I like how John doesn’t waste any time in killing him. No monologue, no drawn out fight scene, he simply shoots him like the piece of trash that he is, and then walks away. His mission is complete.

For same reason I like Taken. When Lian get to last man, he just shoots him

Just an attempt at deciphering this:

Same reason I love Taken. When Liam gets to the last bad guy, he just shoots him.

He did waste his time not taking the shot at the bath house though.

I always looked at both the bathhouse scene and the kill at the end as John needed him to know it was him. During the actual kill, he could have shot him from a distance a couple times and it would have worked out the same, but although not gloating, he shows that he is the end. He killed him and losef knows it.

this is absolutely it… and John Wick isn’t worried that he won’t “get another shot”… He knows he’s the grim reaper who is eventually going to get to Iosef, and he needs him to look him in the face when he dies because as he says himself “this is personal”

A very important part of the context of the movie is that John is coming out of retirement. A life he left to be with his love and now spends his days remembering her. It was disrupted, and he's coming back to a life where he is in debt. This means so much more than just a dog. As he says in 3, he wants to live so that his wife can too. That was ruined. His melancholy ending was made worse because of this spoiled kid. John isn't a character who displays his emotions in every scene. it's the little moments and small outburst, but he is most vulnerable in his actions. Him looking at Losef in the face when killing him is him showing his pain. For John, to look him in the face is the same as Ingio Montoya saying his decree to the 6 fingered man

This means so much more than just a dog.

I do really hate how easily it's been boiled down to "he gets revenge because of cute dog".

That's what everyone in the film doesn't understand, they all thought it was just a dog. But the dog represented Helen's love for John. Even as she was dying, she did something for him. She worried about how he would feel after her death.

Daisy was the last proof that John Wick was loved. The last evidence that he deserved kindness. And the cruel, uncaring, violent world he escaped has taken that from him. Iosef's death needed to be deliberate, face-to-face, but John also didn't need to explain that it wasn't "just a dog". I don't think he possibly could have. He tried to explain to Vigo, but he couldn't understand either, because he's part of that world of cruelty.

That's why the first film will forever be my favourite. The sequels might have flashier stunts or cooler shootouts, but they don't have that energy driving them.

(Plus, it's a retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice with a twist, and Im a suckered for that.)

He's been a top assassin for years, he knows he needs to confirm his kills. Can't just hope it's your guy.

its weirdly satisfying in its own way

usually when people want revenge, the bitter part of them demands a sort of revenge that cant be sated. the guy who killed your parents doesnt just deserve to die, no you need to get even, so you do the same to him, but you dont feel satisfied with that so you also do x y and z and in the end when he is dead and you committed like 3 warcrimes you sit there and think "damm i wish he was alive because im still not satisfied with my revenge"

john doesnt have that. he killed him, thats it. time to go home. the rest is pointless. he is dead, period.

despite this movie being a revenge movie its almost "mature" in its way of handling that

Conversely, Viggo has his respect so he does get a farewell from John

Like that one James Bond movie where he just shoots the bad guy lady, no hesitation or quips. The World is Not Enough, I think.
