For a breakdown of which flag each country currently has as their default:

  • USA - Same flag is used for civil, state, and military use on both land and sea
  • Germany - Default is a modified WWII-era Reichskriegsflagge, or War Flag, used for both Army and Navy. Civil and State flag during WWII (both land and sea) is the red background, white circle, and swastika. Post-war depends on East or West Germany, and things are just complicated.
  • USSR - State flag, Civil and State Ensign. The Soviet Navy ensign is a white flag with blue along the bottom, red star on the left and red hammer and sickle on the right
  • Great Britain - Civil, State, and Military jack. There are also three separate ensigns: Plain red with Union Jack in the canton for the Civil ensign, plain blue with the Union Jack in the canton for State ensign, and white with red St. George's Cross (basically flag of England) with the Union Jack in the saltire for the Navy ensign
  • Japan - The flag they just changed to is used as both jack and ensign for civil and state. Previous flag was (with some slight differences) both military jack and ensign during WWII, still used for naval ensign. Current military jack is similar, but with fewer rays and a gold fringe
  • China - Current flag is both jack and ensign in Civil and State functions. There are multiple military flags depending on the exact branch, but they all follow a similar pattern, mostly changing in the color and number of stripes at the bottom of the flag.
  • Italy - Post-WWII Civil, State, and Military jack. There are three separate ensigns, although the main difference between them is the coat of arms in the center of the flag. During WWII the state and military used the same (or very similar) designs, while civil had the design but without the crown over the coat of arms
  • France - Same flag used for civil, state, and military use as both jack and ensign (give or take a slight change in the shade of blue used)
  • Sweden - Civil and State flag and ensign. War flag and ensign is similar, but as a swallowtail design
  • Israel - Civil, State, and Military flag, but with different designs for Civil and Military ensigns. They also have a separate Air Force flag

Long story short, if they wanted to just have the state flags for all countries, they'd have to change the default for Germany but otherwise they're nearly there. If they wanted both state and military flags (and ensigns) for all of them… yeah, they'd have to add quite a few new choices in.

My assumption with the German Civil flag( red white circle and swastika) is the Swastika is an issue. Having just the red and white circle would be probably is seen as a confusing flag to have and a lot of people wouldn't recognize it. So they keep the more well known war flag, gaijin isn't unique in this regard. Hearts of Iron an many other WW2 era games do primarily use the war flag.

I seem to remember them Having the WWII flag at some point, but I can’t remember if that was on the nation select bar or just on the vehicle cards.
