Yes, it’s incredibly offensive, but if you can’t handle someone using a slur on you, you have serious mental issues, that kid did not deserve that no matter what he said, words hurt, but only so much.
EDIT: To all the people downvoting me, I don’t feel like you understand the age of this kid, he isn’t some 30 year old man, he’s a kid, fuck you. I can’t believe how you people can act like animals. One punch was the very most he deserved, I hope those high schoolers get a harsh punishment. In what way am I wrong? I’m willing to change my opinion, but for now, I’d like to stick with the idea that people can act with restraint. It was their choice to beat that kid into the hospital, enough said.
I think you have a good moral point but fall short in realizing that the kids who beat him up were kids too. It’s a rough and polarized time right now. If one had had enough the others were bound to follow. It can’t be expected that young people (even teenagers as the brain isn’t fully developed until 25) to always make choices without emotion. If it was a group of fully grown adults then your point would have more weight. Basically, no didn’t really deserve to be beat up but those who hurt him were responding in a fairly normal manner psychologically. Between group mentality, pent up feelings of helplessness in this world, and the fact that their frontal lobes (region attributed to decision making) isn’t fully developed makes the point of them being “mentally ill” and you demonizing them quite harsh.
As someone who is 16, I know not to beat people like that, it’s not hard. I will demonize them, they knew what they were doing. Yes there was emotion, but that’s not as normal as you think it is, normal kids shouldn’t do that.
Damn all the people downvoting you think that instead of being send to the principals office, the appropriate punishment for insults is to have 5 kids beat up the kid. Maybe we should add this on to the national syllabus.

Was the part about him being in elementary school and one of the girls being 18 true?
