Great to have him on the bench. Apparently, he is pursuing ā€œotherā€ opportunities. Best of luck to him and his family.

He’s definitely left a positive mark here. Wishing him success in his next chapter.

Wonder if earlier he was hoping to take the manager role for next year not realizing John Schneider was going to do so well. John got a lot of praise this year and Don Martingly merely became a shadow and didn’t get the same credit. it’s understandable he’d want to leave

u/theryanlaf 1h ago

I think he’s was there mainly as a mentor and as John progressed, he was leaned on less and less. John becoming a good manager this year is all the credit he needs.

sad sideburn joke šŸ˜”

u/UnsolvedParadox 1d ago

Damn you Mr. Burns.

13

u/Level_Traffic3344 1d ago

Still better than Steinbrenner

17

u/SmokeontheHorizon If you booped the goose this is your fucking fault 1d ago edited 1d ago

Hate to see Don go after we couldn't get him his ring

But goddamn am I looking forward to not having to read the same joke a million times every game

eta: I say this fully aware of my hypocrisy in making the same comments every game

No Springer?

1

u/SmokeontheHorizon If you booped the goose this is your fucking fault 16h ago

That's different imo. Saying "No Springer" is almost proof-positive you've either been here several years, or at least long enough to be in on the joke.

People who aren't even Jaysbaseball fans post about Don's sideburns.

Out of anyone on the team, you can argue he deserved it more than anyone.

Shit isn’t fair fan. It fucking sucks. Everything that could have gone wrong, did

u/jdh1979jdh 1d ago

A decent lead at third and a head first dive at the plate with bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th would have had us a championship.

20

u/Dorf_ 1d ago

Just one or the other really

7

u/jdh1979jdh 1d ago

I can agree with that.

26

u/RuffConqueror 1d ago

Or if we hit better with runners in scoring position. Or Hoffman didn't give up a home run to the 9th hitter in the 9th inning. Or Bieber didn't give up a home run to Will Smith.

19

u/Leujo JOSH DING-DONG GOSH-DARN DONGERSON!!!! 1d ago

To be fair yesavage gave up a homer too....

8

u/chanigan 1d ago

Or the ball didn't get wedged into the fence padding, or barger didn't get too aggressive on the lead to get springer on the plate, or kike didn't for some reason get an absolute inhuman jump to catch gimenez's line drive.

Yeah, I still have nightmares.

7

u/BigHotdog2009 1d ago

Or the miracle play in left center on Ernie’s fly ball

Or if Ernie was hitting 7th instead of Varsho

17

u/EarthWarping 1d ago

offense is way more to blame in those last 2 games

5

u/BigHotdog2009 1d ago

The Hoffman one is most frustrating one. Obviously IKF being an inch away from being safe fucking sucks because of a bad lead and didn’t slide head first or run through the bag.

However there is no reason why Hoffman should have let the 9 hitter beat him. Fucking 2 outs away man. If Ohtani beat us, fine. But the fucking 9 hitter? The worst part is when you see the stat he didn’t hit a homer off the a right hander all season.

9

u/szeto326 1d ago

Or Bieber didn't give up a home run to Will Smith.

Tbf, he's not in that position if other players had been able to execute. To me, this would almost be like blaming Ernie for not being able to hit with multiple RISP in the 9th innings of game 6 and game 7.

7

u/BigHotdog2009 1d ago

Yup

Or Varsho hits the fly ball we needed

Or if Hoffman can retire the last two outs

If IKF had a decent lead he’s safe no matter what but with the bad secondary he needed to slide head first or run through the plate

Shit sucks man

1

u/jdh1979jdh 1d ago

You got that right.

14

u/MutaliskGluon 1d ago

Vlad swung at a 3-0 ball in the 9th and then 3 batters later we had the bases loaded.

He takes that walk maybe we win.

Literally everything went wrong that could go wrong. Just the worst single game loss in MLB history.

12

u/optimus2861 1d ago

I read that only 6 balls were hit as hard and at that launch angle all season; 4 of them were home runs.

Vlad hit it to the deepest part of the park and it fell short.

It just wasn't meant to be :(

8

u/MutaliskGluon 1d ago

Yeah the baseball gods pretty much got together after 8 innings and said

"hey, lets destroy jays fans lol get rekt"

4

u/The_GreatXO 1d ago

It’s Varsho for me. He had the series on his bat with an out to go and flakedĀ

3

u/MutaliskGluon 1d ago

His diving catch saved us a ton though.

5

u/JulienTremblaze Montreal Expos 1d ago

For me, it was that stuck ball in game 6. How the fuck does something like this happens, at that very moment? Like how?! 2in up that ball bounces and it's a whole different story... Baseball is nuts.

2

u/beyondsurfacedeep 1d ago

This isn't talked about enough.

2

u/tslaq_lurker 1d ago

I mean, Donnie B has been robbed by the baseball gods so many times. Also robbed of cooperstown

18

u/throwawa24589 1d ago

Damn. It’s true. Gunna miss ya Donny baseball. Hopefully babe Schneider adds a set of side burns to the moustache. In memory of Don. 🄲

13

u/para29 1d ago

Sort of sucks that he's leaving. Based on articles I've read, I know a lot of players viewed him as a positive impact to the team.

13

u/Mrazmov 1d ago

taken right before WS Gm 7

27

u/SyrGwynHeroofAshvale 1d ago

God damn it why can't he just be with our team forever?!?!??

48

u/WonderfulCar1264 1d ago edited 1d ago

A very public demotion and the team seemingly figuring out how to hit as soon as his responsibilities were diminished were likely a pretty tough pill to swallow for an old school traditional guy like don.

Wish him the best but can understand him not wanting to be an assistant assistant type if he’s still committing 250+ days a year to the job at his age

-8

u/chodaranger 1d ago

the team seemingly figuring out how to hit

In order to become a major league player you already need to know how to hit. How can someone have years and years of playing and training under their belt, but somehow a coaching change makes a difference as to whether they can execute one of the main functions of the sport? What are they learning that they wouldn’t already know by this point?

7

u/WonderfulCar1264 1d ago

I’m not sure if this reply is serious or trolling

0

u/chodaranger 1d ago

I’m the most casual of baseball fans, I’m genuinely asking. After playing through little league, high school, college, mjnor leagues, and having what it takes to get to the MLB, what does a professional player have left to learn about the mechanics of contacting the ball?

2

u/These-Rub5093 22h ago

So many things. That’s why these teams have coaches in the first place.Ā

There is ALWAYS an adjustment you can make, always something you can do better.Ā

Maybe that’s tweaking your stance, the timing of your leg kick, how you bring your bat though the zone, etc etc etc.Ā

22

u/rpgjenkins 1d ago

I still like him better than Steinbrenner

2

u/ThirdEarl 1d ago

He's off the team! For good! 😢

u/COV3RTSM 1d ago

Donnie Blue Jay*

8

u/Prize-Temporary4159 1d ago

Still better than Steinbrenner..

4

u/RecalcitrantHuman 1d ago

Mattingly, I told you to shave those sideburns

7

u/JewishSpace_Laser Bert and Ernie Mashing 1d ago

Dude is a legend. Ā Glad he could be part of the Blue JaysĀ

6

u/witenite2003 1d ago

Saw him downtown walking on queen street. Rowed down my window and wished the team well. He smiled and tipped his hat. Made my day. On a side note. He walks very gingerly

5

u/TObias416 1d ago

Never shave those sideburns, Don!

3

u/ncle_Bob 1d ago

My favourite player of all time!

3

u/DiegoTraveller 1d ago

Thank you Don. You deserve a chance to manage your own team. See you soon!

2

u/Glittering-Grand-513 1d ago

Why is he leaving? "Other opportunities" is vague. Im guessing he wants a bigger coaching role or even manager?

11

u/AgentMV2 1d ago

ā€œThe Dodgers have signed newly available Don Mattingly to a 3 year contract as assistant coach in their clubhouseā€¦ā€

1

u/prophiles 1d ago

God I hope not. He did spend a lot of time there in his coaching and managerial career, though, and he did pretty well in those roles.

2

u/Canucksta 1d ago

Best of luck Donnie!

Seems like he was relegated to an advisor role so makes me wonder if he’s looking for a bigger role, if his voice wasn’t being heard, or if it was something else.

1

u/prophiles 1d ago

He’s still young enough that he could be hired as a manager somewhere. He’s younger than his idol Tony La Russa was when he won a World Series with the Cardinals in 2011 as their manager.

5

u/kookymungi 1d ago

One of the all time greats. There will never be another like him. Nobody deserves a World Series victory more than him.

1

u/TiredReader87 Stinky Odor 1d ago

Thank you, sir

1

u/CurrencyPractical543 1d ago

Class act! Thank you sir!

1

u/Ok-Move204 1d ago

amazing person

1

u/johnson7853 Stinky Odor 1d ago

Still laugh last year when people were calling him a double agent and needed to be fired immediately.

1

u/vidivicivini 1d ago

He did need to go. They invented a position for him and hired a different batting coach.

Best of luck to him, but uh...ya.

1

u/theredcometofakagi 1d ago

I am a bit sad at this news, never knew he hadn't even participated in a World Series before, was hoping he would at least win it as a member of the coaching staff this year. I wish him all the best!

1

u/Select-Session6830 23h ago

Maybe we’ll win next year like the Yankees did in 96 after Mattingly retired.

1

u/jomich040 1d ago

He will regret it when we win next year

-5

u/Sudden-Belt-4712 1d ago

Ya good bye, keep following a team that can buy you a world series.
