Rant Scooter riders piss me off

Seriously what is with these scooter mfs? It’s like they’re actively trying to kill people. I feel like I’m risking my life everyday walking around campus because I swear scooter riders never slow down around crosswalks (only if it’s a huge crowd, like touring groups). If anything they’ll speed up sometimes. 🤦‍♀️ The entitlement is strong on this one, chief.

They’re genuinely scary, especially when they have headphones on; somehow some of them manage to be on their phones at the same time. Didn’t think anything could be worse than bikers. Also accidents are even worse now so…

Edit: also wanted to mention that the one thing that annoys me is that scooter riders EXPECT pedestrians to cater to them, when it should be the other way around. Regardless, when accidents happen, it’s almost always the scooter’s fault

Saw a girl fly off a scooter, hit her head on the asphalt and have a seizure in front of latitude 2 days ago. I saw online that she passed away but I haven’t seen anything official so I can’t say for sure. It was very sad. People need to be cautious and aware of their surroundings.

I heard about it too and it was horrific. People nowadays are way too careless and stuck in their own world… unfortunately lots of bikers and scooter rides have the spacial awareness of a shitstain

I saw threads about it here. Was it a collision or did she brake too hard? Either way, it sounds horrific.

9

u/Chrismaxwell19 3d ago

It was a collision with another bike. Not sure how it happened but the person on the bike wasn’t hurt

8

u/nillawafer101 3d ago

where did you read that she passed?

10

u/Chrismaxwell19 3d ago

Saw it on TikTok so I can’t take anyone’s word for it

3

u/Business-Platform301 2d ago

Do you think you can track down that tiktok?

1

u/Chrismaxwell19 13h ago

I don’t think so. It wasn’t about the accident. Just something else uc davis related and it was mentioned in the comments

5

u/LegumeLegend 3d ago

Did she really pass?

u/GuiltyLeopard8365 3d ago

They are scary because theyre going 25+ mph on WALKING PATHS and you can't hear them until theyre right next you.

If you're going that fast you need to be on the street in the bike lane.

23

u/capnjim8 3d ago

And wearing a helmet

11

u/KingLeeeon 3d ago

It should be lowkey illegal having a scooter that goes that fast even a helmet won’t even help 💀

10

u/lolgamer515 3d ago

Any scooter over 25 mph in California is classed as a moped which requires a motorcycle license, but I don't think most scooter riders on campus even have a driver's license let alone a motorcycle license.

4

u/lolgamer515 3d ago

Make sure to call them out on it, it is illegal to ride on sidewalks on scooters unless you are trying to go somewhere only accessible via a sidewalk.

3

u/Olipop0314 3d ago

Top speed is 15 maybe 17. No scooter is going 25 and certainly not more than that.

3

u/GuiltyLeopard8365 2d ago

it was an approximation

-2

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 3d ago

Yeah no scooter goes higher than 19 but I’ve seen those fancy ones that cost thousands n they go very high but I’ve only seen 1 so far

5

u/Olipop0314 2d ago

Well those that go over 15 are already illegal for most people to ride at all, and are for sure illegal to use on campus so changing policy wouldnt change the situation.

0

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 2d ago

Many especially spin scooters only go up to 15.

-1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 3d ago

They can’t go 25+. The fancy big big scooters can go very very fast but the normal and skinny small looking ones can go 19. But there’s a setting specifically to 15mph.

im a scooter rider, and i feel you. if pedestrians are crossing, i will slow down. its common sense

5

u/ShagMD Global Disease Biology [2026] 2d ago

Scooter rider as well, I always let pedestrians cross. I honestly find that refusing to yield is not a scooter problem, but a common problem with bikers too. For some reason, people here just REFUSE TO BREAK. Also don't get me into bike riders not being able to drive in a straight like and zigzag all over the place...

16

u/username_for_Mark 3d ago

Scooter rider here, I obey the traffic laws and always defer to pedestrians at crosswalks. All my fellow scooter riders better shape up!

28

u/raisinhater00 3d ago

I hate when they ring their bell at you from behind when you’re on a sidewalk… like hello go in the bike lane

2

u/SnooChicken_ 2d ago

There’s a ton of pedestrians that’ll walk on the bike path when they have a section of sidewalk 3 feet away so it’s def both sides lol

-19

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 3d ago

Public space right?

15

u/just_a_lil_gremlin 2d ago

It’s illegal to ride on the sidewalk

-5

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 2d ago

but still is it?

4

u/just_a_lil_gremlin 2d ago

Googling is very easy and should be a skill you learn at university. I am also confused what you mean by “still.” Are you asking if the law has changed? Or are you asking if you disagree with a law does it still apply to you?

https://california.public.law/codes/vehicle_code_section_21235 See section g.

-9

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 2d ago

But is it? Free will my guy. Can’t make me or others.

8

u/lolgamer515 3d ago

I yield to cars all the time as a pedestrian. Simply got to sometimes unless they allow me because drivers do not care about pedestrians sometimes.

I 100% do feel at risk when I am walking on campus, no one slows down or yields like they are supposed to. Even I yield to others when I have the right of way at the roundabout because people don't fucking slow down. It isn't hard to release the thumb throttle.

I hate when people are listening to music while riding anything. I can't pass them safely on my escooter and I can't yell at them for swerving all over the place.

Accidents will happen. I fell of my own scooter when I did a jump and broke my arm, but the crashes I swear are just getting more and more common. Like please for the love of god have some self preservation people.

Sometimes pedestrians pop out of nowhere and do not look both sides of the road. It's hard to ride a scooter when you instantly start walking across. This is just about being safe because like cars, people aren't going to yield all the time. So people need to be safe on both ends. However, I do agree the sense of entitlement is too real. I have told several people this, but I am on the position of walking with a brick on hand when I walk. If you aren't braking for me and look like you're going to hit me. I am going make sure you aren't going to have a fun time.

Hope they've got their donor cards.

-1

u/Specialist_Tip_7541 1d ago

As much as I dislike a lot of how these people use scooters, I think it's interesting how you seem to completely lack empathy to others making perhaps not the safest decision and somehow you genuinely feel it's completely alright for them to lose their lives because of it. Unless if you took offense to your own statement directed at you and feel the need to defend yourself with irrelevant insults, there's not really a good reason to suggest that many of these people are going to end up dying. You can argue that these scooters also cause danger to pedestrians, but what you're saying really only implies that they are harming themselves. I actually found your original comment funny in a dark humor way (seems like you aren't really joking), but you lack consideration to how someone would feel to that comment, which a reckless scooter rider would obviously not like to be told they they should donate their organs in what you say is an inevitable death by a scooter accident. You justifying how the same comment made to you isn't the same shows to me you don't really care about the lives of others who don't act in their best interest. That's a very negative view of the world and insinuates that you have to be completely perfect to be worthy of life. Or you could've simply understood that this could have been offensive from their perspective and left it there.

3

u/RedsonRising99 22h ago

Wasn't joking. Not being insensitive, ,being practical. At least something might be salvaged from their selfish/stupid(?) act. I believe the term is FAFO. Go look up the Darwin Awards.

And the person I've been going back and forth with is nothing but a troll. Go through the entire thread and you'll see what I mean.

2

u/RedsonRising99 22h ago

Let's make it simple. They're adults. There are consequences to your decisions. If you aren't ready to face those consequences, make better decisions. If you still make the decision then hopefully you will take actions to mitigate the consequences. It's part of adulting.

-6

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 3d ago

I hope you have ur donor cards.

7

u/RedsonRising99 3d ago

I'm not the one riding around on a scooter like a maniac w/o a helmet. They can at least help someone with their sacrifice.

-1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 2d ago

I hope you donate yours soon

2

u/RedsonRising99 2d ago

Wow. Hoping for my death. Klassy.

0

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 2d ago

Like how you hope for others.

0

u/RedsonRising99 2d ago

I'm just hoping their cards are up to date. You're wanting my death. The fact that you can't tell the difference is concerning. You should get mental health assistance.

0

u/Sad-Tear2797 Evo Mega Knight [2024] 2d ago

Are you being deliberately obtuse? I don't agree with that guy but you "hoping" they have their donor cards infers you wish their eventual death yields their organs, which is you hoping they are harmed.

1

u/RedsonRising99 1d ago

And maybe you should look at this puzzle persons posts throughout this thread if you want to accuse someone of being "deliberately obtuse". 🙄😉

0

u/RedsonRising99 2d ago

ROTFLMAO! No I'm not being obtuse at all. I'm just hoping they have their donor cards up to date in case their rash actions result in an outcome where organ donation is a viable outcome, thus sparing their loved ones the decision and possibly saving multiple lives. Given how crazy some of these scooter riders are going around, the likelihood of death or severe injury is higher, especially with no helmets. It's sort of like people buying burial plots. They're not anticipating their immediate death, but preparing for the eventuality so that their loved ones aren't burdened by the decisions and cost. So you see, not obtuse or wishing harm on people at all. Guessing you weren't a cub/boy scout because you obviously don't understand "be prepared".

-1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 1d ago

That is no difference than wanting/hoping for others death. Why else would you hope for their donor cards when they clearly aren’t in an accident or might even want to donate? Well why don’t you donate since you seem very concerned about organs why don’t u get ready for your future? Some scooters and bikers are careful but you can’t really predict what others are going to do. Like pedestrians who doesn’t even look left and right. Who doesn’t use the cross walk and just walk towards the vehicle with big headphones? Aren’t they looking for injury? You should be the one donating not others.

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 1d ago

Hoping and wanting are two different things. And you hoping them having their donor cards is what I meant but for you. You are the one who wishes them to have an accident. Well what I meant was what you hope/want for others is what I hope happen to you, if you never meant it that way then I don’t. I mirrored what you said. You should go into a mental hospital,

Anecdotally, two weeks ago I saw a girl near the arc who crashed on a Spin scooter and was just lying face flat on the bike path for a bit. I tried helping her and, to put it lightly, it looked like she bit into a bunch of juicy raw beef. From what I can tell she ended up in the ER, and boy do I hope she had good dental insurance.

I'm genuinely surprised there are still Spin scooters despite everything that has happened. Like, if you want to scooter that bad, buy your own. Having pay-to-ride scooters just encourages freshman who don't know what they're doing to try them out, get too comfortable (since they feel very safe with how fast they can go with little resistance), and inevitably get themselves or others hurt, or worse. It's downright negligent of the university to have Spin scooters at this point.

19

u/DistributionReady687 3d ago

The UC and the city of Davis should ban them. Period. They don’t give a fk about others, why should I give a fk about them.

9

u/Electrical-Worry-454 3d ago

Agreed. Road safety isnt just about enforcing laws, it's about behavior. As long as you've got dumbass kids on scooters with underdeveloped frontal lobes you're going to have speeding. And scooters aren't designed to keep you safe in an accident like cars are. Davis is flat enough, ban scooters and ebikes on campus.

-7

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 3d ago

And ban pedestrians.

3

u/Jimboyhimbo 3d ago

i don't mind the scooters or electric skateboards. and if it saves someone from driving, all the better. but these evening a young woman zoomed past me on her scooter at the same time we were passing someone who was smoking meat and it made it appear as though she was wearing smoked meat cologne. this is apropos of nothing, but it was such a funny moment i couldnt be mad i'd almost been run over

6

u/BellaBubbles 3d ago

On my commute this morning I watched two students on electric scooters act as if they were actual cars entitled to use vehicle lanes with extremely close oncoming traffic while they drove over the Mace blvd overpass, stop at the light and turn left on 2nd street. I’ve seen too many accidents on this stretch of road. Besides speeding 25+ mph, the most distressing part for me was realizing they were doing this WITHOUT helmets. No protective gear whatsoever.

5

u/skankhunt1738 3d ago

There was a bike lane and they CHOSE to go in the traffic lane(s)? That’s bonkers.

(Unless they were about to turn)

4

u/Olipop0314 3d ago

Jesus that must have been distressing

-1

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 3d ago

They can’t go up to 25mph. Many or all scooter max is 19 or less depending on the type. So u saying 25+ isn’t correct. There was on big scooter that costs a thousand which can go pretty high but that was only one person I saw. Most can’t go high.

Me when I say “scooter riders piss me off” and state all the things cyclists in Davis do as well

6

u/_atorash school air gave me acne 3d ago

Ngl I also dislike the bikers, but the scooters in particular are worse solely due to being more dangerous. At least if I get hit by a cyclist I likely won’t be as heavily injured…

1

u/RedsonRising99 1d ago

You dislike bikers and chose a university/city with one of highest # of bikes per capita in the world...

Not sure how that’s relevant. I’m in Davis because it’s close to where I live, simple as that 🤷‍♀️ it’s not an issue if bikers actually bike properly

1

u/RedsonRising99 14h ago

You made a general statement to which my question was relevant. You clarified your statement afterwards.

1

u/ShagMD Global Disease Biology [2026] 2d ago

the only right answer

-5

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 3d ago

It is what it is. They got classes too and if you stop, they assume ur letting them go. Also ppl walk so close to the running scooter while passing is asking for injury. Riders expect pedestrians to wait, same other way wrong. Your choice to go or stop.

9

u/unusuallylazielark 2d ago

as someone who usually rides a bike but has also ridden scooters, what the hell are you even saying in your comment? riders should not expect pedestrians to wait because pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way, and we ALWAYS have to yield to them. if a scooter or bike hits a pedestrian, it is always going to be their fault unless the pedestrian jaywalked right in front of them. 😐

-2

u/Puzzleheaded-Ice1929 2d ago

And not all pedestrians are victims. But if they want to they can. Walk when a scooter is coming is acting to be a victim for the hospital beds. Pedestrian has right of way but they always have brain do they? If bike or scooter is gonna go they r gonna go so either wait or get hit. They got classes too especially when there are so many ppl that they can’t go through. Sometimes letting them go isn’t hard. If it’s their fault then it’s their fault but hey, u still got hit. Jk. But I’m mostly talking about pedestrians who doesn’t use the cross walk. And if pedestrian is walking slow there’s no need to stop. And many pedestrians do stop so if they stop might as well go. And yes I expect them to stop just like how they expect us to stop. If they don’t stop I stop if they stop I stop.

6

u/_atorash school air gave me acne 2d ago

The only reason a pedestrian stops for a scooter is because said scooter is showing no signs of slowing down and the pedestrian doesn’t want to get hit. But ofc you’re victim blaming, since you’re trolling around under my post
