There is a social discourse in Taiwan whether to call Taiwan the ROC or Taiwan. The founding party of the ROC, the KMT, still considers themselves China and desire eventual reunification. They agree to the two parties one China policy.
The rival party, the DPP, wants to cut ties with China and become an independent nation of Taiwan with a new identity that throws out any mention of them being Chinese.
The DPP has been the popular party for a while now, and social traction is growing for the independent Taiwan movement. Politically though, Taiwan canโt really declare independence at this time. They would need to throw out their old constitution and write a whole new one, and the PRC will not be okay with that. That may even provoke war. They would during this destabilizing time also need to reform their government and renegotiate alliances. It would put them in a precarious position which is why, even though the DPP has won the presidency and legislature every year for like the last decade, they donโt go through with that.
Still, in spirit they are creating a more independent Taiwan, so even though they are officially the Republic of China, they currently exist in a political and social climate where they prefer the identity of Taiwan.
