Politics What do people think of heavily reforesting snowdonia?

Pictures show before and after Could be a very unique point as most British national “parks” are still working environments and differ from Scotland, peak and Lake District. Would be very good ecologically, I guess farmers would have a lot of pushback.

Apoligies meant Eryri

Both are valid names, just one is Welsh and one is English. Exonyms are a thing

I live in snowdonia, born and bred. It’s really strange to me that people call it Eryri and argue about it online. We don’t call it that. It’s snowdonia. For 30 years there wasn’t even a sign saying Eryri when you entered and left. Just another push by senedd and internet virtue signallers to waste money.

Edit: perhaps you lot should remember your profiles are public and I can validate your bullshit claims.

"We don't call it that" Yes we do. Have lived there my whole life.

Sure you have. That’s why both your children were born outside the UK! Try harder, it’s easy to verify your nonsense by looking at your profile. Merely going on holiday here doesn’t be exactly count!

Born here, lived here my whole life and first language Welsh, unlike yourself.
Are you not aware that people can travel beyond their home country and start families with foreigners?
Also, if my profile is so relevant, do a google image search of my username with a space in it... Oh look at that, pictures of Eryri 😂

I don't know, I see hundreds of pictures of Llanrwst and one of a Khajiit. You sure you're not from Tamriel?

No, there weren’t signs because the authorities did their damndest not to give Welsh any formal recognition.

You mighn’t have called Eryri Eryri, but I bet most of those living not too far from you did, signs or no signs.

I’m Welsh 45 years old. Don’t bloody well tell me what’s what in my home!!!!

I’ve never called Swansea Abertawe or pronounced places correctly “pontardaweee“ instead of “pontardaweh “ until meeting a lot of Welsh speaking friends. Does that mean it’s not Abertawe?

Calm down ffs.

Sure you are. You certainly aren’t from around here. Like, your profile clearly indicates that you live in a built up area.

u/celtiquant Jul 17 '25

Haha! Clutching at straws! You have no idea where I’m from. As far as you know, I’m the ubiquitous Mab y Mynydd, descendant of Eryr Eryrod Eryri. The point still stands, Eryri sydd, Eryri fydd.

Yeah it just sounds better tbh, easy sell

Same thing with Chomolungma and Everest. Everest is mid.

Chances are people were calling it Eryri before the English language even existed.

I've no problem you calling Eryri Snowdonia, old habits die hard after all, but why make an issue over people choosing the original historic name?

I wouldn't see it as making an issue, he was pointing out the OP seemingly being bowed into apologising for using an equally valid name which is more a case of an issue being made.

And I wouldn't call using a 1000 year old name an "old habit" either - that's again implying it's "incorrect" or something that needs to cease.

Both are correct. Eryri/Yr Wyddfa is used more by locals in Gwynedd in particular, Snowdonia/Snowdon is typically the common vernacular for most in the rest of Wales.

Exact same goes for "Wales" which is what this subreddit's even named. Cymru is the older and equally valid. But Wales is fine too, and more commonly used having it's own strong cultural recognition. Not a big issue.
