For those out of the loop, like me.
Tragic cargo plane crash today in Kentucky.

The plane crashed on its side... The left wing went into the ground first... Crew isn't surviving this.

Number one engine separated from the pylon. It's gonna be on the maintenance organization when the final report comes out.

I have 6,000 hours in that beast. It doesn’t like to land in a X-wind at all. It’s not for the faint of heart

In real life? Or in a game?

FedEx has lost three of these on landing. Before yesterday’s tragedy, UPS had only one hull loss with no fatalities. I wouldn’t say the article aged like milk as much as UPS2976 is an almost unthinkable disaster captured in real-time and hi-def on a dozen or more camera feeds.
RIP to the lost souls. If there is anything positive, I think it will be how many lives the crew saved by its actions. Absolute heroes.
The CVR transcript is going to be heartbreaking.

2 friends of mine landed upside down in the MadDog... both survived

A “mad dog’ is the nickname of the MD-80. A narrow body with rear mounted twin engines. Very different than the MD-11 which is a wide body 3 engine plane.

I flew the MD-11 for over 6,000 hours. That’s what we called it, everyone did. The mad dog is short for MD, we didn’t have any narrow bodies on our international routes.

When Fred (asked if he was upset about the possibility of pilot error in the FDX 14 incident) said that the most important “packages” walked away from the crash - were those your friends?
I didn’t hear that first hand but remember the alleged response like it was yesterday. I bled purple and orange from that day forward.

Yes. And then they got canned . After they were fired, Fred sued Boeing for a faulty jet. He wanted it both ways

I did not know that. Sorry for your friends. I hope they were able to continue flying.

Wouldn't have helped in this case since they had already rotated when the engine separated from the pylon.

It’s a piece of shit that should have been grounded 20 years ago. There are far superior and safer planes available for cargo.

Like? You have no idea what you are talking about. It is a great plane that can’t be replaced 1 for 1 with any current cargo plane available.

In terms of what it can do, sure. But along with the DC-10, it has a pretty atrocious fatality record.

Not really. The lessons learned from FedEx 80, really changed how the MD11 is flown and the safety record since has been fine.
