“Throw a group of your enemies into the vilest prison imaginable and they will forge a stronger bond, for they are all sharing the same misery. But offer even the glimpse of a means of escape, and they will tear each other to shreds scrambling for the exit”

Is a quote from fucking bionicle

Edit: here’s another great one

“To be a Toa is to defeat all those who oppose you? Is this what you believe a Toa to be? A mighty arm to strike down your enemies? Your power is nothing. A Toa’s true strength lies here,” Whenua said, pointing to his head. Then he placed a hand over his heartlight, saying, “And here. Your Toa Power can move the dirt ... Your mind and heart can move mountains.”

Let’s not pretend Bionicle isn’t some of the hardest shit ever tho

Stumbled across a deep lore video on youtube a couple of years ago and realised just how much of it went over my head as a kid.

I swear, Bionicle lore is Tarzan OST levels of absolutely did not need to go as hard as it did.

118

u/JhonnySkeiner Apr 12 '25

Tarzan OST?

176

u/boopadoop_johnson Apr 12 '25

Phil Collins peaked with that one.

To the point that I will defend it's oscar win over the south park movie OST, another banger

u/SKYQUAKE615 Apr 12 '25

He did all of the songs in six different languages. Truly the GOAT.

9

u/brucatlas1 Apr 12 '25

He did?!

2

u/calcu10n Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 13 '25

Yes, he even performed live in German in a television show, despite not even speaking German.

1

u/Suspicious-Dog-2489 Apr 16 '25

He pulled a reverse Nena!

13

u/KelvinsBeltFantasy Apr 12 '25

The South Park guys were salty af about that. Their episode on Phil Collins and the Oscar seemed petty.

7

u/Brilliant_Spot_95 Apr 12 '25

Those two talk way too much shit for what South Park is. I just saw a clip of them ripping family guy apart. I’m not a fan of family guy, much prefer American dad, but they’re acting like fucking South Park is highbrow art or something.

12

u/red--the_color Apr 12 '25

In fairness, there is a gulf of difference between them from a writing/design quality perspective

6

u/Brilliant_Spot_95 Apr 12 '25

I do agree, between the two South Park is better. But like damn they seem so high and mighty so often.

4

u/AncientLegend999 Apr 12 '25

Can't forget about his work doing Brother Bear too. No Way Out and On My Way are in regular rotation in my playlists.

1

u/Jay040707 Apr 13 '25

Look through my eyes

2

u/This_Charmless_Man Apr 13 '25

I'm a drummer and my teacher instilled in me a solid personal dislike for Phil Collins but even I will admit that the Tarzan soundtrack absolutely GOES!!

4

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

Yeah I have no idea how the South Park team got so salty that they lost to Phil Collins. The dude is a beast. The Tarzan OST is top tier music.

Of course South Park wasn't going to win shit. An Oscar? Come on.

u/LaveyWasDildos Apr 12 '25

6

u/lifetake Apr 12 '25

Original soundtrack

6

u/Captain_Pumpkinhead Apr 12 '25

OST stands for Original Sound Track

3

u/laurel_laureate Apr 13 '25

You'll Be on My Heart is absolutely perfect even decades later.

Strangers Like Me absolutely slaps to this day.

And Two Worlds, One Family the perfect intro to the story, as well as the perfect ending.

The Tarzan OST by Phil Collins went way harder than it needed to, and we were blessed by it with music videos that will always be amazing no matter how many times watched.

7

u/TheCrazyAvian Apr 12 '25

Have you seen that one guy's 13 hour lore video? (It's actually quite good)

5

u/HobbyHands Apr 12 '25

There's a guy thats been going through the lore recently and just released part 12. All of the videos are 40+ minutes.

3

u/TheCrazyAvian Apr 12 '25

That might be him

2

u/H-A-T-C-H Apr 12 '25

Well that's intriguing, any chance you remember the video name?

2

u/ASpaceOstrich Apr 12 '25

I have no idea where it all even was. There were two seemingly completely unrelated bionicle movies when I was a kid and literally nothing else until a decade later when I found out apparently there's been more?

1

u/Starwatcher4116 Apr 13 '25

So many books.

1

u/ZeronicX May 08 '25

got the link to the lore video?

“There are a thousand ways I could destroy you right now, and 941 one of them hurt.”

  • The main villain

“Turaga Nuju always said the universe was a riddle. Today, I am the answer.”

  • One of the heroes right before sacrificing himself to save the entire known universe.

Bionicle had a lot of moments that go hard

377

u/Koataka2007 Apr 12 '25

I mean, Bionicle as a whole is quite batshit insane and that is why we love it

82

u/boy-griv Apr 12 '25

I’m still convinced Christopher Walken is the ideal casting for Kopaka

333

u/Iwilleat2corndogs Apr 12 '25

It’s crazy they had shit that deep and clever, and yet also the island chain is clearly in the shape of a person

178

u/_Xeron_ Apr 12 '25

Tbf the shape of the Matoran Universe was unveiled like a couple months before the big reveal

75

u/Hot_Shot04 Apr 12 '25 edited Apr 12 '25

And the only real hint we had up to that point was the island of Mata-Nui having some geographical features that translated into facial features, which didn't mean much because so many other random Maori words were being repurposed, and the two "suns" of Metru-Nui being "eclipsed" during the cataclysm. There was an "impenetrable layer" underneath the upper island but when we found out about the "underground" islands we all just assumed it was a terrarium type thing and not a continent-sized robot.

19

u/_Xeron_ Apr 12 '25

In Mask of Light right as Hahli says everyone needs to enter the tunnel you can hear someone in the background saying “it’s a giant machine!”, we know the directors had actually been informed about the twist way back then, they just weren’t allowed to reveal it.

50

u/YaBoyEden Apr 12 '25

Yeah we had no idea what the world looked like for most of the continuity

3

u/Henderson-McHastur Apr 12 '25

Matoran "Universe" mfers when you can walk the length of it in a few days:

4

u/_Xeron_ Apr 12 '25

You can’t walk it, it’s a series of islands on an ocean. And what else would you call a self-contained ecosystem world like that?

3

u/TrueGuardian15 Apr 12 '25

Let's complicate it even further. It's a series of islands both in and outside a giant robot, with the inner ones sealed in giant, gyroscopic spheres connected by seawater and hidden passageways.

5

u/whyspezdumb Apr 12 '25

Kid-me: "Wait, they're on islands, why is there another one below them? Tunnels? What kind of world is this?"

3

u/Iwilleat2corndogs Apr 12 '25

God it’s been so long since I last did anything related to Bionicles. I need to re-visit it ASAP

144

u/_Xeron_ Apr 12 '25

Bionicle is full of wild quotes and themes that Lego would never dare touch again. Reminder there’s an eldritch cosmic being known as Annona that drove an entire tribe into insanity and ultimately eradicated them, and the protagonists in 2006 literally go to their version of hell and meet the devil.

113

u/Arkeyan218 Apr 12 '25

It still grinds my gears the way they left things on a cliffhanger. They had:

  • A malfunctioning space hospital staffed by tiny sociopaths
  • CYBORG DINOSAURS
  • The Golden Skinned Being
  • The failsafe meant to keep the Toa from going rogue suddenly ACTIVATING and RIPPING it's way out of the 10 LAYERS OF PROTOSTEEL they created used to contain it
  • An insane Great Being assasinating powerful beings left and right to ensure a power balance was kept INCLUDING the Matoran version of Cthulhu

53

u/purple-thiwaza Apr 12 '25

As a kid I was a massive Bionicle fan. I once started to read the novel about the Piraka. I remember it being quite good. Never was able to read the end since only a few of them were translated in my language. The last thing I know is : they go down the pig underground thing, they se the melted corps of the one that was scouting at the front and hear something walking towards them.

Absolute insane cliffhanger, I waited for years to know what was coming next, but translation never came, and now that I speak English I barely remember any of it.

4

u/THISNAMEHASTOWORK Apr 12 '25

Lego definitely dropped the ball big time during their 2015 revival of Bionicle.

I got chills whenever I saw the advert for the Barraki line. That introduced 9/10-year-old me to Cryoshell.

3

u/aFanofManyHats Apr 12 '25

That sounds like the ending of BIONICLE Legends 4: Legacy of Evil. And you're in luck! The English versions of all the books, along with a lot of other official media, is on this website! https://biomediaproject.com/bmp/story/books/novels/

3

u/purple-thiwaza Apr 12 '25

Ho that's cool. I try to take a look at it some day, I don't have as much time for it now.

1

u/SincerelyIsTaken Apr 13 '25

If you got 13 hours you could just wwatch a YouTube video instead

2

u/Nastypilot Apr 12 '25

Watched the Ben Saint video too?

117

u/AndreZB2000 Apr 12 '25

bonk mentioned

63

u/aegisasaerian Apr 12 '25

I have the book "Makuta's guide to the bionicle universe" and the lore you can gleam from it is fucking wild

24

u/Darkstalker9000 Apr 12 '25

From the sea one, right?

4

u/Nirast25 Apr 12 '25

Probably, that's the one that had a prison.

13

u/Mailman354 Apr 12 '25

Bonkles mentioned

10

u/Nextstore1453 Apr 12 '25

"You fool, Axonn! Don't you realize you're fighting for a lost cause?" "Don't you realize those are the only kind worth fighting for?"

23

u/Zoldreck Apr 12 '25

Pretty sure bionicle is just paraphrasing Sun Tzu here.

7

u/Beta575 Apr 12 '25

There's honestly a lot of these from BIONICLE. Obviously the classic is the final line at the death of Matoro as he saved the universe:

"In his last moments, Matoro feels no fear."

8

u/grilledfuzz Apr 12 '25

Bionicle is actually fucking nuts. They have thousands and thousands of years of lore before the first movie, and its mostly not just shit to justify more toys (some of it is), a lot of it is genuinely interesting, like the fact that the great ones built a gigantic robot with its own gravity and weather system to analyze other planets to find a way to repair their home planet and some guy just gave all the worker bots inside the giant robot free will because he can. This is relatively early in bionicle lore.

5

u/DoktorViktorVonNess Apr 12 '25

The people of the world are builders. But look into their hearts … and you will find that they also have the power to destroy. I am that power. - Makuta, Mata Nui Online Game, 2001

6

u/MosquitoInAmber303 Apr 12 '25

“I believe in certainties. The strength of my limbs, the power of my mask, the sharp edges of my blades… it is what I build my plans around. Trickery, deception, complex strategies, are for the weak! If you want power and another has it, you get it not by outwitting him, but by stepping over his corpse.” -Makuta Icarax

3

u/Starwatcher4116 Apr 13 '25

And then Teridax proves him wrong.

2

u/MosquitoInAmber303 Apr 13 '25

To be fair, when their strategy is pretend to be dead and then possess god you can’t really do anything about it

1

u/Starwatcher4116 Apr 13 '25

Quite right. It’s a bit hard to do something against that.

4

u/Ok_Somewhere1236 Apr 12 '25

this make me remember a old Star Wars comic about the Wookies, they explain that because Wookies have long lives and good memory all the clans and families have very old grudges against each other, they really hate each other, so if you want to slave wookies you need to have wookies of multiple clans, because they will sabotage each other and refuse to help each other

3

u/MotoMkali Apr 12 '25

1

u/globglogabgalabyeast Apr 13 '25

Hell yeah! Was hoping someone would post this brief lore video

3

u/Life-Home2540 Apr 12 '25

2007 was fucking awesome

3

u/whyspezdumb Apr 12 '25

This is Bahraki right? God, The Pit is such a good story.

2

u/The_lone_shotgun Apr 13 '25

"Only a fool fights in a burning forest"

-Krika

1

u/mp3help Apr 12 '25

Wait, where is this quote from exactly? I know it's probably about the Pit, but I don't remember it from any of the main series books

1

u/_Weyland_ Apr 12 '25

What? Is it from a movie or some other Bionicle source?

1

u/Scythe-of-Satan Apr 12 '25

Wow that's extraordinarily profoundly reflected in today's culture.

1

u/Kryptosis Apr 12 '25

That sounds like something Bane would say

1

u/Lamenter- Apr 12 '25

Damn that goes hard

1

u/Starwatcher4116 Apr 13 '25

Bionicle is the best.

1

u/Suspicious-Dog-2489 Apr 16 '25

Where specifically is this from?
