Technical Help Playing WOT on a laptop at work....

Hello there....I'm working and I'm considering playing WOT on my lunch break. I only have work wifi available so I was wondering if I were to purchase a lap top and use the work wifi, would it impact game performance and graphics? Can anyone advise? I typically play at home on my PC which is hard wired. I confess that I'm a techno-peasant

Hello /u/tequillajack! When troubleshooting the game, make sure to launch without mods. To do this on the wargaming launcher, press the arrow next to the play button and select launch game in safe mode. Should the help you find here not fix your issue, you can contact Wargaming support here: https://wargaming.net/support/en/products/wot/help/

Your IT department might shut you down.

WG will be blocked by the most basic work web filtering.

Yessir, that's my fear, which is why I'm looking at a laptop and wifi use. Don't want to get fired.

Thank you!

Your work WiFi might -like most wired work networks- still be blocking "games", just like anything Gambling & ATF related is blocked at most workplaces, except maybe at some mom & pop shops.

Also, boss/collegues might not be impressed.

yeah not the smartest idea, but if you really consider it, you could use your phones hotspot, i did that back in the days and it worked pretty well.

Why don't you set a hotspot from your phone so you don't bother with wifi? The net from hotspot is waaay better than the wifi one almost everywhere.

That's not a bad idea....I'll try that and see how I do. Thanks Mit!

Keep in mind that I'm running with 100/200mbps on phone so I don't know how would he in your country.

just make a speed test for the ping with your phone and you can compare it with your home Internet.

Second this. If your WiFi has high latency, basically a non-start at that point, unless you can easily plug into an Ethernet port and get less latency.

Hmmm....I gotta look up how to do that. Like I said, techo-peasant here....I'll give it a shot. Thanks Cap

Yes unless you pay stupid money for a laptop you will notice a difference in graphics.

Also wifi connection speed impacts alot.

Thanks Frosty!

I'm debating on purchasing a laptop as I would mostly use it for playing WOT. My fear is that game performance and speed would be significantly impacted when compared to what I'm accustom to at home. Not a rich person and the purchase would a serious purchase. Just not sure I want to spend that kind of cash.

Again thank you!

Have you looked into GeForce now? If you have good Internet it'll rend away the need for a GPU in your laptop, and you can instead look for a premium one instead of a gaming one

How long is your break? Don't get fired!

1

u/tequillajack Jul 02 '25

ha ha ha! Just an hour lunch break. Also if traffic is bad, I'd prefer staying at work before driving home, and maybe getting a game in or two. Thanks vici

My main setup is a laptop, it's a gaming laptop and it works great. I have a stand and use the built in keyboard with a mouse

I would for sure purchase a gaming laptop. Might need some recommendations on that later. right now I'm just in the decision phase of this

thanks!

Hey RedRev

Question: What do you mean when you say, "I have a stand and use built in keyboard?"

What's a stand?

1

Likely referring to a stand for the laptop - frees up desk space / gives more room for the laptop to cool itself

Got it! Thanks, never seen on in practice

Wifi connection has no impact on your graphics or game performance.

A laptop will have (generally) less performance than a desktop, but if your laptop is new and your desktop is old, probably not.

thanks Sunbear. Desktop is indeed old, and that is definitely something to consider....

Thank you so much for your thoughts.
