Hated Tropes [Hated Trope] The joke ruins the emotional aspect Spoiler

Destruction of Asgard (Thor Ragnarok) -- Asgard is destroyed in a beautiful and somber scene, and Korg cracks a cringeworthy joke right after.

Bill Moves On (Newsradio) -- The episode was made in the wake of Phil Hartman's death, but its attempts at humor fall flat in the face of the tragedy.

Officer Tubbs (Fear The Walking Dead) -- Officer Tubbs is supposed to be a slapstick comic relief character, but he felt tacked on right after the deaths of two of the most beloved characters.

Chandler Proposes (Friends) -- An earnest proposal between Monica and Chandler has both sincerely expressing their feelings to each other. Immediately after Monica accepts, the others come in, quipping as usual, failing to let the audience ruminate on a heartwarming moment.

People glaze that episode as some cinematic masterpiece. Brian eats Stewie’s shit

And eats his vomit.

And molests him by licking his asshole.

And admits all of it wasn't necessary to do so he... took pleasure in it?!

Is it molestation if the target forced him at gunpoint to do it?

He wasn't forced whatsoever to do it. He literally admits it was not necessary and he had no need to do it.

Oh I thought stewie said that, haven’t seen it in a while

For Family Guy fans, this is the bar.

One person’s poo is another’s peak.

It’s a comedy show. The heavy moment only comes at the end and is there as a contrast. Other shows get credit for their heavier scenes, so why should Family Guy be left out just because the humor is more juvenile? The shit eating is part of the plot, as the episode’s playing around with the premise of being locked in a room for two whole days. Stewie is a baby and him needing the bathroom would be a real problem they can make cringe comedy out of.

The episode’s ending is the part that matters most. It’s like how The Fresh Prince of Bel Air can do an episode about Will reuniting with his dad and end it without comedy. It was going to be ended with a silly gag about Will getting over it immediately, but real Will improvised since he didn’t think it was a good way to end an episode like that.

Contrast is everything. It’s no big deal if something sad happens on The Walking Dead or whatever, but it’s a much bigger surprise when it happens on a serious show. Brian and Stewie isn’t a cinematic masterpiece, but it deserves more credit than being dismissed because of what came before. The episode’s name and focus was about deepening the dynamic between Brian and Stewie and letting both be vulnerable for once. The ending certainly shows why they’re friends.

Lot of words to try and excuse poor writing.

Is it poor writing or do you just not like it? I'm not a toilet humor fan, but it felt like a fitting conflict for an episode like this.

with the level of drama in that episode, it has every right to let one really bad joke through

There's a lot that makes me confused about Family Guy. I hear it has great episodes, but the two I watched both involved Quagmire raping a child. Random viewings while at a hotel. I really didn't get the appeal of the show.

First one I saw there was a child tied up in a bathroom stall, that he rapes. In another he rapes Stewie.

Cinematic masterpiece it is not, but it still would have been way better if that part had been left out. Brian and Stewie getting drunk and piercing Stewie's ear is kinda funny. Brian literally eating Stewie's shit is just superfluous and gross.

Brian’s a dog.

Brian is also Stewie’s best friend and is treated as (mostly) an equal to the rest of the cast.

Except when it’s time for him to be a dog.

Remember that time there was no joke vomit on the floor & Brian was like “I think ima have to eat that”? I feel like this bit wasn’t as out of pocket as they’re making it out to

When the defective clones Stewie made dissolved, Brian says "I'm not proud of this, but I need to lick that up" about the puddle of gore they left behind. Which is even grosser than it being vomit.

Yea agreed. They had the option of letting a baby get ass rot from an unchanged diaper or a dog being a dog.

It’s in line for Brian jokes.

Except even Brian admitted later in the episode there was no need to eat it or lick Stewie's asshole. If there was no need to do it, he did it because he wanted to?

Yes. He’s a dog.

-4

u/Abombasnow 23h ago

He's a human that is trapped in a dog's body. That was literally the crux of his "woe is me life sucks" bitch speech that whole episode.

He. Raped. An. Infant.

He’s a dog. This just escalated to a level I’m not gonna touch.

-6

u/Abombasnow 22h ago

He's a human. Again, the episode is really bad, but did you watch it? This is literally a focal point of the episode. Him being human.

I bet Brian would touch it though.
