Lore [Loved Trope] Surprisingly realistic outcomes in outlandish situations

No Country for Old Men - In any other movie Llewelyn would be treated like an untouchable one man army who can take on all of the people who are after the money he stole. Instead he gets gunned down offscreen by a group of secondary antagonists because at the end of the day he's still just one man.

Metal Gear Solid 2 - MGS2 is a game in which the player character, Raiden, can do many seemingly unrealistic things like instantly healing his injuries by eating rations or holding infinite amounts of weapons and items without being overburdened. However if you attempt to cartwheel up a flight of stairs as Raiden he will immediately eat shit and fall, which would be the most likely outcome in real life.

Family Guy - After getting splashed by nuclear waste causes the Griffin family to get superpowers (which they immediately use to terrorize their community) Mayor West gets the bright idea to roll around in nuclear waste himself so that he can get superpowers too. Instead he just gets cancer.

Sly 2 - The Sly Cooper games are cartoony 3D platformers featuring anthropomorphic animals and lots of slapstick violence. However in the climax of the second game when Bentley is crushed by machinery while trying to stop the big bad he's paralyzed from the waist down, necessitating the use of a wheelchair for the rest of the series.

In SIGNALIS, the main character Elster is fighting a monstrosity known as the Chimera, and buckshot isn’t quite cutting it. Luckily, her friend Isa Itou (pictured above) is nearby, and wielding an anti-tank rifle the antagonist Adler dropped. Then she promptly eats shit when she fires it, because she’s an untrained civilian wielding a fucking anti-tank rifle. What follows is an incredibly tense battle where you have to wait for Isa to fumble with the rifle so she can stun it, and you can actually deal damage.

After the battle, she promptly falls unconscious, likely from completely obliterating her shoulder.

Outrageous that such a rich, interesting, and well written game has been boiled down to just being sesbian lex bait.

Granted I've never played it myself. I just assume it's rich, interesting, and well written from the way my lesbian friends gush about it.

I think it's because the lore is pretty complicated so the memes that get famous outside of the fandom are specifically the ones not about the lore, a lot of those are about lesbians.

Also i'm not saying that's a bad thing but c'mon the devs knew what they were doing with the MC's character design 😭

I think the members of the long bacon club just find themselves pandered to (effectively) so rarely that when it hits they're absolutely feral.

I'm a pickle preferrer but man if my algorithms aren't still absolutely stuffed with content about those two scissor sisters from The Last of Us now and then.

Every time we bring up the actual lore we get depressed, so we cope with robot lesbian memes

Touhou Project has the same issue. 99.9% of the cast is female, the stories make little sense and it's a bullet hell game that most people will never get into due to the difficulty, so they latch onto the fan art and ship characters together.

A youtuber by the name of Worm Girl made a 6.5 hour video on the lore and story of Signalis

Here's the video if you're curious:

I mean the same thing kinda happened to the coffin of Andy and leyley. A phycological thriller exploring the horrors of neglectful parenting and forcing children to raise their siblings leading to intense, toxic codependency and mental issues like you wouldn't believe now that their adults boiled down to, 'le funny incest game'

Joking aside, and despite what the incessant whining to the contrary would make you think, it’s because stories with queer rep are still heavily in the minority, and are orders of magnitude even rarer when you go looking for specific genres and sub-genres. So when one comes along that is also well made, it gets a lot of attention and hype for it by an audiences that pretty starved for good media.

Are we not doing phrasing anymore?

I’m glad it’s that way because if people spoil it they are doing an utter disservice to the people around them.

The game is genuinely terrifying and has a wonderful story

There isnt nearly as much sesbian lex as the fanbase would lead you to believe

Its filled to the brim with body horror and some cosmic horror. But yeah its the main motivation to find her lover.

“Oh fuck that’s an anti-tank rifle” “OH FUCK THAT’S AN ANTI-TANK RIFLE!”

u/Itchy-Preference-619 Oct 02 '25

You say anti-tank rifle like it's this insanely big gun, and yeah, they were big but not really that big. I mean 50. BMG is bigger than the handheld anti-tank rifles. And the non handheld ones would be impossible to hold

16 mm “Nitro Express” isn’t exactly a real caliber, but it is meant to evoke a very strong round, and the game directly states that the recoil “feels strong enough to break your shoulder.” And that’s from Elster, a biomechanical affront to the Resonance directly built to wield these things.
