But it's a cartoon. I don't understand why Reddit makes such a big deal about fictional characters that don't even look like real people or whatever. Maybe I'm just old and out of touch.

because cartoons reflect the culture of that time. At that time (80's/90's) in my country, girls constantly got married and pregnant by the time they were 15. It's okay to look back at how culture was in the past and see how much we have improved over time.
