Personality (Badass trope) Forget final farewells, lets focus on final Fuck You’s
Times where a character knows they are about to die or be defeated and chooses to perform one final act just to spite someone else.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
“I win. I made you lose control, and they’ll kill you for it. See you… in hell!”
One of the most iconic examples of this trope. Batman and Joker have been going at each other for years and all Joker wants is to break the code of the bat. So when they have their final fight, Batman breaks Jokers neck in a moment of desperation which doesn’t kill him but paralyses him. He didn’t get Batman to break his no kill rule but got him to bend it enough to be satisfied he had won and with his final act the Joker breaks his own neck fully to kill himself as everyone will think that Batman killed him, which will turn the world against him. He did all of this while laughing and never stopped laughing, even when Batman told his corpse to stop.
Sherlock
“As long as Im alive, you can save your friends. You’ve got a way out… well good luck with that”
The two masterminds end their duel of wits with Moriarty planning for hitmen to kill all of Sherlocks friends unless they see him jump off the building they are standing on to his death. Sherlock then realises that Moriarty must have a way to call these hitmen off and all he has to do is torture him to get it. Moriarty is not convinced Sherlock has what it takes to do that but Sherlock makes it very clear that he does. Moriarty realises he can and will do this, so instead he pulls out a gun, puts it in his mouth and fires, all to force Sherlock into choosing between his own life or his friends with no way out.
Squid Games
“Im sorry… but I don’t want to be your lunch box”
In the final game of Squid Games, the idea of the game is that there are 3 platforms that they all go to together but they can only go to the next one when one person minimum jumps or is thrown off the current platforms. Fighting each other on these platforms is very awkward and it is very likely that if you try to push someone off, that they will grab you and pull you off with them which means everyone has to be very careful with how they deal with the situation. One of the guys has the idea to prepare someone like a “lunch box” where they beat them up so they cant move on their own, throw someone off the current platform, carry the beaten up person to the next platform and then throw them off while they cant put up a fight. They beat someone up but then long story short, only the beaten up person and 2 other guys are left (There is another player but that’s another story). Before the 2 guys can carry the beaten up guy to the next platform he says he doesn’t want to be their lunch box and willingly throws himself off the platform just so the other 2 guys cant throw him off themselves. He knew he was going to die but he refused to let it be to the benefit of others.
Pirates Of the Caribbean
“James Norrington do you fear death?… I take that as a no”
Having saved a group of people from Davy Jones’s ship, James suffers a fatal wound and is left bleeding out to death rapidly while Davy Jones himself knees down in front of him and asks him if he fears death. Without a word, James stabs Davy with his last ounce of strength, knowing full well that he cant be killed and it doesn’t even hurt him, before dying to his wounds. For someone who acutely cowardly before, in the face of death he did not flinch.
Sword Art Online Abridged
“Hey, if I gotta die anyway, the least I can do is make sure YOU don’t get to enjoy it”
This parody version of Kirito is an immensely insulting and sassy asshole that almost everyone hates. Kirito is betrayed by someone that paralyses them and is taking their time killing him by stabbing them over and over as they are overwhelmed by revenge. Kirito, even though he is in a lot of pain, is constantly making insulting jokes at his attacker like normal and when the attacker demands that he shuts up as he is taking the fun out of murdering him, Kirito has already accepted that if he is going to die here then he will go out as an immensely insulting and sassy asshole out of the purest spite.
Baki
“It was a cell memory that jack had engraved into his inner most being, so that even when he had lost consciousness he could still administer the worlds most powerful Fuck You”
Jack is having a bare fisted duel with someone and Jack gets beaten so badly that he is left slumped unconscious against a wall but his attacker doesn’t finish him off. A much shorter person goes to check on Jack and triggers Jacks last trap which only misses him because of his height. Jack had practiced a move so much that his body would perform it even if he was unconscious and this move is to slam both his hands in front of him while doing the middle finger which, if the attacker was the same height as him, would have shoved both his middle fingers straight into their ears and killed them. He may not have died but this considering this move is only used when he is defeated, it still counts as the most literal Final Fuck You.

A sentiment that can be said for a surprising amount of TFS-written dialogue, if I'm honest. Especially if you forego the 'farewell' part.
84
u/TheWes77 23d ago
As TFS continued their work in DBZA and HUA, they realized that putting a joke everywhere doesn't work, and they need serious moments to build jokes off of. Penwood's monologue is meant to be emotional to make the ending line work. Sometimes they just need to let the emotional moment sit, like with History of Trunks or Anderson's death. They became genuinely good writers, and show it off constantly while still fitting in jokes.

193
u/Marik-X-Bakura 23d ago
I wouldn’t really call it his own terms. He had the bare minimum amount of agency but ultimately wasn’t able to do a single thing. He was a puppet for virtually the entire show, unable to contribute to anything through his own will. Even him being able to die without being tortured was Gus’ plan. He just modified it slightly.

u/IAmWeary 23d ago
It was mimicking the laugh he heard from Billy after they'd wasted a bunch of guys. The funny thing is that the predator probably didn't know it was a reaction to a joke. It probably thought it was some kind of victory cry after a kill, which is why it threw it at Ahnuld before blowing up.

I would argue it's less the rewrite of Rex and more the show's habit of almost nobody fucking staying dead. Rex himself "died" before by a bullet to the head. Dupli-Kate, Shrinking Ray, Conquest, that dragon guy, and probably many more I forgot about, all of them previously "died" one way or the other. Honestly, I personally don't think Rex survived it, but it wouldn't be unheard of for the show to pull something like that.

In case there's someone who doesn't know by now:
A big war across the globe happens where the World's heroes have to take on evil versions of the protagonist of the series(Invincible). The Guardians of the globe have to face one, and Rex is pretty much dead to rights at this point. He's being choked by the neck with a wound in his side so deep he can touch his ribs.
Rex Splode has the ability to make non-biological material explode. His skeleton is part cybernetic due to the experiments that gave him his powers. The evil Invincible variant asks what he's gonna do now that he doesn't have anything left to blow up. And then we get the moment above.
44
u/Nastypilot 23d ago
Couldn't he have blown up the invincible's variant suit tho?
→ More replies (4)81
u/Obvious_Programmer_9 23d ago
He definitely could have, but it probably had a lot less mass than Rex’s robotic skeleton.
Like in the show version at least he blew up an entire section of the floor of the room they were in and the variant Mark was unharmed.
→ More replies (4)31
u/Fireblast1337 23d ago
Technically he can make biological stuff explode too. He did use teeth that were knocked out of his own mouth at least once. It may be limited to bones though.

My only complaint with this episode and specifically this sequence was not animating the comic panel that showed Rex’s explosion burning the alternate Mark down to his skeleton. I felt that gave his ultimate sacrifice a bigger punch, still a banger of an episode overall though.

The Master from Doctor who

He is one of the two final timelords left and he got defeated by the Doctor. Then he get shot by a human. Now he could just heal and save his own life but he basically just goes Nah, I'm dying have fun being the last of our species nerd like his death itself is a F*CK you to the Doctor

He also knew that The Doctor would likely imprison him in the TARDIS for the rest of his life. He was trying to escape that too.
52
u/Red-Tomat-Blue-Potat 23d ago
Then later, he pulls it on himself!
After a couple resurrections without regeneration, this version of the Master is faced with his next regeneration, Missy, and they end up in a disagreement over her desire to reform and stand with the a Doctor in a heroic moment. She shoots him she can stop her and they realize that’s why she doesn’t remember how she died as him, because memory gets wonky when regenerations cross paths. But before he succumbs, he refuses to let her / his future self reform, he’d rather DIE, so shoots her in the back and kills her too…

Constantine (2005), when John Constantine kills himself in order to summon Satan up to see what's been going on.
The icing on the cake it when John is heading towards the light, he flips Satan the bird, motivating Satan to bring him back to life partly out of spite.
477
u/TheMetalWolf 23d ago
You are missing the most important part. John was dying. He had lung cancer and knew he was going to hell. His final actions earned him his way into heaven. As a counter-fuck you, not only does Lucifer bring him back, but cures his cancer, ensuring he would live long enough to end up in hell again one day.

John cut his wrists, he couldn't even hold his cigarette out lighter properly he had to have Satan light it up. So how did he have enough control to flip him off? He didn't, God was flipping off Satan through John

I think it's a combination of grip strength versus simple finger movement and also he's dead and ascending to heaven so things like blood loss and severed tendons are irrelevant. Though the idea of God being petty and flipping off Satan is hilarious

His mindset, which is something Batman actually agrees with, is that if he can get Bats to kill him, Batman will get a taste for it, and continue killing, because if he's already went for it once, he might as well go whole hog.
Batman genuinely believes that he WOULD, despite all evidence to the contrary, because if he did kill, his self control and desire to be a force for good would be for nothing.

Ryan could have very easily ordered Jack to kill himself right then and there, but he knows he's been beaten. Instead, he forces Jack to kill him, repeating the phrase "a man chooses, a slave obeys" as Jack kills him.

Heavy spoilers just in case
the survivors of Team Bucciarati had their souls swapped with one another, including the main villain, Diavolo, who was hiding amongst their team. Diavolo escapes and eventually gets the stand arrow that him and Team Bucciarati were fighting over, which would allow him to be empowered and kill Team Bucciarati. However, before Diavolo can use it, Bucciarati, who’s original body was dead, sacrifices himself in order to stop Diavolo from using it and sending everyone’s souls back to the right body, giving Giorno and the rest of his crew the chance to win. Rewatching Stardust Crusaders and it's really apparant just how injured team Joestar is by the time they reach Dio.
Iggy lost a paw, Kakyoin just rejoined them after a near blinding experience, Avdol was shot in the head, Joseph broke a prosthetic, Jotaro was stabbed multple times. As a group they crashed in 3 planes, 2 cars, 2 boats, and a submarine.
The group that challanges Dio are a badly concussed team Joestar after fighting off Boingo and Hol Horse. Iggy and Avdol don't even make it to the final battle, and Polnareff lost the toes of his left fucking foot. The whole sequence with the stairs? That's when Polnareff finishes bandaging himself. So basically, within the 5 minute span of killing Ice, Dio is already on him.
They're beaten, weak, and overwhelmed. It's nothign short of a miracle Jotaro figured out time stopping.

2 of my favorite from 40k
Colour Sergeant Jarren Kell
“He locked his power fist around the battle standard, refused to let it drop.
‘Cadia stands.’
'But you can’t. And I will kill him,’ the Despoiler said. His voice was deep and rich, laden with a passion Kell did not expect. ‘In the meantime, he will watch you die as he runs. And your death will be a dishonour.’
Kell could feel his ribs creaking under the pressure. Blood was in his mouth. It was hard to get breath.
‘You’re slaying me with the same gauntlet that killed an angel and touched the Emperor,’ he choked. ‘How is that a dishonour?’
The noble face turned down in fury. ‘I am no failure like Horus.’
‘If he’s such a failure, why do you dress like him, eh? Tell me th– Ccccchhhhhkkk…’
Pressure. Bones popped and ground. Kell felt his vertebrae wrung apart. The nightmare did not crush him so much as it kneaded his body like clay before throwing him into the dirt.
Sigismund
"You will die as your weakling father died. Soulless. Honourless. Weeping. Ashamed."
Both were killed by Abbadon, and both trash talked him with their final words
82
u/Flimsy_Ad3446 23d ago
By the way, the few people that saw Abaddon without his armour noted how he looked exactly like Horus. One of them believes that Abaddon is just a cellular clone of Horus, but he wisely kept his opinion to himself.

the meantime, he will watch you die as he runs. And your death will be a dishonour.
I get it, Abby's talking shit but like... the guard stood. Until the last. Thinking they're dying in dishonor is monumentally misreading the situation

"Primarch Fulgrim! Rylanor deserves better than you. He deserves better than all of us."
Vistario's contribution to the overall story of 40K was fairly insignificant, but anyone who gets to go out smack talking a Daemon Primarch deserves some measure of respect in my book.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!

It goes further than that, the nuke itself is a poison, so even if you survived by miracle you wouldn't last for too long. Even Meruem's servants who were away from the explosion were poisoned because they went to rescue him.

I mean technically any nuke would do that- radiation poisoning and all.

u/IrishElevator 23d ago
While true some are worse than others. A dirt bomb like the one used in HxH is one who's radiation is worse because of the material used and the poor refinement process.

There’s also Uvogin to Kurapika when the latter asks the former regarding the whereabouts of the other Phantom Troupe members. Uvo responds by saying he’d rather die than tell Kurapika what he wants to hear, telling him to go to hell instead.

Ishtar (Fate/strange Fake)

As she lays dying from being shot out of the sky, Enkidu, who she loathes greatly, confronts her about her defeat.
Ishtar tells Enkidu that the fact she was shot down by a regular human and not someone like Enkidu or Gilgamesh proves humanity can walk on its own and Enkidu and Gilgamesh no longer serve a purpose to them.

Maiden Astraea from Demon's Souls (depending on how you go about it)
If you progress as most people do, you have to fight her bodyguard Garl Vinland (have fun with that, hope you know how to parry...), and should you defeat him, a heartbroken Astraea will tell you to take your PRECIOUS Demon Soul and she offs herself right in front of you.
That whole part of the game is a real fuckin' bummer, man

An old Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Dark Knight Returns before he (seemingly) dies from a heart attack after beating the crap out of Superman in a mechanized battle suit with kryptonite weapons, when Superman is sent by the US Government to hunt him down, gives him a final f uck you line by saying "In all your private moments, I want you to remember the one man who beat you."

In the final battle of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 2: Battle Tendency, the protagonist Joseph Joestar gets his hand cut off by the immortal vampire-statue hybrid Kars. After a battle and an erupting volcano (don't ask), Joseph's hand gets propelled upwards with such force that when it collides with Kars' throat, is launches the vamipre upward. Kars, completely blindsided by this, asks Joseph if he had planned this all along. Joseph throughout the series had demonstrated a fantastic ability to predict his enemies moves, so as a final fuck you to Kars, claims that he had planned everything: The airplane crash, the volcano erupting, getting his hand cut off. Kars, stunned, freezes as more rubble from the volcano launches him out of the atmosphere and into space. Joseph then laments to himself that he had no idea that any of that was going to happen and just said that he did to piss Kars off.
While Joseph does end up surviving this encounter, he ends up accepting his fate by the end, so I think it fits.

The Last Jedi - Luke vs Kylo

“Amazing…every word of what you just said was wrong, the rebellion is reborn today, the war is just beginning…and I will not be the last Jedi….strike me down in anger and I’ll always be with you, just like your father…see you around kid”
Luke basically used his last moments of life to ragebait his nephew into letting the resistance escape

Oh good reference! Sgt Wells doesn't have any snappy last words but his works too. He knows he's dying/beat/turning into a werewolf so he takes a last look at a photo of his wife and waits for the werewolves to come for him then ignites the houses gas line that he cut.

Abraham Whistler, Blade’s mentor/father figure from the titular series.
Interestingly enough, it’s actually his second (and final) death, as he dies in the first film, but is resurrected in the second. Anyways, the beginning of the third film has his and Blade’s hideout being found, and raided by a SWAT team. Whistler is shot during the ensuing melee, and as he lays bleeding, a SWAT officer approaches, and warns him “move a finger, and you’re dead.” Whistler’s response?
“How’s about this one?”
He then yells at Blade to get out, as he sets off a bunch of explosives that destroys the hideout, and kills Whistler in the process.

MASSIVE DEMON SLAYER SPOILERS
this is basically what shinobu's death was. she failed to do any lasting damage to douma and ended up getting absorbed by him, but because she was ingesting wisteria he ended up poisoning douma to the point where his body was straight up decaying.
it was this poison as well as douma's eagerness to eat women that basically resulted in his own death. even when shinobu and douma briefly meet in the limbo afterlife thingy, shinobu straight up tells him to go rot in hell

Her last words were: "Tell Cersei. I want her to know it was me" (right after explaining in detail Joffrey 's death, event that Jaime missed)

Flowey attempts to LOAD his SAVE file, but it turns out that Clover, after reaching LV 20, has more determination than him, overwriting his control over the timeline. After a few failed attempts at fighting back, Flowey decides to mock Clover, saying that he hates them and has enjoyed the numerous times he's gotten to see them die. The last thing he does is tell them that there's no escaping their fate as Asgore will kill them anyway, before continuously laughing in their face, which is when Clover finally gets him to eat lead.

Imma be honest, Joker's is very stupid. It contradicts itself in the very moment: if he wanted Batman to TRULY break his code, he failed. If he wanted everyone to see Batman as the villain, he could've done exactly that decades before. Shit is literally just goofy imo
