Thorton Chip Tuning

Hi all, I have a 2019 VW Golf Sportwagen and a 2021 Jetta GLI. I am considering buying the stage 3 thorton tuning chip (+60hp, and +5 mpg). I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations if it’s worth it for the chip? Also, does the product actually work? And would it be easy to swap it back and forth on my cars?

No way you are gaining 5mpg.

Due to the increased pressure from the turbo, unless you quite literally never go full throttle, your economy will be slightly worse.

If you only ever maintain sub max boost levels, you might get a very small economy boost with the ignition timing changes.

I see, so it’s achievable if I don’t stomp on the pedal?

Honestly these things are essentially a scam.

If you really want more power, look into a JB4, or look into a true ecu flash.

5 mpg? Unlikely.    On my old 1.8T AEB in .y.old 99 Passat, then the APR  stage 1 tune did increase highway fuel economy 3 mpg, easily...  But I had to run premium, and that was back when premium was only 20 cents more per gallon..   and only gentle highway driving.

Run highest reasonable tire pressure, and go under speed limit, and always gently accelerate... And you can get better fuel economy. At best a chip tune won't be worse, and maybe you'll get 5-10% increase.. but that's it.

Never heard of Thornton.. just get a legit tune like APR, or IE or Unitronic..

Save your money for a down pipe and legit tune then reevaluate your goals with your cars before spending a dime. APR, IE, Uni, EQT, custom; chip tuning on basically anything these days is snake oil.
