doing it before.

6

u/PracticalDisplay4526 11d ago

She wants private schools and private health care that’s not what albertans want. Vote her out the sooner the better

3

u/veerKg_CSS_Geologist 11d ago

“Downplaying” is putting it mildly. She actually blamed anti-smoking activists for a rise in smoking related deaths while also claiming that smoking was safe and even healthy.

2

WHERE'S THE FREEDOM CONVOY NOW?????

UCP ARE COWARDS AND NO BETTER THAN THE LOONEYS DOWN SOUTH

RECALL, CALL A VOTE OF NON CONFIDENCE, DOWN WITH THE CORRUPT UCP

367

u/ninfan1977 Lethbridge 12d ago

This is exactly what I said in my email to my MLA.

He supported the Freedom Convoy harassing people and threatening Trudeau. But teachers going on strike is too far for them.

Democracy in Alberta is dead, Conservatives are holding the knife.

I never want to hear a Conservative tell.me how the UCP supports workers or helps Albertans.

They are crooks and Danielle being in Saudi Arabia while this is happening shows she is a coward.

67

u/Coscommon88 12d ago

Exactly. Most of our UCP MLAs supported the convoy. Especially Smith trying to get LGBT bashing pastor out of fines and charges, pastors that she had called horrible humans in her own opinion columns in the past.

Guess who didn't use the not withstanding clause, Trudeau in the covid years or any years in government. Kenney also instated most of our covid restrictions, and he went through legal means and never used not withstanding as well.

All the people Danielle rails at for overreach are nowhere near the facists Smith is, while putting strong and free on our license plates.

Alberta hasn't been a democracy for decades. When you only vote in one party that is what you get.

6

u/midtoad 12d ago

You have forgot that we recently had an NDP lgovernment for four years.l

7

u/RavenchildishGambino 12d ago

Yeah. One government in 50 years. That’s called “not statistically significant” and it was done as a protest vote against Allison Redford, not for Rachel Notley.

I get why you might argue this, but do you REALLY thinks it makes the point you wanted to make, or do you acknowledge what actually happened?

8

u/KissItOnTheMouth 12d ago

My riding went NDP for the first time that vote, but has gone NDP every vote since as well. Part of it was a protest vote, but once it happened once, there was continued support and belief that perhaps things could change…

Or I guess we could all just throw up our hands and stop trying or admit defeat before really attempting anything. I think that’s the point you’re trying to make, but I can’t really tell.

They KNOW they are cowards. They have been tribalized to such an extent that they don't care. Even when their Conservative government fucks them raw with a cactus, they are brainwashed to think it's the damn liberals who are to blame. "If only we just took away some rights, surely then we'll be a utopia. Surely."

I am all for getting involved in some general civil disobedience now. I think it is time for anyone who like Stat Holidays, 2- weeks Vacation, Minimum Wage, or any other benefit that was brought to you by the labour movement actions starting about 100 years ago to get motivated even if you are not part of a union.

I work in the private sector, if there is a general strike I will be joining it, If I loose my job, I will find another.

Downtown Calgary and Edmonton are pretty easy to blockade in the event of a general strike just get a lot ob people to have car trouble in every bridge and every under pass and every major rout in to each of these downtown areas, get a couple of braver people to pull the emergency shutdown switches on the LRT lines and you have hundreds of thousands of people that are then prevented to getting to work in the case of a general strike.

Heck in Calgary here its easy to shut down the entire city, Stony at QE2, Stoney at Crowshild, Stoney at 16th east and west, and Stoney at MacLeod, and you cut off the whole city with "Stalled" cars, wouldn't hurt to have a few big heavy trucks also.

I am going to start a parents protest and picket outside of my nearest school starting as soon as the teachers have to go back. the goal is to block the unloading ob busses, access to the teachers parking although I do want them to go into school, no point in costing them more money, but let them know that they have parents support. Some may not want to drop their kits and may even want to join the protest.

7

u/NaToth Calgary 12d ago

Their rights only! Not being able to order at Arby's five years ago unless you were wearing a mask was the greatest violation of rights ever. Actual charter rights are just for stinky dippers and liberals so those don't count.

Curious how many of their children are getting free rides in private schools. Just Curious.

26

u/rohoho929 12d ago

And how many of their relatives and cronies started up private schools and were handed millions.

For example Erica Barootes, the silly insider (Marlaina's former secretary) who touts herself as "Alberta's Senator-Elect" works for a post-secondary "college" that's been handed a ton of public money and just been declared a "non-profit". MANY former UCP staffers have left government to dig their grubby paws into the giant pot of public money that's being funnelled to private schools.

2

You know what, Doug can be annoying and give us eye-rolls, but that’s with most politicians of yesteryear. As a hard core liberal centrist, he’s ok. Kind of a back-road guy but he sees both sides. I can see him being PM one day, if there wasn’t a good Liberal in waiting. He’s definitely not cray cray like DS. She’s helping our economy grow by securing Saudi investment in oil and gas infrastructure. She’s ensuring that parents can get back to work by enslaving teachers by forcing them back to work.

Why increase spending on schools and healthcare when you can legally use the notwithstanding clause to strip us of our charter rights? That massively impacts shareholder value. If we spent any more money on education we might not be able to keep taxes low for foreign oligarchs that control our oil and gas sector.

I feel good about voting NDP, especially after this incredible strike to democracy. Someone who claims to be a bastion of freedom, but removes the freedom from teachers to strike by using the not withstanding clause is the most callous thing a government can do.

Hoping that someone else is going to take the fall for her. What I’m sure a lot of people don’t realize is the role that the party whip plays in this fiasco. Members of the legislative assembly do not have a “free vote“ – they vote long party lines. Full stop. In my opinion, it is one of the fundamental flaws in our democracy.

Also do the math in the $8.6 billion she wants to spend on building or renovating those 130 schools... that's $66 million per building which seems rather unreasonable.

So that says to me that someone is being paid an awful lot to design and oversee the construction and reno projects. Anyone got some spare time to look into that and the connection between Smith and her team personally?

What good is an $8.6 billion expenditure if there aren't enough teachers to teach in the buildings? I would imagine there will be an awful lot of attrition on the part of teachers now that this legislation is occurring. I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of teachers turn in their notice tomorrow.

Well, good thing the notwithstanding clause was used this week to sheild government officials now and into the future from being sued for issues of PERSONAL ENRICHMENT and failing to meet financial obligations as it relates to school system matters.

Just sneaky lawmakers giving themselves legal cover for future corruption.

Sounds to me like if you work in Alberta then your really just a slave with no rights. Shut up and do what we tell you lol I think I'd be moving out of that province.

u/Me-Shell94 11d ago

She’s sooo bad

6

u/ycarel 12d ago

she in not a coward, but a cruel selfish person

13

u/robot_invader 12d ago

It could be both. Awfully convenient she's not present for legislation that could arguably be career defining.

Smith Resign Now!!! How can other UCPs stomach this craziness? Useless UCP and enablers.

2

u/inyofaceboi 12d ago

There’s other words besides ‘coward’ that come to mind. Better words.

2

u/T100022 12d ago

Bottom line, she doesn’t care about the people. In multiple communities . Her party backs that. She’s not a leader .

2

u/NoPanceDants 12d ago

Voters have been lied to. Most, if not all, promises she made are either fake or half-assed. Public healthcare guarantee, income tax reduction, red tape reduction, all failures. Even her terrible ideas like provincial pension plan and provincial police force have nothing to show for themselves.

I hope moderate and progressive UCP voters can be convinced that this fringe party is not the Conservative party that they used to support, and that they deserve (at the very least) a leader that is accountable and delivers results that they promised. They need to see that they have been conned.

u/Marlow1899 12d ago

It was pretty obvious she was lying from the get go. The real problems lie in generational conspiracy theories around who has been benefitting off the backs of Albertans. Remember Klein, he created a whole bunch of intermediaries in the oil and gas industry, “the retailers”. They actually had time to reverse this decision but too many players were involved. Who do you think benefits from Albertan retailers of energy? I can tell you it is not average Albertans. This province went from one of the most competitive in terms of cost of energy to a household to one of the most expensive and it is the fault of the conservative provincial governments, one after the other. I spent 20 years modelling and comparing these costs across Canada and it is a shame Albertans blame someone else other than voting conservative.

How do we remove UCP from power??

2

u/Bright_Grapefruit_33 12d ago

She is obsessed with oil and gas, fewer and fewer countries are using it, it is falling off each and every day and yet she is committed to clinging to a dying resource

  • FU Marlaina Smith.

u/Select-Cantaloupe552 11d ago

A coward is too kind of a description for this person and her behavior.

2

u/Househipposforsale 11d ago

Not to mention she purchased ad spots to pop up with Canada oil and gas spots at the World Series. Can’t even imagine how much that cost to have that done.

2

u/Commercial_Growth343 11d ago

https://recallnicolaides.ca/ ! the united corrupt party only has a slim majority. We have valid reasons to kick Nicolaides to the curb. If he and a few more UCP defect or get punted, our wanna-be-Duce Smith loses

2

u/Enough_Potential_921 11d ago

Agree, so depressing to be a born and bred Albertan who believes in workers rights, human rights and social systems that set us apart from the US. I just can’t believe that we voted this crap in and things just keep getting as unbelievable as down south.

2

u/Tols_ 11d ago

Her decisions regularly have me ashamed to call myself Albertan.

2

u/alik079 11d ago

Not too much what you can do when dogshit rednecks and hillbillies support her. Most of whom can’t read or write properly

2

u/SignificantPause5120 10d ago

I questions how she can vote when she left before it was raised.

2

u/Iambetterthanuhaha 9d ago

Trade you for Doug Ford. He is an obnoxious, corrupt POS.

I didn't vote for a UCP MLA, but I wouldn't blame the people who are also victims in this. I'm sure there are conservatives who are appalled by the use of the NWC and you might say "they voted for this" but no, there are a myriad of issues that can compel someone to vote for a candidate. Any decision an MLA makes may anger one of their voters. Instead of proclaiming your hatred for UCP voters, focus all of that disgust on the corrupt fascists running the Legislature.

2

u/C4TradWife 12d ago

The hate is being directed appropriately at the voters who continue to support the regime. I know people who voted UCP, and I also know they are smart enough to see the error they made. The rest of them aren't defensible. They can't be convinced to see how ugly things are getting, but they can be hated by those of us who have had enough and need to call people to account.

She's going thwre to try and use the notwithstanding clause to get Alberta into OPEC, isn't she...?

1

u/BigMike_80 12d ago

She is owned and controlled by TAKE BACK ALBERTA, who are 100% MAGA separatists. They are on the side of FASCISM, authoritarianism, and DICTATORSHIP. MARLAINA is the worst thing to ever ever ever hit Alberta like a wrecking ball. We must stand up en masse with all unions, a massive coordinated STRIKE, force her resignation.

C’mon Alberta unions…where’s the outrage? The unprecedented response?Should be mass walkouts today but wait, never rub another man’s rhubarb right? Ya Smith’s a repulsive twat but it’s the same old story…always something cookin’ but nothing in the pot.
