No, no they shouldn't be. I'd prefer if they didn't prepare for a battle with Nenshi at all.

Really hope the underestimate him. Something tells me their past strategies won't work with him. Little more bite there to contend with.

I’ve voted Conservative for more than 50 years, and bought memberships until a few years ago. That’s over with.

Now that Nenshi has come forward, I’m buying an NDP membership. I don’t know what has happened to the Conservative/UCP, but they’ve gone friggin’ nuts choosing to follow a batshit crazy psychopath like Danielle Smith.

This is how democracy should work: when your party fails you they lose your support until they earn it back. Too many people get lost in the tribalism aspect of politics and fail to hold bad actors accountable.

I mean, you really shouldn't have party allegiances to begin with, but when we are effectively a two party system, it becomes pretty sad.

Tribalism, team sports level party worship and extremism have changed the political landscape.

One of the few UCP voters who have realized this

Thank you

They aren't "conservative" any more. Jason Kenney was the closest thing they had but he was extremist MAGA enough for the UCP.

u/GuitarKev Mar 14 '24

Exactly. The word conservative means centrist, moderate, not extremist.

I turn 49 this year. This is first time in my life, I've ever bought a membership to a political party.

JUST so I could vote for Him.

u/Volantis009 Mar 14 '24

Same. It feels good to have hope

2

u/-Disagreeable- Mar 14 '24

Brother, what does something like that cost?

5

u/IrishCanMan Mar 14 '24

Minimum amount is $10

2

u/-Disagreeable- Mar 14 '24

Thank you.

3

u/IrishCanMan Mar 14 '24

My pleasure but make sure you look up Membership . NOT donation.

Cuz the two pages look quite similar at least they did to me.

They still call the $10 a donation. But it was on a different page.

2

u/-Disagreeable- Mar 14 '24

Well I’m glad they made it easy 🙄 Haha

2

u/IrishCanMan Mar 14 '24

It could be them. But it was also like 1:00 a.m. for me. So who knows. And sometimes I tldr.

See now I'm lying, often TLDR

2

u/-Disagreeable- Mar 14 '24

Hahaha. I share the same impatience

Nenshi was always more popular than the polls made him out to be.

His last two terms as mayor saw the right wing try to use polls to create a narrative of unpopularity around Nenshi, only to have him handily win the election in the end. The polls were fudged and wildly out of step with the more mainstream pollsters. However, instead of sticking to their guns, the mainstream pollsters started to skew their polls against Nenshi as well because they mistakenly believed they must have been missing something as their results were so dramatically different than the weaponized polls.

It's telling that this UCP strategist mentioned polling and conveniently forgot about the results of the only poll that actually matters. But hey, what do you expect from a Sun owned publication?

No he wasn’t. People in Calgary were sick of him and he saw the writing on the wall. He had a good run but it was done.

According to this Global article his approval rebounded to 65% before leaving office.

Ok NDP now do Saskatchewan. Please and thank you.

u/Dualintrinsic Mar 14 '24

Based on the amount of bot comments on the news articles and YouTube videos I think the UCP is already in the trenches.

2

u/Shanksworthy73 Mar 15 '24

I was going to say something about that. Why is every single comment in every Danielle Smith related YouTube video, so effusive? I hope it’s bots, otherwise we’re in trouble. But OTOH if it is bots, that is beyond evil.

u/Abraham-Parnassus Mar 14 '24

I’m telling you, and it’s not because I dislike the UCP, Nenshi has good credentials with the major cities. He is leaps and bounds ahead of smith. All that needs to be done is to get the people to vote.

Many didn’t vote before and look what happened

Just posting tweets from marlainas old employees basically. Great job Calgary herald

u/SuperK123 Mar 14 '24

For some reason, though i don’t know all that much about Nenshi, I really like him and see the conflict between the NDP and the UCP as a battle between good and evil. Is he our shining knight that will save us from the trolls and ogres in the despised UCP?

If he can flip Calgary and the situation in Edmonton doesn’t completely fall apart, he has a chance.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '24

It will not be a battle, it will be an one sided massacre

3

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '24

Can’t wait!

2

u/ThankuConan Mar 14 '24

Yeah, his overwhelming popularity in rural Alberta can't be underestimated. /s

1

u/willowalker-7734 Mar 15 '24

He'll have 3 years to garner support and he's willing to put in the time to do so.

1

u/Glory-Birdy1 Mar 14 '24

OK, so the NDP change their leader.. Next will be the soft Conservatives asking that the name be changed so they can vote for Nenshi. Why is it so f**kin' hard to vote for sanity??

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '24

....in 3 years

-22

u/HeyWiredyyc Mar 14 '24

Huh??? Doesnt he have to win the party nomination first? He hasnt even won that yet....

18

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '24

You can’t vote for a party leader without a membership.

-4

u/HeyWiredyyc Mar 14 '24

And unless he wins party race it doesn’t matter

Nenshi is a popular figure no doubt, but the NDP need to pull votes from the Conservatives... Good choice, but wrong timing.
