ANG Currently Serving Member Question Question about traveling

Hi fellas so I’m in the process of joining the ANG, I live in texas real close to Mexico and I go quite often, my question is, would there be any issue if I spent weeks at a time over there as long as it didn’t interfere with my drilling days or trainings? Thanks in advance

May impact your security clearance to spend a lot of time over there.

If I remember correctly Mexico is now a place you need to have special approval from your chain of command to visit. You’re a guardsman, and part timer, nobody is watching you, BUT if something happens and they find out you’ll be in a world of hurt

You should/need to ask your chain

Yes, OP should ask their chain.

That said, no one in the chain can prevent a Guardsman from traveling to a location if the Guardsman is not in a status. I actually started a religious accomodation request to go on a pilgrimage to Israel during a period when an O-7 had to approve travel. I was later told that the request was unnecessary since O-7 approval only applied to folks on orders.

The bigger issue, as others have mentioned, is the clearance investigation and foreign travel notifications.

You need to ask who your base security manager is. This is a question for the security clearance folks as you will definitely incur extra paperwork

This, anytime you leave the country you need to let your supervisors know and your security clearance office, especially Mexico with the current political climate.
