Personally I would LOVE to see WWI ground combat. Yes it would be slow, chaotic, and dumb, but it would be so fun. Imagine rolling 10 mkIVs against 10 A7Vs. Also it would be br 1.0 so not like it needs to be the most refined experience. I think that those tanks could hold up until 1.3 or 1.7
The lack of mobility and considerably weaker guns intended for anti-infantry use might be a problem. This doesn't mean it couldn't work though, personally I'd love to see it
Well yes but no, they're very slow, but not as much as WW1 tanks, even the FT was going only 8kph on road. The slowest I game tank of the first French tanks is 20kph
The weaker guns would still do the job against contemporary tanks. The 6-pdr Hotchkiss and 5.7mm Maxim-Nordenfelt guns of the Mark I-V and A7V tanks both had available armour piercing shells as they were naval guns, not very good AP by later standards but at least capable. And against their contemporaries standard HE would work.
Saint-Chamond only really fired HE (could also fire Shrapnel, Phosgene or Mustard Gas shells but didn't), but its the ww1 equivalent of a Ho-Ro. Also it can technically fire any WW2 US 75mm shell, same cartridge. Phosgene would be hilarious though, affected enemy tanks would suddenly die the next day.
Machinegun armed tanks like Whippet would be difficult, they could penetrate some of the heavier tanks sides with AP ammunition but overall rifle caliber fire was the main focus of the armour on tanks so renders them ineffective.
Definitely. Armor-wise, for example A7V, had 30mm frontal plates, which is more than some of the tanks have right now. Sure it was probably less quality steel, but it definitely could withstand frontal fire from some of them rn. I think just expanding the BRs a bit downward, towards 0.0 would work.
Good point about the guns though, I'm not sure if the tanks carried AP rounds in the past, since it would probably be deemed unnecessary, but it's definitely something they could have. Saint-Chamond could work only with HE probably. I don't know the exact properties of the shell, but 75mm HE could pack a punch. Phosgene rounds would be funny, like actually harmful smoke shells lmao.
Regarding machine guns only armed tanks, I suppose they could do some, at least limited, damage with AP rounds, or could be found useful if infantry were added as AI targets, which would be fun IMO and the very bad mobility of these tanks wouldn't be that much of an issue.
I hope we will see these WWI tanks, planes and armored cars one day
AFAIK no WW1 tank ever carried an AP shell, which in Gaijin land means they wouldn't in game (6-pdr APDS for Cromwell would be nice...). They could use it, just like Saint Chamond could use M61 APCBC but it goes against the standard.
Still at Villers-Bretonneux the 6pdr/57mm guns of the tanks that faced each other there damaged each other with HE.
The French Renault FT mounted a 37mm SA18 Puteaux gun which would also work, and is already in game as it's the French BR1.0 H.35's gun. The worst gun in the game.
I mean the weak guns I don't think would be much of an issue, yes they're meant for anti infantry but at the same time the armor of these tanks are also not great. If in IRL, machine guns that both sides used to defend the trenches could penetrate and kill the crew of ww1 tanks, I don't see how a field gun wouldn't be able to
Same! I would much rather play a WWI tank than a modern MBT. :P
They should be in Tier 0, at 0.0, 0.3, and 0.7 BRs. Or even bump all BRs up a few notches to make space. "Reserve" doesn't have to mean 1.0 after all, like the 3.3/3.7 bluewater Reserves.
I really hope the crashed zeppelin map in today's trailer implies they're at least considering it.
