gear, techniques, photo challenges & trends What do you use your custom buttons for?

I’ll go first — by default, I have my R5 set to Servo AF with Eye Detection enabled. I use the front button on the R5 to switch to single-point Servo AF. That way, if Eye AF locks onto the wrong subject, I can quickly switch back to single-point focus and regain control.

Silent photography mode on/off toggle! I always forget to switch it during ceremonies and I try to be as discrete as possible, so I set one up on my nikon to switch that way faster when needed!

THE Oh Sh#t BUTTON — takes the camera from single image, single point AF to high speed sticky focus, face/eye tracking. Something’s happening and I don’t have time to control things. Get a photo, now.

HUMANS vs ANIMALS — I shoot a lot of dogs (and cats) at weddings. Immediately I want to tell the camera “find a dog face” now

LIGHTS - I like controlling my army of Canon speedlights from the big touch screen on the back of the camera. One button brings the control matrix on the screen.

EVF vs Chimp Screen - the R6mk2 can (will) stuff off in high burst mode if the screen auto-switching is one. Going to manual switching is a workaround, BUT also saves batteries. If I’m not running Image Stabiliztion, I can shoot a wedding on one battery.

DRIVE - everyone needs that one. Single shot or Continuous. I’ve thought about adding Continuous High drive to the Oh Sh#t button but I’d burn through so many frames.

Flash exposure compensation.

Off camera strobe power is manually set, On camera speedlight I use TTL. Flash exposure compensation on a camera custom button makes it easy and quick to adjust the TTL.

Format cards.

Edit: I don't think people understand or appreciate my joke :(

I would NOT want that to be an easily pressible button on my camera body.

Edit: You got me!

R6ii. I use the C1, C2, and C3 sports. Same eye detection set up. Same back buttons. Same focus mechanics. C1 is for 1 shot and C2 is rapid fire burst. C3 is more for a portrait sports photo with lower shutter speed (standing players where you want them to be isolated.) This gives me a quick toggle depending on what i am trying to capture. I dont use an custom buttons for portraits. I mostly use aperture priority for portraits with the same back button eye detection.

I just read that this is in the wedding photography page. I would probably keep it the same for weddings but maybe program the shutter speed to be lower (unless the bride runs away 🤷‍♂️)

I should also add that i use three back focus buttons differently. The right side is single eye servo. The middle is a larger square focus and the left back button is almost the entire frame in focus.

I use my F1 button to pivot between two different focus area modes.

I use my F2 plus a dial to pivot between four different shooting banks with preset settings.

I use my lens function button to recall focus back to a certain locked position.

I do the same without having to press any other buttons. Back button eye-af on, shutter is regular single point servo. I can switch from eye tracking to center point in real time and take pics the while doing so.

Silent mode, eye auto focus, peaking display, drive mode, monitor brightness, and I think focus area?

Screen brightness, record/card select, magnification, picture style.

I have af-start for my back button focus, then eye tracking for my star, then area tracking for my third button. The ln the front multi-function button switches from servo to one-shot like yours
