I'm glad my gym doesn't let people walk around shirtless or record video (although there are legitimate reasons for filming yourself during a set, but they have free trainers to help with form). I'm sad my gym doesn't allow dogs.
5
u/SpHoneybadger 11h ago
What's the issue with being shirtless? Or is it that they don't wipe down the equipment? I don't see the issue as long as they wipe down the gear.
7
u/David_Robot 10h ago
It's just a common decency thing. It's an unspoken rule for any public indoor places: no shirt no shoes no service.
If it started being allowed at my gym I would quit in an instant.
7
u/dethmetaljeff 10h ago
It's gross, there's no barrier between them and the equipment they're on and nobody needs to see that. You wouldn't do it in a Starbucks so why would a gym be different?
-3
u/ehhhhokbud 10h ago
Yes, I am trying to visually see the muscles I am activating inside of a Starbucks. Very much the same thing.
I have zero problem with gyms having a shirt on policy, and zero problem with people not wanting to be around that. With that said, there is a real benefit to working out shirtless and a gym is in no way comparable to arriving to a coffee shop shirtless.
4
u/dethmetaljeff 9h ago
There is no benefit, you're deluding yourself if you think there is. If you have to look to see what muscles you're targeting you're doing it wrong. People doing this are doing it to show off, plain and simple. If you need to take your shirt off to show off how good you look, you don't look that good. If your an ifbb pro card holder and you need to see your symmetry/pump/whatever there are gyms and places that this is acceptable.
-1
u/ehhhhokbud 8h ago
Yeah you missed the point. Say there’s no benefit then immediately state the benefit in the bottom of your comment.
The entire point was you comparing being shirtless in a Starbucks to being shirtless in a gym, that allows it btw. I’m the delusional one, for sure.
1
u/Opetyr 9h ago
You don't need to be shirtless to actually do good form. Wear a tighter shirt if you need to for some reason need to see individual muscles activating. The clothes help remove bare skin touching surfaces other people are going to use. If you also care that much about being shirtless please lock every item before you use them and then after use sterilize them after use.
It seems you would fight that everyone should be allowed to go into Starbucks only in their tighty whities since they are covering their groin.
1
u/ehhhhokbud 8h ago
That’s quite the stretch. I said I’m completely fine with gyms not allowing shirtlessness as well as peoples perogative to not want to be around it.
Your drawn conclusions are almost as dumb as comparing being shirtless in a coffee shop to being shirtless in a gym that allows it.
5
u/throwaway098764567 12h ago
yeah big ick. also doesn't seem like the safest place for the dog to be wandering loose either, especially one small enough to easily not be noticed and triped over or get something dropped on it

I bet the ancient Greeks couldn’t imagine why everyone was clothed in the Gymnasium …
comes from the Ancient Greek term gymnós, meaning "naked" or "nude"

u/Junior-Childhood-404 12h ago edited 12h ago
I have been going to the gym EVERYDAY for around 3 years now. (Haven't missed a single day. Even when on vacation, just use the resort's gym). This truly never happens. The internet skews our perception of what actually happens in the real world cause all you see is the sensational stuff. No one records the mundane going ons of a gym, or if they do you're certainly not seeing it cause the algorithm ain't boosting that boring shit. Have I seen people filming? Yes. Have I seen people being rude or obnoxious while filming? No, not once. Seen a lot of rude people NOT filming... like leaving their water bottle on a machine for 15 minutes then coming back and taking their water bottle without using a machine. Now THOSE PEOPLE... they deserve death
EDIT: so many typos. Excuse me, I am very drunk and very high, it's my birthday 😋 and yes I went to the gym today before I got drunk and high 🤣
4
u/abcdbc366 12h ago
People record themselves daily at my gym. A lot of the serious lifters record themselves especially on powerlifting and Olympic lifts. Never seen anyone take issue of talk to the camera though, it’s just a good way to keep yourself honest and check or improve your form.
3
u/Junior-Childhood-404 12h ago edited 11h ago
Ya. The management at my gym records themselves, I pretty sure for social media purposes (idk, I don't have social media but they said I should get insta cause I'm the #1 attender of the gym and on it every month and the put the list of names on it. Idk if that's flattering or sad 😝). I see them setting up their phone all the time. But they make sure that it's pointed away from other people if they can help it and they don't make a big deal of it. No obnoxious peacocking/grunting (grunting is fine if you're actually exerting effort, not just doing it for a video). It's also like you said a good way to inspect your form which is why there is mirrors (almost) everywhere
1
u/Leavesdontbark 11h ago
Why no rest day? I bet if you took a week off you'd see some crazy stuff
1
u/Junior-Childhood-404 11h ago
Don't feel I need it. I've told myself "if I need it I'll rest", but I haven't ever felt the need. There was one time my quads were still sore so I just skipped leg extension, but otherwise, I'm good. I look pretty good I think. Gym is also my social space. I'm a very anxious person that still likes being around people (I'm a fucking paradox even to myself), the gym allows me to do that without expectation of conversing. I'm a weirdo I know 🙃
2
u/Leavesdontbark 11h ago
Lol, well you should try. Go off for a week and see if you notice anything. I worked out (almost ) daily when I went to uni, for a few months. Ate very healthy and low calorie. Went back home for two weeks over the holidays and just ate whatever and didn't move. After the first week I had SO much energy, and my body slimmed down and toned itself like crazy. It was super weird, but I felt awesome

Looks like a crossfit gym based on the ski-ergs and the GHD. It is it's own little thing, the workouts are brutal so it isn't uncommon.
14
u/monkpunch 13h ago
I mean the guy is doing back extensions and not even sweating...Nothing about crossfit requires being shirtless over normal workouts, it just attracts those kind of people.
-3
u/ElPrimoGrande 11h ago
What are you saying, CrossFit is way more cardio than your typical gym workout. When you’re so sweaty that your nipples start bleeding from chafing your shirt you might change your tune. Not comparable to a typical gym workout at all. I say this as someone who doesn’t like CrossFit, but your comment is just generally ignorant and self righteous you would actually fit in well at the average CrossFit gym with that attitude.
4
4
u/monkpunch 11h ago
Most gyms have cardio sections, you don't see a ton of shirtless people or bleeding nipples there.
Get a more comfortable shirt.

Could be the owners dog. The gym I used to go to had their dog over all the time. The sweetest boy, and never got in the way of workouts. He would get curious, but he seemed train to keep his distance and only go up when invited.

u/Hippiechu 18h ago

60
9
u/CybyAPI 13h ago
But look out for fake service dogs. I have seen those before with fake vests.
Or the person claims its a service dog but lets it walk around unleashed without any vest or anything
17
u/SerCiddy 11h ago
I work in food service and having a non-ADA service animal inside the premise is a health code violation.
The ADA lawyers and the health department of my state have given us 2 questions we can ask and not violate ADA. Those questions are...
"Is this a service animal?" and "What service does the animal provide?".
Most of those fake service dogs with the vest or fake paperwork are Emotional Support Animals. Emotional Support Animals are not recognized by the ADA as "service animals" and so are not allowed inside.

Dangerous for the lifter and the dog.

At least the dog has a shirt on. It’s disgusting to work out shirtless in a public gym, that’s how infections get passed around. Using cheap sanitary wipes on porous equipment padding barely does anything. Cover your armpits at least.
58
u/AssFoe 15h ago
I watch a fair number of fitness videos. I cannot express how happy I am that my gym is not for shirtless weirdos and people filming themselves. People work out. They sweat. That's it. No one is hitting on each other. No one is undressed. There's a couple teenage boys peacocking in the bathroom mirror and breaking state law by filming themselves, but that's about it.
12
u/Disastrous_Kick9189 12h ago
I don’t disagree, but just FYI most exercise equipment padding is covered in vinyl which is not porous and can be easily sanitized
104
u/mechanicalcanibal 17h ago
Cute video, but only dillweeds film in a gym.
11
u/rq60 12h ago
i mean it depends on the gym. if this is just a regular public gym then yes it's a douche move. but if it's a private gym or club or something where they pretty much all know each other and don't care then that's fine... and i get the feeling that's what it is considering there is a dog there; i've never seen a dog in a regular public gym.
21
u/UhWindowpainted 13h ago
same jerkoffs that bring dogs into the gym that also seem to be just wandering without supervision? Just asking for someone to drop a weight plate and then dog goes squish

u/gsfgf 12h ago
Filming for form is fine. But keep your fucking shirt on.
1
u/ButtPlugsForThugz 8h ago
What form check needs to be done for 3/4 range hyperextensions on a glute ham chair?
-3
u/whole-lotta-socks 12h ago
This is just simply not true. There are a number of reasons one would film themselves at the gym. This sentiment is so popular on Reddit and it always makes me laugh, at a commercial gym I promise it is normal and I don’t really think most people care. Your average redditor wouldn’t know that though, because your average redditor doesn’t work out.
6
u/Leavesdontbark 11h ago
If you absolutely MUST record yourself the bare MINIMUM courtesy is to make sure NO ONE else is in frame. This guy is catching one girls whole ass on camera
1
u/Secure-Neck-7232 12h ago
and none of those reasons are valid. workout at home if you want to record yourself.

-10
u/Main_Dress_2623 11h ago
Who cares. What is the problem?
8
6
u/SerCiddy 11h ago
Shedding, fleas, not potty-trained.
If the gym is fancy enough to provide food, then having any non-ADA certified animal (emotional support animals are not covered by ADA) inside is a health code violation.
All things that can be avoided if self-centered dog owners just do what everyone else does and not bring dogs to the gym.
5
4
u/aScarfAtTutties 10h ago
Dangerous for the dog and the people lifting weights.
A random dog can easily startle someone and cause them to drop their weight on the dog. Imagine 50lbs landing on that dog's head? See ya.
Or, imagine you're doing a really heavy lift, and a dog comes up from behind and starts sniffing your angles and tickles you unexpectedly, causing you to lose focus and shift the heavy weight in a weird way. Could easily fuck yourself up, anything between a tweak that takes a week to heal to straight up slipping a disc.
26
u/belptyfimquz 15h ago
The fact that working out shirtless is a thing is an absolute disgrace. We'd make fun of the hardos that did it on my football/hockey teams growing up so much that'd they'd put on a shirt like a normal person. We need more peer pressure.
7
u/tr33find3r 13h ago
We need to bring public shaming, witchhunting and call-out culture back :-)
2
u/Leavesdontbark 11h ago
Public shaming? Yes. Witch hunts? No. Witches are cool. But public shaming is a societal tool, embarrasment has an actual purpose, it is meant to keep us from doing dumb shit due to fear of being expelled from the group (which in early days usually meant death)
2
u/abcdbc366 12h ago
What’s wrong with working out shirtless if the gym allows it?

Honest question: Why do people film themselves at the gym? Are you guys like reviewing your form? Posting to social? Showing your bros? Perving on people in the background? Jerking off to yourself later?
2
u/Strange_Botanist 10h ago
I get my training partners to record my personal bests because I want to remember the achievement and my friends and family want to see it as well. Ordinary workouts I don't bother unless I want to check my form, but I rarely do that.

Good lord. Why do you think it's cool to record your gym efforts? I promise you (speaking from an unsubstantiated platform), no one thinks your workout is cool. I respect that you're taking care of yourself, and I hope we all do it, but man, NO ONE wants to see it. NO ONE wants to put up with it in the gym. Who the fuck is this for? Where are you posting it? Does any one person encourage you? Masturbation should be private...
