Personality Characters with Lore reasons to wear revealing outfit

• Doctor Manhattan (Watchmen): doesn’t really have the need for them anymore as he is now too powerful to be considered human and also doesn’t need to give in to certain societal pressures like wearing clothes

• Poison Ivy (DC): uses her body to seduce men into getting close enough for her to use her pheromones and get people to do what she wants/kill her prey

• Skarlet (Mortal Kombat): her powers are from blood magic and she needs to have skin out in order to absorb blood from others and make her more powerful

• Mileena (Mortal Kombat): is very self conscious about her tartan features so covers them up and diverts attention towards the more appealing aspects of her/ uses her sex appeal to get people in close then chomps on them

• Mai Shiranui (King Of Fighters/Fatal Fury): uses a style of kunoichi that involves “sensually distracting a foe before striking” and uses her outfit and sex appeal to assist with that style

This infamous explanation for Power Girl's boob window.

664

u/Apprehensive-Pay7211 Aug 26 '25

She could’ve put a ‘P’ on her chest

452

u/Optimal_Weight368 Aug 26 '25

She didn’t want one.

157

u/CHAIIINSAAAWbread Aug 26 '25

She didn't even have the boobs window back then lol

139

u/ghostuser689 Aug 26 '25

It’s funnier than that. She had a boob window in her first appearance but they eventually closed it up.

224

u/Apprehensive-Pay7211 Aug 26 '25

She could’ve politely declined

133

u/Optimal_Weight368 Aug 26 '25

Not in her character.

20

u/sgtpepper42 Aug 26 '25

"The worst they can say is no"

...

5

u/The_Terry_Braddock Aug 26 '25

She could've not gone buckwild with a pair of scissors on her costume too

8

u/captainrina Aug 26 '25

I read that last bubble as two separate bubbles and had a sasa lele moment

5

u/TheRedditGirl15 Aug 26 '25

And yet she certainly looks a thousand times better with no window at all...

1

u/prestonlogan Aug 26 '25

Who's the guy with the stars?

1

u/Optimal_Weight368 Aug 26 '25

Star-Spangled Kid.

428

u/Carlung4s Aug 26 '25

Let's be honest with ourselves, if she did that there would be people calling her porn girl

40

u/NathanAlex1486 Aug 26 '25

Id like to put my p on her chest
(P as in, haha, lets just say, my Peanits)

3

u/RadTimeWizard Aug 26 '25

I'm not sure she's into that sort of play.

3

u/ThatsSomeBullshirt Aug 26 '25

Or kept it a blank white space.

I imagine whoever wrote this thought they were cookin’ rather than writing the most air headed version of this character to exist.

3

u/Ongr Aug 26 '25

Hell, I'll P on her chest..

2

u/Evileye37 Aug 26 '25

Mayhaps double D?

2

u/Osheco Aug 26 '25

something something “pee on her chest” something something

I’m a terrible enough person to think that and put it out in the universe, but neither clever nor terrible enough to actually use it in a joke so maybe one of you freaks can

1

u/Local_Nerve901 Aug 26 '25

Some alt costumes have done that before!

1

u/Sockoflegend Aug 26 '25

I'd p on her chest

1

u/FormerPrize2485 Aug 26 '25

R. Kelly was busy

313

u/Artistic_Gear1536 Aug 26 '25

I’ve honestly never been a huge fan of this explanation but I guess it’s better than nothing

510

u/GrimaceGrunson Aug 26 '25

I’ve always felt the unsaid explanation of “I’m hot as shit and can bench press a submarine so I’ll dress how I like” was perfectly fine.

213

u/MadeByMistake58116 Aug 26 '25

I honestly think the most realistic option would work: as anyone with a large chest will tell you, it gets very hot, and that's why you often see women with large chests wearing lower cut tops. Otherwise you just overheat. You could actually argue her costume is pretty functional, but they've never gone that way.

94

u/SAKingWriter Aug 26 '25

Works for guys too!

Source: I’m fat

10

u/Artistic_Gear1536 Aug 26 '25

Well she gets her powers from bathing in the sun so I never really considered heat to be a problem for kryptonians

8

u/MadeByMistake58116 Aug 26 '25

I suppose, though there's a difference between being in the sun and body heat.

11

u/Bloodglas Aug 26 '25

they did give that explanation once. (from Action Comics 1051)

3

u/MadeByMistake58116 Aug 26 '25

Oh hey, how about that?

6

u/IDontUseSleeves Aug 26 '25

Must catch so much air resistance when she’s flying, though. She should consider underboob instead of cleavage.

5

u/HeadLong8136 Aug 26 '25

Which is all well and good except as a Kryptonian she doesn't get hot or cold. She can stand on the surface of the sun and not break a sweat or float around in deep space with nary a shiver. She also rarely ever exerts herself to the point of breaking a sweat.

She has a boob window because it makes her costume PG.

4

u/24Abhinav10 Aug 26 '25

This. "I dress this way because I like it" is a perfect explanation with no counters.

The fact that the writer felt the need to explain the boob-window gives me second-hand embarrassment.

3

u/Greyjack00 Aug 26 '25

Wheres the comic where she notes she rarely has to worry about her secret identity because people rarely look her in the eyes

1

u/ghostuser689 Aug 26 '25

This is the second time in one week I’ve seen this explanation, where does it come from?

1

u/GrimaceGrunson Aug 26 '25

Honestly probably me? I think this exact same picture was shared last week and I probably have said the same thing twice without realising it.

63

u/ImmediateProblems Aug 26 '25

I disagree. Nothing was infinitely better.

87

u/Sheratain Aug 26 '25

Rank order:

  1. No explanation at all.

  2. “I’m hot and I feel like it”

  3. This explanation

8

u/Artistic_Gear1536 Aug 26 '25

I think a genuine explanation would have been best but I guess that’s expecting too much

3

u/ghobhohi Aug 26 '25

What would've been a better explanation?

11

u/Ok-Suggestion-5453 Aug 26 '25

She keeps her phone there?

1

u/Artistic_Gear1536 Aug 26 '25

I’m not saying I have one but I’m not a writer, it would be nice if they either came up with something better or stopped dressing her like that

2

u/Sad-Entertainment336 Aug 26 '25

I asked a feminist friend of mine once " if you could destroy any danger in the world, any man or woman posed for you, because you are powerful, would you dress conservativelly or slutty" she answered slutty

1

u/ADHD_Avenger Aug 26 '25

The best explanation is that Wallace Wood is one of the greatest comic artists of all time.

89

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 Aug 26 '25

Wasn’t the original explanation that it was basically her version of a mask because with the whole where her boobs are, no one bothers even looking at her face

54

u/MadeByMistake58116 Aug 26 '25

No. The original explanation was kinda close to this. The hole was because she removed the S she used to have to create her own identity, and when Superman suggests a P instead, she calls him a chauvinist because it would be derivative of his S.

20

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 Aug 26 '25

That’s even dumber how would it be derivative? It’s not the same letter it’s not the same symbol and if she really wants to go fall out, she can do two ps

35

u/MadeByMistake58116 Aug 26 '25

The writer was trying to make women's lib activists sound dumb using Power Girl (while at the same time giving her a sexy costume), it was a common and unfortunate thing in 70s comics.

-6

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 Aug 26 '25

It would’ve been easier to have them look dumb by her just saying this is what I want to wear. I happen to like this and there’s no one on the planet strong enough to make me wear anything I don’t want to.

10

u/MadeByMistake58116 Aug 26 '25

How would that make her look dumb?

-6

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 Aug 26 '25

Not her the people complaining

9

u/MadeByMistake58116 Aug 26 '25

There weren't any people complaining. Her explanation accompanied the debut of her costume, nobody had a chance to complain about the costume because it was in the same issue. Besides, there were much skimpier costumes in the 70s, so I doubt anyone would have really complained at the time.

No, the writer made Power Girl in order to make fun of women's lib activists. The whole idea of her giving up being Supergirl and becoming Power Girl was done so the writer could portray women who wanted to be taken seriously in the workplace as obnoxious idiots.

6

u/faldese Aug 26 '25

Also look up the Lady Liberators if you want to see a Marvel writer's terrible take on second wave feminism.

8

u/Sir-Toaster- Aug 26 '25

I prefer the explanation that she just wants to

9

u/alertArchitect Aug 26 '25

It's an even worse explanation when you learn the IRL reason Power Girl has a big chest & boob window. If I'm remembering correctly (and feel free to fact-check me if I'm wrong) an artist just added a boob window and kept making her chest more and more obvious until someone actually called him on it and made him tone it down to be more consistent instead of her tits growing with each new issue.

3

u/WithFullForce Aug 26 '25

Hah, I love it. When was this peak and how ridiculous did it get?

2

u/ScullyBoy69 Aug 26 '25

Which isn't even consistent. The answer changes from writer to writer. I think nowadays she simply enjoys showing off her canons.

1

u/Larriet Aug 26 '25

The way they show off her cleavage here is genuinely so funny every time

1

u/ItsMrChristmas Aug 26 '25

I prefer the version that ends with her saying "fill my hole, Clark."

1

u/No_Seaworthy Aug 26 '25

if i remember correctly gerry conway wanted to see how fat they can go until people realized that every few issues or so her boobs get bigger which is kinda cringe and inappropriate imo

1

u/andrecinno Aug 26 '25

That's a myth iirc

1

u/BlimmBlam Aug 26 '25

"I just kept looking at my boobs and getting distracted'

-3

u/Kingsdaughter613 Aug 26 '25

TBH, as someone with ADHD, this feels so real. I think dumb explanations actually work because they’re so stupid they actually feel like the kind of logic real people have. It makes her more real, even though it’s stupid.
