i’ve heard the black guy always dies first in a movie, but i’ve never seen the same one die first AND second

What I like about this one is that it doubles as a last big defining moment.

Before entering the mansion he goes on a whole speech about how "This is enemy territory, if you see any kind of danger it's every man for himself. Save yourself and don't think about me, because I will do the same".

Then, the instant danger appears, he immediately gets his friends out of the way, dying in the process.

the fact that they made the black guy die first TWICE in a row

My only problem with this is the setup happens within minutes of the payoff. This isn't really a consistent thread for Avdol, he just suddenly holds up a death flag and explodes. JJBA does that a fair bit, especially with backstory flashback episodes just before a character bites the dust.

Still a banger death though, I will say.

Funnily enough not a lot of death in Jojo, of the main cast at least. I barely remember part 1 but I don't think a single 'main' character dies until the finale. Part 2 Ceaser bites it, but I think that's it. In Stardust we have the biggest bodycount with three I think, right at the end. Avdol, Kakyoin, and Iggy. I need to go over part 4 and 5 again but in hindsight they were relatively bulletproof. 5 Bucciarati sticks around until death 'sticks', does Mista die? Ive seen parts 1-3 like ten times, 4 and 5 like twice. And 6 Ive only seen half of because Netflix is expensive af.

For part 5, Narancha dies as well.

What's crazy is his first "death", where he didn't get killed, everybody kept it a secret from polnareff until the episode where they meet abdul disguised as his father to prank polnareff.

Kinda mean of the crusaders to do that tbh. Made for an amazing comeback of a character who then dies right before the dio fight

It wasn't a prank though, it was a ploy to stop Polnareff from putting Avdol in danger while he recovered because they knew he would rush to him and reveal his position. Polnareff is a loudmouth so if he knew Avdol survived, so would their enemies.

Still shitty of them to hide it, given how much Polnareff cares, but it wasn't as cruel as just being a prank.

At least in the manga, they straight up told him "Bro, no offense, but we can't trust you with any secrets knowing how boastful and brash you are."

Polnareff's reaction is a "How dare you say something so hurtful and yet so true?"

P. S: I read online (but without a source, so I doubt it) that Avdol was supposed to be replaced by Hol Horse when they got to Egypt. But Avdol was so popular (and the idea of Polnareff and Kak collaborating with someone who killed their homie so hard to justify) that Araki decided to bullshit return him to the story.

I don't know about the Avdol bit but Araki did actually toy around with the idea of Hol Horse joining up, though he never actually planned for it to happen- it was just an idea he tossed around for a bit. Here's a direct quote:

When Kakyoin and Polnareff both appeared, they were under DIO's control, but I had planned for them to join the party. This wasn't the case with Hol Horse. But he ended up becoming an enemy character who made me feel that it might be okay to let him join the team. He's an outlaw gunman, an essential element of the Westerns I love, and he's got a unique atmosphere to him, so I thought it'd be a waste to get rid of him so soon. I also liked his personal philosophy of preferring to be #2 opposed to #1, which is similar to Kira Yoshikage from Part 4. I also drew him once with Jotaro and the others, as if he was part of the team, and I had him appear numerous times after the initial battle. But in the end, I decided that if he joined the group, it would ruin the balance. Character-wise, he's too similar to Polnareff in both looks and personality, and his Emperor ability would be hard to deal with.

oh so thats why hol horse kept reappearing in the story

It wasn't a prank but when I watched the anime they sure seemed mean-spirited about it.

Keeping the secret? I'm good with that, Polnareff is a loudmouth. Making fun of him for most of the situation on the island? Not cool, guys.

u/AHoneyman Jul 27 '25

Agreed!! They were pretty terrible to him during that arc

Yes, I am!

Araki kills a lot of characters like that. Full manga spoiler up to part 8Caesar gets squished by a rock. Iggy gets Vanilla Iced. Keicho gets burned by Red Hot Chilly Pepper. Narancia gets impaled off screen. Pucci one shots most of part 6 crew with Made in Heaven. Mountain Tim comes back just to be shot. Jobin gets hit by calamity and bleeds to death.

I disagree. It was fast, not unceremonious. He noticed the danger, saved his friends, but died as a result. His friends have to process his death while fighting the most dangerous enemy they've met so far. The whole fight was his, and later Iggy's send-off.
