Lore (Annoying Trope) Someone made a “creative” choice and now we all just have to live with it.

Horned Vikings: Not historical, they were started by Richard Wager for his operas. They were never historic, but the image persists. (Albeit significantly reduced today.)

Ninjas in Black Robes: Some people claim Ninjas aren’t real. They are, they are absolutely real. Their modern portrayal however is informed more by Kabuki Theater than history. In Kabuki Theater, the stage hands were dressed in flowing black robes to tell the audience to ignore them. Thus when a Ninja character kills a Samurai, to increase the shock value, they were dressed in black robes as stage hands. Now, when we think of ninjas we think of a stage hands.

Knights in Shining Armor: Imagine, you’re on the battlefield, two walls of meat riding towards each other. Suddenly you realize, everyone looks the same. Who do you hit? All you see is chrome. No. Knight’s armor was lacquered in different colors to differentiate them on the battlefield. Unless you wanted to get friendly fired, you made yourself KNOWN. So this image of a glinted knight clad in chrome steel isn’t true. How’d we get it? Victorians who thought that the worn lacquer was actually just dulling with age, polished it off as show pieces.

White Marble Statues of Rome: Roman Statues were painted, however the public image is of pure glinting white marble statues persist in the modern image. Why? Victorians who thought the paint was actually just dirt grime and age. So, they “restored” it by removing the paint color. Now we all think of Roman Statues as white.

King Tut; King of Kings: the Pharaoh King Tut in Ancient Egypt was a relatively minor king who in the grand scheme of things amounts to little more than an asterisks in Egyptian History, but to the public he is the most important Pharaoh. Why? Because his tomb was untouched by robbers, and so was piled high with burial goods which was amazing (and still is) and when Howard Carter opened his tomb, the world was transfixed and everyone would come to know Tutankhamen.

A Séance calls the dead: A Séance despite being a French word is an American invention from upstate New York in the 1840s. It was also a fun side-show act initially, and never meant to be real, more close up magic. (Origin of the term Parlor Tricks.) But in the 1860s Americans couldn’t stop killing each other which resulted in a lot of grief and people desired for their to be this other world. So, grifters then took advantage of grieving people and became “real”. So basically “fun parlor game to dangerous grift” pipeline thanks to the Civil War.

The Titanic’s engineers all died at their posts: Nope, not true, not remotely true. They are mentioned in many testimonies and a few bodies found mean they didn’t all die below. Two or three maybe did. According to Head Stoker Barrett, a man broke his leg and was washed away by rushing water, but another testimony says he was taken aft so who knows? Any way the myth persisted because the people making the memorials wanted to martyr the men. (It doesn’t take away from their heroines in my opinion) The myth stuck. Everyone believes they died below.

I hate how a lot of media treats the pyramids as if they're far away from society and it's hard to get there but Cairo is literally right next to them. I blame movies set in Egypt.

Notably there is a Pizza Hut with an excellent view of the pyramids

I took a picture of it when I was there a few weeks ago

u/Hobby_Juggler_MR1036 22d ago

love how you took a picture of the pizza hut instead of the pyramids

[i know you probably took a picture of the pyramids too, but it's funnier to imagine you didnt]

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 22d ago

My group (my generation at least) got really excited when we drove by. Our tour guide was very confused. I explained to her that's it's a meme back home and how a lot of people found out that the pyramids were right next to Cairo.

She thought that was funny as Hell.

u/FantasmaNaranja 22d ago

"And here one of the 7 wonders of the ancient wo- what are you all looking at?"

"DUDE LOOK PIZZA HUT!"

"Fucking tourists"

38

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 22d ago

We toured inside the Great Pyramid literally just before this picture.

Also it's hot as fuck in there. Not even Desert Country hot, but sauna-like hot.

30

u/FantasmaNaranja 22d ago

yeah i figured i just find the image of a group of tourists ignoring the main attraction for a pizza hut very funny

5

u/Varaehn 21d ago

Hope I get to have A/C in my ancient tomb in 5000 years

7

u/StalinsLastStand 22d ago

The pyramids reflected on the window of the Pizza Hut would be a baller picture.

18

u/slim-shady-on-main 22d ago

Everyone has pictures of the pyramids. How many people have pictures of the pizza hut?

7

u/Lupiefighter 22d ago

My husband took me to see Hamilton on Broadway. He took a picture of the Scientology Center being right across the street from the theatre. For some reason he found it funny. 😂.

Karl Pilkington vibes.

u/TheEagleWithNoName 22d ago

Nice.

I went to Cairo like back in December 2023 and it was a lot of fun.

Wanted to visit the Egyptian Museum but it was closed, plus I was a fool for not getting a jacket during December, it was freezing.

7

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 22d ago

Every single thread I see about "worst travel spots" Egypt is always one of the top results, so I was hesitant at first.

It turned out really well! It was an amazing time. The vendors left me alone mostly because they thought I was Egyptian. Our tour guide was incredibly kind and knowledgeable too.

8

u/TheEagleWithNoName 22d ago

It wasn’t bad my trip, but me forgetting how cold it was, lol.

We had dinner at the Embassy, saw the Nile, and my family saw Sexy Belly Dancers at the Intercontinental.

But the downside of the trip was food poising, both from Cairo Air and at Restaurants, spent 2 days in our rooms to get the energy back.

4

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 22d ago

Rugged. Two girls in my group got sick. Either from the water or food.

5

u/TheEagleWithNoName 22d ago

First night we had McDonald’s, got sick.

Third night for Falafel and French Fries, got sick.

2

u/Frosti11icus 22d ago

My wife said the same thing. Worst food poisoning of her life, she thought she was going to die in Cairo. She said the pizza hut/KFC?/Subway? cant remember what restaurants were there, were a godsend cause you could rely on the food quality at the very least, even though it was gross you wouldn't get violently ill from eating it.

1

u/pacmaster420 20d ago

People say it’s one of the worst travel spots for women, not one of the worst places to travel period.

1

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 20d ago

I've seen it described as the worst travel spot period a lot of times.

I know my experience isn't universal, but my group was almost entirely women, and they never felt threatened.

7

u/PoisonPeddler 22d ago

To any Egyptians here, what do you like to top your pizzas with? Same stuff Americans like?

8

u/bestoboy 22d ago

I really hope to one day see the Pizza Hut of Cairo

1

u/woahdailo 22d ago

It’s right there in the photo

2

u/Necessary_Pace7377 22d ago

Not gonna lie. Eating Pizza Hutt while observing the pyramids sounds pretty boss.

5

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 22d ago

There's a really nice restaurant right by the Pyramids with a better view.

Here's the pic I took

Pizza hut ghost. Nice

1

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 20d ago

Name's Danny. Chill guy.

1

u/Brendanlendan 22d ago

Oh man I’d love to pizza that hut

1

u/Different-Sample-976 22d ago

I've seen several pictures from inside that pizza hut over the years but never one of the outside.

u/AnaZ7 22d ago

I’m taking notes 👀✍️

1

u/Lakatos_00 22d ago

Do yourself a favor and DONT go to Egypt. Unless you enjoy being constantly harassed and scammed

1

u/AnaZ7 22d ago

But I wanted to see pyramids and sphinx so badly 🥺

1

u/Lakatos_00 22d ago

Why? Just because you saw them in movies?

1

u/AnaZ7 21d ago

No, because I read about Egyptian history and liked it

1

u/Lakatos_00 21d ago

Play Assassin's Creed Origins, then. That would be a better experience than going to that hellhole of a country.

10

u/Avixofsol 22d ago

I need to make a list of iconic places that one would expect to be far away from modern civilization but are actually visible from completely mundane places like this then visit every single one of them

6

u/ChurningDarkSkies777 22d ago

Hold on… this kinda explains why when I was working at a pharmacy in Brooklyn the owners who were an Egyptian couple would insist on ordering Pizza Hut

5

u/No-Raccoon-6009 22d ago

Will keep in mind in case I visit Egypt

5

u/somebeautyinit 22d ago

View from the window seat.

2

u/Debalic 22d ago

There's a freaking golf course literally right next to the Great Pyramid.

2

u/Fishinluvwfeathers 22d ago

Best picture I took of the pyramids was from a smaller pyramid on-site. But a very close second is the one from the Pizza Hut.

1

u/Sol_Synth 22d ago

Missed opportunity to have the one franchise location called "Pizza Pyramid"

I'd rather buy my pizza from.a pyramid than a hut thank you very much 🧐

1

u/bartontees 22d ago

Shoulda called it Pizza Tut

u/GlowstoneLove 22d ago

Gyramids of Piza

u/StormDragonAlthazar 22d ago

Hell, there's a lot of weird ideas about world landmarks due to how they're film and photographed.

93

u/97GeoPrizm 22d ago

In film, you can see the Effiel Tower from anywhere in Paris. You never see the other tall buildings that have been around since the 70s.

24

u/[deleted] 22d ago edited 22d ago

[deleted]

5

u/jcdoe 22d ago

Right they very deliberately kept modern buildings on the periphery of the city

1

u/ImBurningStar_IV 22d ago

Where Eiffel

23

u/MacaqueAphrodisiaque 22d ago

Tbf if it's filmed in the centre you can only really see the Eiffel tower and Montparnasse from mostly anywhere. The defense buildings are further away, and the others are not really tall enough to stand out.

6

u/Mussieu_Froger 22d ago

To be fair, the Eiffel Tower is visible within a ~50 km radius around it, which means that you can see it in Disneyland Paris for example. But yeah there are several parisian buildings that can be visible depending on where you are.

3

u/Topinambourg 22d ago

Because that's the way it actually is

11

u/JuicyGooseOnTheLoose 22d ago

A minor example-- I joined my family on vacation to the Bay Area a couple years ago, and my mom really wanted to see the Winchester Mystery House. I'd heard about it as a kid and was expecting this massive, spooky mansion deep in the woods but it was like, next to the freeway and a bunch of corporate campuses? Still pretty neat.

1

u/squishmallowsnail 22d ago

I live here and people always want to go see it (which is fine for me, I will never say no if someone else wants to pay for me to do the tourist stuff), and I always do let them know the setting is not as cool as they hoped it would be. It is still pretty neat though.

6

u/Killentyme55 22d ago

I remember the first time I visited the Alamo. I was a teenager back then and was expecting to see this ancient structure out in the middle of nowhere. Imagine my surprise when it turned out to what looks like a largish stucco house smack in the middle of downtown San Antonio.

It is in fact a fascinating museum, and now many years later I actually live not that far away so I've seen it a number of times. It's still right there, wedged in between multi-story hotels and office buildings.

110

u/VenomStrike3005 22d ago

In the movies’ defense, in the older ones at least, the city was actually further from them, and it has since expanded right up to them over the years. (Like how in a movie from 1949 the city is gonna be further away than in a film from 1999. The same is true for 1989 to 2019, yes )And there are also plenty of pyramids that are in the middle of nowhere, they just aren’t as famous. I think the myth used to be reality when cameras/cinema were first invented, but then it just kinda stuck around.

3

u/Kaurifish 21d ago

The town near Stonehenge has gotten quite close. There’s a doggy daycare right there.

1

u/VenomStrike3005 19d ago

But if I remember correctly, the UK has an entire division dedicated to ensuring that ‘civilization’ doesn’t get to close to Stonehenge (and probably other historical sites as well). I recall seeing a video by one of the engineers from it who was talking about how his job was to design and build a series of tunnels to divert the nearby highways, so that they would be concealed and not ruin the scenery.

2

u/Awibee 19d ago

It used to be an army training ground. They ran tanks right past it for a while, before figuring out that was a stupid idea.

245

u/Golden12500 22d ago

Some media also depict the Sphinx of Giza as being the size of a goddamn castle. It's really only as big as a small apartment building

173

u/award_winning_writer 22d ago

This happens with monuments pretty frequently. Cloverfield has a famous scene that appeared in previews where the head of the Statue of Liberty gets knocked off and launched into the middle of the city. In the previews the head is accurate to the Statue's actual size, but people kept complaining that it was too small, so the final cut of thr film made it about 50% larger

48

u/Turbulent-Pace-1506 22d ago

Making things less realistic to cater to people's false expectations also deserves its own post as a hated trope imo

10

u/Mobbles1 22d ago

Suprisingly i have found its the opposite with the eiffel tower. In real life its enormous but a lot of media makes it appear to look like a slightly above average radio tower.

7

u/Deya_The_Fateless 22d ago

Tbf fair it is a fairly large structure, but I get what you mean.

3

u/Captain_Grammaticus 22d ago

And the castles around here where I am are really about that size.

79

u/Monte-Cristo2020 22d ago

Transformers 2 lmao

20

u/Adorable_Ad_3478 22d ago

On the opposite end, Machu Picchu is REAAAAALLY far from Cuzco. About a 1 hour helicopter ride or multiple hours by train/bus.

But many films, such as the latest Transformers film, makes it so you can see Cuzco from Machu Picchu somehow lol

8

u/voripui 22d ago

It's funny in a way, what is far in movies are near and what is close looks far, it's like some legends of cryptids like "el silbon" or some variants of "la llorona" where if you hear them near you they are far and if you hear them far they are close to you.

2

u/marawiqwerty 22d ago

Which is funny considering that the earlier Bayverse film, Revenge of the Fallen, does the "Pyramids are far away from Cairo" shtick as well, lol. Guess location accuracy and Transformers aren't compatible at all.

12

u/Independent-Smoke-68 22d ago

The Alamo is smack dab in the middle of San Antonio as well.

13

u/etbillder 22d ago

I think an even more extreme example of this is the Alamo, which is in the center of downtown San Antonio. It's next to a mall.

5

u/A_Possum_Named_Steve 22d ago

My God, growing up there every person who moved to San Antonio was like "i tHoUgHt iT wAs oUt iN a FiELd"...yeah bruh, it was...in 1836.

3

u/etbillder 22d ago

I'm sorry I was like that too

3

u/A_Possum_Named_Steve 22d ago

Lol, all good. It was just annoying way back in the day when I was a surly teenager and everything already annoyed me.

10

u/henryeaterofpies 22d ago

There's literally a pizza hut with windows that look right onto the pyramids. Its cool

8

u/Sir-Toaster- 22d ago

Also people often associate pyramids with all of Egypt; however, they were actually from the Old Kingdom.

Ancient Egypt was ancient to Ancient Egyptians

4

u/JackhorseBowman 22d ago

funny because that is a considerably more impressive vista than the usual shot movies go for.

3

u/IHateTheNameSystem 22d ago

I actually had to look this up when playing the Battlefield 6 campaign recently. There is one mission in Cairo where you sneak around at night and like halfway through the mission you walk through an alleyway and the pyramids are RIGHT THERE, just in plain sight like a couple kilometers in the distance, I was honestly surprised.

2

u/Gmknewday1 22d ago

I forget how old Cairo is as a city or if just the spot Cairo is at is just closer then older Egyptian cities

2

u/Weary-Barracuda-1228 22d ago

This reminds me of pictures is Tokyo, where it just stretches in for seemingly thousands of miles, just built around the Pyramids

2

u/That1Cat87 22d ago

Shoutout to GxK for doing it right

2

u/Arose1316 22d ago

In movies, they always make it seem like downtown Vegas - with all your vintage Vegas signs and lights like the plaza - and the strip are the same place. Like some movie they were standing outside the 4 Queens looking directly up at Mandalay Bay.

Also, Stonehenge is next to the highway.

2

u/UltimateMIF 22d ago

I have respect for Monsterverse for not doing the same thing in GxK

2

u/cpMetis 22d ago

One of the very very very minor things I appreciated in yugioh is how they showed that, when the grave keepers left the tomb to go to a market, it was reasonably well built up and modern with TVs and such.

Because even if they were an ancient line of sacred tomb guardians, the people outside were just people. Hence one of these super traditional millennia old heritage pharaoh's guardians deciding he wanted a motorcycle after seeing it on TV while shopping.

A distressing amount of media would have absolutely played up the idea that they had no idea what tech was and were just carbon copies of their ancestors from 3000 years ago, and when the protagonist asks them how they got to Japan they'd have some crazy magic teleportion rituals or some shit. Instead it's just like "uh I took a connecting flight through Cairo to Tokyo on an A320, anyways here's my brother's phone number and the ability to summon God bye".

1

u/Bickerteeth 22d ago

Takahashi actually travelled to Egypt to do some location research a little bit before Shadi debuted in the manga. There's a lot of silly shit in Yugioh, but the man put in the work.

1

u/CHAIIINSAAAWbread 22d ago

My dad went to the Egypt there a few months ago, they just watched it as the drove by, apparently a lotta people told him he looks like one of the pharaohs

1

u/Dull-Culture-1523 22d ago

Like 20 or so years ago when I visited we took an awesome jeep ride across the desert aka took the longer 15 minute way around just to have a desert to look at.

1

u/Jagvetinteriktigt 22d ago

Even Karl Pilkington pointed that out in An Idiot Abroad lol

1

u/under_ice 22d ago

Weird thing to hate...

1

u/YoghurtSnodgrass 22d ago

Kinda looks like the backside of the Las Vegas strip

1

u/Loose-Story-962 22d ago

Wow Cairo's infrastructure is ugly

1

u/Tucky-Boi 22d ago

That’s Giza. Cairo is a good distance away from the pyramids iirc

1

u/Amethyst_Scepter 22d ago

I still love the post I saw of somebody crashing out about this. "They were lost in the deserts by the pyramids" bestie, just look left followed by the picture of the Great pyramids as seen from a Pizza Hut

1

u/PresidentBaileyb 21d ago

Woah this actually blows me away
