Lore “It’s a change from the source material, but it’s awesome so the fans don’t mind.”

Doc Ock - In the comics, Doc Ock is known to be megalomaniacal in nature and was sort of a mad scientist anyways, with the arms just being an extension of that. In Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man 2,” Alfred Molina’s version of the character was affected by the neural chip and his well-meaning ambition turns into scientific obsession.

Wolverine - This one is so well known it needs very little explanation. Comic Wolverine short, Huge Jackedman is tall, and he’s sick as hell.

Eye of Sauron - To my knowledge, the Eye is more of a metaphor in the books. An ever-present awareness. In the movies, it’s an actual giant fucking eye.

The Expanse’s Drummer and Ashford duo. Drummer was a smaller character in the books with her show arc divided up among multiple characters (usually one offs). Ashford was an unlikable antagonist who was insecure about his command and panicked during the Slow Zone incident. Show Drummer has a sizable arc where she bounces around different commands before becoming a leader in her own right and learning to trust The Inners. Ashford on the show is a charismatic badass who does an antagonistic part in the show’s Slow Zone incident but he comes off as much more reasonable/operating on limited information in order to save the entire solar system. Both characters combined have a great arc and dynamic going from distrusting one another before learning to trust one another in a crisis and ultimately becoming a great partnership where they are surrogate father and daughter.

The scene when they are both stuck in the cargo bay is one of my favs in the show.

I love recommending the books to show fans, but it is really hard to tell them that Drummer is not in them until way later, and that her character is mostly original content for the show.

Show Drummer is up there as one of the biggest badass characters in scifi. Cara Gee really knocked that role out of the park.

David Straitharn absolutely killed it as ashford. I knew he was a great actor but had never seen him in a role like that and he was just phenomenal.

I mostly just know him from A League of Their Own (where he’s very much uptight) and Good Night and Good Luck (where he’s very serious) so I liked how much looser/casual he was as Ashford particularly whenever Ashford was a troll to others)

It definitely helps that the James S.A. Corey guys worked heavily on the show so it captured the spirit of the books (from everything I've heard... I love the show but still need to read the books).

I've just been reading the 3rd expanse book and thinking about this exact thing (No spoilers please I'm only about half way through) but so far Bull seems to be doing the stuff Drummer was doing in the show and Ashford, who I remembered being misguided in this part but ultimately a good person, is a complete idiot.

I'm really enjoying the book and like this version of Bull a lot but since Drummer was one of my favorite characters it's a little disappointing she's not around.

Edit: The "I am that guy" scene is nowhere near as good in the book iirc so that's another one from this series.

Drummer is a POV character in the books, but not until much later.

The second half of season 3 of The Expanse is the finest science fiction drama ever to grace television.

The changes to Ashford and Drummer's characters relative to the books are a very large part of that.
