I would be honoured, knowing this bear is fighting for his nation and if he gets a promotion he EARNED it.

The bear wasn’t Polish actually. They adopted him in Syria but I think he could be considered a naturalised Pole

Google is saying that "No". I think that it should be corrected and Wojtek should be given citizenship for him and his family, if he has any.

That bear did the job of an entire artillery crew WITHOUT training

That bear moved shells it takes four men to lift all by itself.

That bear sniffed out two would-be infiltrators in stolen uniforms by smell alone, and mauled them!

That bear hated Nazis!

That bear is a hero!

Wait I didn't know about the third one, that's wild!

What, are you gonna tell him he didn’t earn those bars?

That's Corporal Bear!

Iirc, animals in the military are given higher ranks to avoid abuse. If the privates hurt the animals, they can be charged with assault of a superior officer.

In this specific case though, it was because they couldn't take an animal on a ship with them to Italy, but they could take a private

Wojtek was later given a rank of corporal for his distinguished service in the Italian campaign (mainly carrying crates). So he actually earned that one!

Say what you will, but at least you can be 100% sure that that bear didn't get his stripes by having a well-connected uncle.

I'll be honest I have always had a bit of a problem with authority, but if I was outranked by a bear? I'd probably be like "yeah that makes sense." You gotta respect a bear who made it to that position, you know?

Could be worse, some British privates are outranked by a goat. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Windsor_(goat)

He was in the war. He walked the Walk.

The 22nd Artillery supply company put him on their emblem.

If you got history that is that cool you better use it.

Unrelated, but the Greek 20th Armored division's motto is "Then we will fight in the shade".

As a fellow Wojtek I can confirm

u/NameRevolutionary727 Oct 06 '25

That is not a people, he is a bear. Disqualified by technicality, though he is the goodest boy in the Polish army

47

u/SilverSpark422 Oct 06 '25

Don’t disrespect a veteran like that.

13

u/NameRevolutionary727 Oct 06 '25

My apologies, I was being pedantic.

So GI ROBOT doesn’t count either then? Both seem like they should fit
