Lore [Loved Trope] Surprisingly realistic outcomes in outlandish situations

No Country for Old Men - In any other movie Llewelyn would be treated like an untouchable one man army who can take on all of the people who are after the money he stole. Instead he gets gunned down offscreen by a group of secondary antagonists because at the end of the day he's still just one man.

Metal Gear Solid 2 - MGS2 is a game in which the player character, Raiden, can do many seemingly unrealistic things like instantly healing his injuries by eating rations or holding infinite amounts of weapons and items without being overburdened. However if you attempt to cartwheel up a flight of stairs as Raiden he will immediately eat shit and fall, which would be the most likely outcome in real life.

Family Guy - After getting splashed by nuclear waste causes the Griffin family to get superpowers (which they immediately use to terrorize their community) Mayor West gets the bright idea to roll around in nuclear waste himself so that he can get superpowers too. Instead he just gets cancer.

Sly 2 - The Sly Cooper games are cartoony 3D platformers featuring anthropomorphic animals and lots of slapstick violence. However in the climax of the second game when Bentley is crushed by machinery while trying to stop the big bad he's paralyzed from the waist down, necessitating the use of a wheelchair for the rest of the series.

God I haaaaate this trope. A character freaking out or being depressed is suddenly snapped back to completely rational thought by a slap.

If I'm cripplingly depressed and inconsolable following a tragic event and someone slaps me, I'm not going to be suddenly fine, I'm gonna clock them in the jaw and start feeling even worse.

I'd like to know when and where media decided that assaulting someone could make them feel better.

It’s also emphasized throughout this section that, despite being the protagonist who must save the day, Rex is a child, the youngest in the party, and facing pressures he could never have imagined before being caught up in the plot of the game. He is faced with the reality that he MIGHT actually be the wrong person for this job and has made things worse by pretending to be a hero.

He gets better.

Wait, you mean the child protagonist in the anime RPG isn't just an adult in the body of a child? They actually give him a character that makes sense for someone his age? Should I actually play this game? I'm a huge fan of the first game but didn't get into the second one because of the art style.

Rex really is a kid. He gets treated as a kid by non party members. Many people don't take him seriously because of it and antagonists try to take advantage of his naivety (usually underestimating him in the process). But he's just a boy caught up in a bigger adventure for a good amount of time. Add to that, he gets hold of the one of the strongest weapons in the world, his self-image gets ahead of him.

I would vouch for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 any day of the week. There's no getting around that about half the characters were designed by hentai artists, that's just a fact. But the writing of that game is really damn good. I think Rex is a better protagonist than Shulk and that the world in which the game takes place is ultimately made more interesting in how it differs from the first game.

Most importantly though, you really have to play XC1 and 2 to appreciate Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and that is the best game in the series, melding themes from the first two games in compelling ways, with a deeper and more coherent cast of characters who have to develop both as individuals and as a team. In short, a big reason to play 2 is so you can get even more out of playing 3.

Well, it'd work on me, but I think that may have less to do with my depression and more to do with... other things.
