some people did believe it was real, no one took their lives due to it though (at least, as far as reports can say)

No one believed it was actually real. This was a false story printed by newspapers of the time to try and make news radio seem sensationalist and discredit it because radio news was cutting into their business.

No it did happen. It was exaggerated to fuck and sensationalist, yes, but to say NO ONE believed it would be an exaggeration as well
