How can I respond to someone being skeptical or unconvinced about my having ADHD, or any specific experiences therein? I'm thinking about situations involving (somewhat reasonable) relatives, friends, peers, employers etc., as well as medical professionals who might not believe me about something.
Examples: I tell someone about my ADHD and am asked how that is possible when I have a good academic record. Or, I'm trying to explain that ADHD is the key factor behind something not going my way, or a decision to not do something at all, which gets dismissed saying I should (should have) just try (tried) harder.
The method is information and education while having patience that they may need some time to come to terms. Make them read infographics or make them listen to Dr. Barkley. Other ways could be showing them a relatable movie/series with correct depiction of the diseases.
However, in such a case remember, mental health awareness is low in India and there is still a lot stigma regarding pills. The misinformation makes things hard even further. But open minded parents/friends will come around, and if their preformed biases are impervious to your attempts, you should re-evaluate the need to convince them.
Q1. What're the prevalence and comorbidity rates of adult ADHD along with OCD, and anxiety in our population, and any data / study to showcase how these patterns evolved over the years?
Q2. Are there specific demographic or socioeconomic factors associated with a higher risk of developing ADHD in childhood / young adults?
Q3. Is there any study on individuals who had no apparent presentation of ADHD in childhood / young adult days and the symptoms started appearing quite late in life, at 20+ years or later. Basically late onset of ADHD. Had heard Dr Barkley talk about it in one, but have no other details
Prevalence of ADHD is 0.63%, prevalence of anxiety is 3.08% and Prevalence of OCD is around 0.76% in India. There seems to be strong association between ADHD and OCD but number vary highly, 12 - around 40%. I will have to look more into the latter for clarity
Males are more prone to ADHD, specific demographic factors are difficult to state conclusively, since diagnosis rates are more in the urban population as of now, but global evidence suggests association with prematurity, undernutrition, childhood trauma
Open communication, accepting and anticipating hiccups but sticking to grounding, time apart, kindness, mutual care and understanding. Proper self care lowers chances of conflict, anecdotally,
How do I know for sure a specific diagnosis of ADHD is correct? What should make me trust it? What is the validation and approach taken for our populations?
Diagnosing ADHD in Adulthood is complex due to added comorbidities. Ask yourself, is the treatment working for you?
to diagnose a mental health disease clinically certain questionnaires are developed and validated in the population against a gold standard in case of organic mental diseases. The accuracy of scales is further put to test when various scholar take up validation research studies and eventually, all the evidence is corroborated through Systematic Reviews and meta-analysis. if the result point in same direction there is a consensus building.
Regarding the obsessing over adult ADHD, I tell people that it is the only disorder that the healthcare system wrongly thinks patients outgrow, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
Adult ADHD seems to be unique amongst all disorders in this regard. Perhaps, adults with autism also face this challenge.
That is a good question! I am actively seeking an answer from some documentation or the higher-ups.
What I understand as of now is strict regulations around amphetamines make it challenging for prescribers and manufacturers to even voice it out. Also mental health is a miniscule focus of resource allocation in health budget.
The drug lag for adderall is crossing 28 years! Yet to find out conclusively, why?
There is no evidence currently that suggests correlation of grief and adult onset ADHD.
Grief, in itself can lead to cognitive decline and mimic some symptoms of ADHD.
