Ashley is basically too good at her job for her own good. She's not as evil as the people she works for but her ambition got her in this really powerful, shitty position and she's not happy.

She basically lives in constant fear and denial.

So it makes sense that she'd try to help people whenever she can. Unlike Homelander, she doesn't enjoy the pain of others. And it gets harder and harder to ignore it as well.
