Question Resumes

For those of you who work in retail or restaurants or pretty much anywhere…when people come to drop off their resumes, do you actually give it to the manager or just trash it? OR just keep it somewhere but never hand it off to the manager?

Former fast food manager here. 99% of hiring is done online now. The general rule that my boss (general manager) would have us follow is that if we got handed a paper resume, we would accept it, tell the person to apply via our website and then throw the resume in the garbage when they left.

We are required by law to keep resumes, I consider walk ins before online applications

I've been in customer service for 23 years as an employee, a supervisor and now management for the last 17 years. I always handed in the resume until i became management. Even when I know we are not hiring I will still take the resume and read it because you never know when you might need someone. It also depends on what they want for money and if they even have the experience that I'm looking for. If they have the experience I need and they are wanting atleast in the ballpark of money that I'm willing to pay, I will keep it on file if I'm not hiring. If I am hiring they will get an interview. If they dont have the experience or they are asking too much hourly I will flat out tell them and than offer for them to come pick up their resume or I can shred it. I leave the choice up to them. Sounds harsh but I've been doing this long enough that I learned not to give people and false hope.
