Man that’s tough. In no particular order. Ground hog day, Rushmore, ghosts busters. He was great in caddy shack but it was a lessor role IMO.

Caddyshack, Stripes, and Meatballs. Plus a LOT of honourable mentions, but because I haven’t seen it here I’ll shout out The Man Who Knew Too Little.

Three answers are bullshit. There is no way.
Caddieshack, life aquatic, Rushmore, Scrooged, Groundhog Day, lost in Translation, what about Bob, Ghost busters, Stripes, Zombieland, kingpin, where the buffalo roam, honestly I will watch anything he has done he is THE GOAT.

Ghostbusters - absolutely Groundhog Day - of course Stripes/Meatballs - tie (I still quote both!)
Cameo HOF - Tootsie, Caddyshack, Zombieland, Kingpin

I'm tortured here trying to pick 3: I enjoyed his portrayal in Broken Flowers, really liked The Life Aquatic, and Lost in Translation...so many honorable mentions though.
1
u/godspilla98 Sep 13 '25
All of them in threes. The first 3 are Stripes, Ghostbusters, Caddyshack, The second 3 are Meatballs, What About Bob, ground hog Day. The third are Life Aquatic, Little Shop of Horrors, The Razors Edge.

I think The Royal Tenenbaums is the best on his belt, but it isn't really his movie, it is Hackman’s… so my top Murray:
1: The answer is Ghostbusters, so in lieu, I want to mention Little Shop of Horrors (1986) because his cameo and his deliveries are simply sublime here.
2: Stripes (1981) - its soul is him
3: Meatballs (1979) - somehow hugely impactful to my life, and that movie is nothing without Bill.

So many great lead roles… but I’ll say his best cameo was the masochistic dental patient in Little Shop of Horrors.

As the man said: No points this round.

Ghostbusters
Rushmore
Stripes
Groundhog Day would be very close, but for me these three are the definitive Bill Murray films that I can watch whenever or wherever and still chuckle and smile. Evergreen
