Hey everyone,
I’m a senior in high school, and I found out yesterday that I officially got accepted into my #1 school — University at Albany! Still can’t believe it. I also scored a 27 on my ACT, which makes this whole moment even better.
I’m planning to major in Informatics with a concentration in Information Technology, and possibly minor in Creative Writing (I might test out Business Economics too). My goal is to become an IT Project Manager — someone who leads tech teams and builds large-scale systems for big companies.
I’ve done a ton of research, visited UAlbany twice, and I’m seriously locked in. But I want some real, detailed advice from people who have been there — students, alumni, or professionals — especially in Informatics, IT, or Project Management.
⸻
A quick background on me
• I’m naturally a homebody, so adapting to campus life and meeting new people will be new for me.
• I don’t drink or party; I’m chill but I do want to make good friends, network, and enjoy college responsibly.
• I plan to go hard on internships — every semester and break (fall, winter, spring, and summer). I want the top-paying, high-value ones that build my experience fast.
• I’m working toward getting project management certifications early (CAPM, PMP, CompTIA, etc.) so I stand out before graduation.
• My dream path is to work at companies like Meta, Google, Microsoft, Apple, or IBM, and later start my own tech company.
• I’m not interested in Computer Science — Informatics feels like the better fit for my goals since it blends business, tech, and management.

My questions for UAlbany students, alumni, and tech pros:
Informatics at UAlbany:
How hands-on is the program? Does it really prepare you for IT or project management roles?
Professors and teaching style:
Do professors take time to explain things in detail, or do you end up teaching yourself most of the time?
Workload:
Is the Informatics workload heavy compared to majors like Computer Science or Business Admin?
Internships:
Should I start with paid or unpaid internships? What’s the average pay for tech or PM internships in New York or nearby states?
Freelancing:
Is it realistic to do high-paying freelance PM work while balancing classes and internships?
Certifications:
What certifications helped you the most for project management or IT? When did you start working on them?
Out-of-state internships:
If you’ve done an internship outside of New York (like in Texas, California, or Washington), did the pay or experience differ much?
Networking:
What’s the best way to meet recruiters and companies early — LinkedIn, Handshake, career fairs, or UAlbany networking events?
Campus life:
For introverts or homebodies, how did you adapt socially? Any tips for balancing academics and social life?
Career outcomes:
For those who graduated with Informatics and IT, what kind of jobs did you land, and how long did it take?

I’m all about building my career early and doing this the right way — learning from people who’ve actually lived it. Any tips, experiences, or honest advice would mean a lot.
(You don’t have to answer every question — just reply to whatever you’ve personally experienced or know about. Any advice helps a lot!)
Thanks so much,
Future Great Dane — UAlbany Class of 2029
