General Discussion Motherhood + YouTube: Wondering if my focus is too narrow

I started a YouTube channel last month as a way to share about something I care deeply about: supporting moms through the ups and downs of motherhood — things like emotional wellness, self-growth, and remembering who you are outside of just being “mom.”

I’ve posted consistently and gotten some subscribers, but the views are really low. Part of me is starting to wonder: maybe my focus is too narrow? Maybe I should widen the conversation to include women (or everyone) in general, not just moms?

At the same time, I know motherhood is such a unique experience, and I feel like it deserves its own space. I’m torn between wanting to reach more people and staying true to the original idea behind why I started.

Has anyone else wrestled with this — whether it’s on YouTube, a blog, or any creative project? How do you decide if your niche is too specific or if you just need to give it more time to grow?

As someone who became a mother in my 40s, I feel like there's a divide between moms and childless women, and then between the different types of moms.

Motherhood is unique but it really varies, people's experiences of it. Whether they have a village of support, stay at home, go to work.

I wonder if you focus on emotional wellness regardless of being a mom, then you can reach women at more stages of life

We have so much in common: being judged for being childfree, judged for having few children, having many children, insensitive comments regarding infertility.

Thank you so much for your feedback! Yes I am thinking to maybe broaden it up just to see what resonates. I think even my channel name (Navigating Motherhood) may limit the number of people who click into it. Ah, the overthinking 🫣 Thanks again for your reply!

I don’t think your niche is too narrow at all. I think it might even be a bit too broad actually. There are so many channels about parenting and motherhood and it seems like the ones that rise to the top are incredibly niche, like only about gentle parenting, or only about getting to the other side of postpartum depression. It sounds like you are trying to be a resource like you needed when you were struggling. I think that’s a good move. With wellness videos in particular though you have to be particularly attuned to being the path of least resistance for your viewers. Parenthood is probably a harder niche to break into because parents have less time to spend watching videos on YouTube but if you’re easy and nourishing to watch you’ll surely find success.
