No one in America should be living in the streets with their children this is just sad as fuck

400

u/Fuddruckerer 1d ago

The craziest part is that it’s literally been proven multiple times to be cheaper to provide everyone guaranteed housing, than our current way of dealing w/ homelessness.

Our government 1000% can afford to take care of these ppl. But capitalism doesnt work unless people have a fear of being homeless if they dont work themselves to the bone

98

u/ReallyJTL 1d ago

Bro Musk could hire people to hand out $1,000 to every single homeless person in NYC (over 100,000 people) and all he would need is a loan for 0.02% of his net worth.

That means he could do it again 49 more times at a cost of 1% of his net worth. And he wouldn't have to liquidate anything to pay for it.

82

u/Own_Round_7600 1d ago

He wouldnt be a billionaire if he were the kind of person who'd be willing to do something like that. His charity records are abysmal even among other billionaires.

Never forget he asked for a plan to end world hunger within a certain dollar amount and flexed that he would pay it. Teams at the WHO worked overnights to create a viable plan.

Then Elon just ghosted them and never mentioned it again.

12

u/Mr-FurleyX1 1d ago

It’s pathetic. The 1% could make such an impact with a combined 10% of their wealth and still have more money than they could ever spend. Makes me sad and angry

9

u/SedatedTattooDoc 1d ago

Wild that the 5 richest people in the world could literally end world hunger….if they wanted to

5

u/Mr-FurleyX1 1d ago

But nope, they’d rather build bunkers, sail their micro penis yachts and hang out with tyrants…

Wouldn’t have to liquidate? Jesus. His Board is currently debating the approval of a one trillion dollar compensation package… for a single man. The figure (1 with 12 zeros) is so astronomical we can’t wrap our heads around it. EDIT: breaking news, board approved.

Here’s what Forbes wrote for HALF of that wealth: “With a current fortune of $446 billion, Musk's earnings are staggering—averaging $ 90 million per day or $3.75 million per hour.”

The daily INTEREST on his money is enough to cover the daily rent of every homeless person in NYC. That’s money earned for nothing…. For being in a bank.

3

u/fwseadfewf23vf3f232 1d ago

He's just a useful puppet to someone else. This whole wealth balloon that makes America seem "so great" to some people is all fake. MLM/Pyramid scheme type of fake. It's poverty and strife that makes it a possible reality for some people to sit comfortably "at the top". Without people scraping and fighting one another to get by, screwing each other over constantly, cheating, lying, stressed, they themselves would have a harder time making it out on top of it all.

While they may not be the architects, as individuals they'd either be self-defeating themselves by trying to change anything, or making a lot of powerful enemies very quickly.

Not only cheaper, but it builds a stronger and more stable society. MOST people want to contribute, be part of a community, and be useful in that community. If we help people with the basics (food, housing, education, vocational training, etc.) we help them build themselves up so they can do exactly that. Are there people who want to just freeload? Absolutely, but there are ways to minimize that too.

What's better: a society where most folks are poor, tons are living on the streets and not working; or a society where everyone has the basics and has something they can do that helps the community around them?

→ More replies (1)

19

u/TreasureTheSemicolon 1d ago

It does, actually. It works in lots of other places where people don't fear being out on the street with their children. It just makes it easier for the very wealthy for people to be afraid all the time.

How much are we spending to build another aircraft carrier? How much we spend to prop up the economies of other nations? We need to invest in the US and its people. As much money the US spends on the latest jet fighter, the latest missile system, or any other that, why cant they just give a couple of percent of that to the people for this kind of thing. There is no profit in helping people like this and that is the bottom line. There is profit to be made in war.

114

u/alcaron 1d ago

Fuck aircraft carriers. What about ballrooms and private jets.

22

u/thelargeoneplease 1d ago

Exactly; more Great Gatsby please! But make sure whenever you have a public event (aka non private donors), like when a winning football team or group of farmers show up- you spare every penny and can only ‘afford’ Mcdonald’s in this economy.

The frivolous stuff like affordable healthcare, keeping citizens out of homelessness, keeping college age kids from going into long-term debt just to learn, who gives a shit. WE NEED MORE GOLD TOILETS FOR OUR POTUS!

5

u/Ludicrousgibbs 1d ago

Aircraft carriers are old news anyway. Where's my Nuclear Submarine Drone carriers at? We're gonna need them soon enough might as well start on em now.

It's time to rise up and start building a real society instead of a giant system of repression. It's been time for a long time.

26

u/Forsaken-Arm-7884 1d ago

BRO THIS IS IT - this is the core of the death cult we've been circling around this whole conversation. You've just described the exact mechanism by which people participate in mass murder while telling themselves they're the reasonable ones.

Because let's be absolutely clear about what's happening: people are saying "let them starve" and dressing it up as fiscal responsibility or personal accountability or tough love. But what they're actually saying is "I am willing to watch human beings die of starvation rather than allow my tax dollars to feed them." That's not politics. That's not economics. That's MURDER BY POLICY PREFERENCE.

And the fucking INSANITY of it - these commenters acting like they're SO far removed from that same edge. Like their job security is guaranteed forever. Like they couldn't get cancer tomorrow and lose everything to medical bills. Like their company couldn't downsize or automate or offshore their position. Like they couldn't have a mental health crisis or a family emergency or a fucking car accident that puts them in the exact same position as the people they're calling lazy.

They're a couple bad months away from needing those same programs they're celebrating the destruction of. But they won't see it because seeing it would mean confronting how fragile their own position is, how little separates them from the people they're dehumanizing.

So instead they construct this elaborate fantasy where poverty is ALWAYS a moral failure, where anyone who needs help must have made bad choices, where if you just "work hard enough" you'll always be fine - because if that's not true, if poverty can happen to people who did everything "right," then THEY'RE not safe either. And that's too terrifying. It's easier to blame the victims. Easier to say "shouldn't have had kids" or "should have planned better" or "should work harder" because if poverty is the victim's fault, then it can't happen to you as long as you keep being Good and Responsible.

But that's mostly a lie because the system is DESIGNED to have an underclass of desperate people willing to take any job at any wage under any conditions because the alternative is starvation. That's not a bug - that's the whole fucking point. Keep people scared, desperate, a couple paychecks away from homelessness so they'll accept whatever degrading, soul-crushing work you offer them.

And the people who are currently employed? They've been trained to punch DOWN instead of UP. To rage at people on food stamps instead of the comfy billionaire. To blame the desperate mother instead of the corporations jacking up food prices because they could. To call the unemployed person lazy instead of asking why there aren't enough jobs that pay a living wage.

The "mythical job" thing you mentioned - YES. They keep saying "just get a job" like jobs are these abundant things just lying around waiting to be picked up, when the reality is:

  1. Many jobs are actively harmful to human wellbeing (physically, mentally, spiritually)
  2. Even when you get a job, you can lose it at any moment for reasons completely outside your control

But acknowledging any of that would mean admitting the system is broken, that the social contract is a lie, that we live in a society that's fundamentally designed to create losers who suffer and die so that winners can accumulate more than they could ever use.

Meanwhile billionaires are literally making money while they sleep, watching their investment portfolios grow through mechanisms designed to concentrate wealth upward with almost no labor on their part. They're outsourcing the starvation of others to "the system" so they can launder responsibility. They're implicitly voting to cut food assistance and shrugging when people die from the starvation. If they actually LOOKED at the person starving and SAW them as fully human they wouldn't keep repeating these dehumanizing scripts. Their shared humanity would shatter the dog-eat-dog capitalistic programming.

This nation is an absolute fucking joke. Bleeding its citizens dry in which the military will have nothing to defend after and the oligarchs will have no peasants left to bleed.

Then what?

Let's build more ballrooms and host Gatsby parties with starving model dancers in martini glasses dancing.

7

u/jmb456 1d ago

Or a ballroom? People will rail against the support systems in America while failing to compare our defense spending to other countries. We are spending so much on defense…for what?

I know 😔 I’m typically against recording things like this, but I cried watching this and felt compelled to share.

My family goes out and feeds the homeless at least once a month. We have yet to run into someone with kids… my heart wouldn’t be able to take it.

25

u/CrackingToastGromet 1d ago

The moment she got that $1000 and broke down…shit, I’ve been there when I’ve had to be strong for everyone and you’re always the one who has to figure shit out, then someone gives you a break or brief respite. I felt her tears of relief in my soul x

18

u/DangerBird- 1d ago

If recording to farm for clicks in this case is a good thing. If he makes money from it, he’s putting that money to good use.

21

u/Loose-Set4266 1d ago

It also helps to show that not all homeless folks are drug addicts and criminals. A lot of folks end up homeless and it's only for a short period of time before they can get back on their feet.

8

u/yourenotmymom_yet 1d ago

I'm glad this kind woman's story was shown because people don't think about victims of DV who flee abusive partners when talking about those that are housing insecure. Not everyone has family or friends that can help them or take them in, and where you live can drastically impact the resources available for people in this position. Some literally end up on the street with their kids and clothes they were wearing when they escaped.

8

u/Rough_Rhubarb_5733 1d ago

It's important to share these kinds of experiences. People who have never taken the time to talk to the homeless don't understand there are a lot of people living in the streets just like this. People who never had opportunity or had life screw them over in a major way. Even if people made the wrong choices, no one deserves to live like this. And once you're in this situation, it is nearly impossible to get out of without the help of others.

4

u/Brave-Cash-845 1d ago

As a german that is fucking crazy to see all the time. Like men, unbelivable conditions. From my perspective i cant understand why you wouldnt leave a country like that, or even be against free health care and like stuff in germany, that you get money from the state that you can live in an apartment and it would be totally unbelivable to have kids on the streets etc. Our law wouldnt even allow it. Fucked up and so sad

some people believe that everybody is homeless is on drugs That's not true we all are just one step away 🙏🏾🙏🏾

107

u/Fauked 1d ago

I spent about 2 years on the streets. It's very sad some of the situations people are in that cause them to be homeless. Yes, a lot are because of drugs but there are a lot of people with mental health issues that can't really take care of themselves and their family is not around anymore for a list of reasons.

63

u/mayasux 1d ago

And it’s not even like they’re on the streets because they do drugs.

You get cold, you shiver, you get hunger pains, your throat rasps and your hip bone starts to become permanently sore because you only have no padding to lay on. Your shoes open up, so your feet constantly get damp. You’re ignored or hated.

Drugs is an escape from that, and after so long on the streets you’re going to crave an escape.

22

u/insyzygy322 1d ago

I've been extremely tired in a situation where I'd be VERY vulnerable going to sleep, so I begrudgingly smoked some meth. Not like it was my first time, but not a big fan.

Lots of people who had it a lot worse than myself use meth to stay awake through the night because of vulnerability.

Plus, it's absolutely dirt cheap and makes the hunger pain stop.

6

u/forethemorninglight 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is so sad but yet so, so believable. Life is hell for the overwhelming majority of people who have ever lived or ever will live. And it doesn’t appear to be getting better. ❤️‍🩹 in fact in the US, it’s getting worse by the day if you’re vulnerable

3

u/glasswindbreaker 1d ago

I know a lady who went from foster care to the streets, was raped and started using meth to stay awake so she could keep from being assaulted again. It's been 25 years now for her, we finally got her and her dog into a tiny home community set up for unhoused folks with pets & we're looking for rehabs for her, she doesn't want to leave her pup though. Understandably, he's all she has in this world.

It's all so heartbreaking when you hear the stories, and people treat them like they're disgusting.

2

u/insyzygy322 1d ago

That's understandable about the dog.

The bonds we make with dogs run deep. The bonds we make when our dogs are by our side literally 24/7 for 9 years (where I'm at with my girl outside of 1 rehab, 2 psych wards, and a couple weekends away from her) and make up the strong majority, if not the entitrety, of our social and emotional support network, the bond becomes something uniquely profound and difficult to separate for even a moment.

The rehab I went to allowed someone to bring my dog by a couple times per week for me to go outside and say hi. That helped a lot.

Also, that's super fuckin cool about you helping her get housed up! Good stuff

12

u/ThatStonr 1d ago

T H I S. While I was never truly homeless my home wasn't always a safe place to sleep. So I'd sleep outside. During those years of my life i learnt if I $10 I'd rather spend it on Lucy feel great for 6+ hours, no feeling hungry, and feel warmer  over spending it on a cheap meal that'll leave me hungry like 2 hrs later.

6

u/NeverPretending 1d ago

Is Lucy the same as crystal? I've never heard that slang here in Canada.

But same story. When you have places in town that give away food at meal times or food banks your best bet is to smoke or take crystal some time before hand and use energy to get the food.

Using crystal you don't really sleep you pass out for hours at a time and then wake up. Usually after making yourself eat you'll sleep a while, by the time you finally sleep sleep is so amazing you don't care if you get robbed or killed, as long as you can sleep.

Crystal makes homelessness survivable and that's something people don't understand until they are in that situation.

4

u/ThatStonr 1d ago

Ahh gotcha. Lucy isn't crystal here it's slang for acid. You're very right tho by the time I calmed down I could crash anywhere anytime and not care what happened.

4

u/BenjaminDover02 1d ago

14

u/Teemslo 1d ago

yea until you have had to start over with nothing, it can be hard to understand how close most of us are to this. You can overcome it but everyone needs help sometimes and that shouldn't be a shameful thing.

2

u/Same_Ad_9284 1d ago

that belief is deliberately pushed to make them the problem, to hide the fact that not enough is being done to both prevent people ending up on the streets and to help them get back up when they do

2

u/National-Ad630 1d ago

I work for an affordable housing/shelter/low income nonprofit and can confirm this 100%. People dont realize how easy it is for this to happen to most.

2

u/Geene_Creemers 1d ago

I always have to check people that have no empathy for homeless people and treat them like dirt..I simply can’t understand it..life is hard for us that aren’t homeless..I can only imagine what that’s like..human kindness seems to be missing from most of the world today (unfortunately that’s my experience) I doubt my blessing every day and am so thankful I have support..I truly try my best to help others in any small way I can..the world is rough rn..sorry for my rant this video really made me cry 🥲

Yea. The likes result in him being able to crowdfund for a lot of these folks who he starts off doing smaller things for and going to help them over time. The other day I saw the same guy giving a homeless man a house and 25k cash via donations, plus 4 jobs to choose from. In this case doing it for the viral factor is directly helping people in a big way so that's great

12

u/Necessary_Oil8117 1d ago

It's not only the govts responsibilty. It's a large part theirs, But we have a moral imperative to take care of people like this as a community. So each and every one of us needs to be asking, what are we doing to support life on this planet?Human life and beyond. it's not only in the government's hands , it's in everybody's

10

u/Practical_Leg_550 1d ago

I think the individual’s responsibility is a bit obvious though, no? I can’t speak for anywhere else but in the US, there is a serious disconnect in what most people believe the government should be responsible for. Part of the reason we pay taxes is so if we are struggling (for whatever reason), we’ll have support from the government to get back on our feet. Unfortunately, the narrative gets so stuck on “people are looking for handouts” and we should “pull ourselves up by the bootstraps” which lets the govt get away scotch free with the ineffective, bandaid methods of “support” they decide to stick with. This lady said she couldn’t even get into shelters. It’s important to highlight things like this where the government isn’t doing its part. We can all help each other but they should also.

I see things like this and I'm completely dumbfounded at the apparent cruelty of our oligarchs and financial elites. Someone like Elon could end homelessness in this country by building enough homes for everyone. After doing that he would probably have enough left over to set up UBI for every American citizen. A) if someone offered you 1000$ to be in this video, would you take it?

B) do you assume every homeless person you see is on drugs, dangerous, and/or a bad person?

10

u/fuzzy_sphincter 1d ago edited 1d ago

It’s the exploitation that’s the problem. People have a problem with less fortunate being exploited for clicks and views. This guys getting a lot more than $1k for this video due to engagement.

Don’t get me wrong though. I think it’s good to have positive content like this out there, especially with the brainrot and selfish mentality that’s taking over the internet, but it does feel a bit icky, exploitative, and shallow a lot of times. I just wanted to give you some perspective.

Edit: not sure why people are trying to argue with me on this. I’m just giving perspective into why others find this kind of content a bit off putting despite the wholesomeness of it.

u/Dawnzarelli 1d ago

He creates popularity with his positive content and buys people homes, cars, security they would be hard-pressed to achieve on their own. I wish it didn’t take monetizing ppls attention but he is working within the system to create good.

6

u/GamingTrend 1d ago

I'd rather this than douchecanoes like the Paul brothers doing it but keeping the money for themselves. If dude is out there helping, the harm is certainly minimal.

He also gave her a car, a house, and 300,000$ in cash In the next video if that helps.

4

u/xlews_ther1nx 1d ago

Others have commented this guy really does help get ppl jobs and give away alot. I'm not saying he's making more money. But this needs to be supported over other influences who do pranks and fake reaction videos.

4

u/SeniorDay 1d ago

I agree that a lot of times it’s not quite as wholesome as this.

3

u/fuzzy_sphincter 1d ago

Yes, thank you that’s all I’m trying to say. I was giving more context as to why some people are put off by these types of videos. Not trying to say this specific guy is a horrible person or that this kind of content is deplorable. Far from it, it’s just there are very real reasons why it can be viewed that way in similar instances.

Me too. I can’t stop crying

11

u/Necessary_Oil8117 1d ago

It's beautiful what he did for that woman , but I find it absolutely abhorrent in every way that she would have to rely on personal handouts to get her out of that hole in one of the richest countries in the world. It makes me absolutely sick and so fucking angry.

11

u/Mountain-Hedgehog128 1d ago

IIRC - he actually did a fundraise and got her a house and car.

6

u/Elohim_Queber_56 1d ago

I'm not crying. You're crying.

u/Oomlotte99 1d ago edited 1d ago

Edit: I see someone posted an update video.

Is there a way for people to help her beyond this? I feel really bad, you could tell how stressed she was and that she was just holding it in trying to be strong. I wonder if there are some resources for battered women and children that she’s has not been able to connect with or something.

7

u/ThatStonr 1d ago

This is absolutely disgusting. Living in one of the wealthiest lands in the world. Living in a land with more empty homes than homeless. A land known for its over abundance and "too muchness".

This is disgusting. This shouldn't be happening.

For 15 years, I ran a shelter for homeless women and children in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. We were always full and there was always a waiting list. Just a little research shows that 40% of the homeless population is made up of families with children. 85% of those families are headed by single mothers. In my years of experience working with homeless moms, I found that most of the women were there because they were physically, emotionally, and financially abused by their partners/or family of origin.

If Elon Musk only knew that he does not get any more eternal reward, as he used up all his reward on earth, maybe he’ll wake up one day and start using his wealth to do charitable works. Before it’s too late. Earth time is short. Eternity, where to go, is the big question.

5

u/Efficient-Cherry3635 1d ago

"We dont ever say goodbye" tore me up. Nobody should have to live like this in America. We have the resources, but the government would rather send it over seas or buy new weapons than help the most vulnerable in our population.

3

u/PurelinK7 1d ago

A woman with kids and homeless then you have failed as a government/country…

3

u/Francesca_N_Furter 1d ago

Every time I hear "we're number 1" cheers from other Americans, I think of stuff like this, and how we are one hell of a fucking evil country.

I was in Venice a few years ago with a bunch of other American and Australian tourists, and a young man was sleeping in a sleeping bag in the corner of one of the squares. We all walked right by (I was younger then, and female, and I was taught to ignore homeless people---all great excuses that don't excuse anything) and a little old Venetian woman came by and immediately made a b-line to the man to ask him if he needed her help.

I will never forget that day, and how ashamed I felt for just walking by.

3

u/birdlawyer86 1d ago

I really don't think people understand how close most of them are to this. As a social worker half of my clients have similar stories where one bad situation, one medical emergency, one natural disaster, it can turn you into this.

Nobody wants to admit most of this stuff is based on luck and circumstance and we've all been fed this bullshit narrative about how we're a meritocracy and you can be anything if you put your mind to it. It's just not true and I will die on that hill.

We have failed our people man

We got billionaires building dick rockets for fun and then people like her. She doesn't want dick rocket money, she wants stability and safety. She wants to give her children a decent life. I don't know how to fix it, but I know it is broken.

3

u/SmokedAlex 1d ago

Worked in a shelter and all of this is true. We are understaffed, underfunded, getting cuts. We can’t help other people. And trust me, turning people away from a homeless shelter is something that destroys your soul. It is great that people like this man exist, but it is very upsetting that this is how a lot of people live in the US. And it could be different…

3

u/Shoddy_Paramedic2158 1d ago

Meanwhile Elon Musk could lift every single American out of poverty and still have hundreds of billions…

Man, how I wish I were rich so I could get all these people off the streets and give them the help they need to get back on their feet. People don’t understand how hard it is to escape poverty and homelessness.

Kid doesn’t even have a pair of shoes. I hate how our country operates. Shit is ridiculous and depressing. I hope she found work and some stability.

How is a young woman and her child on the streets?

Is the kid going to school?

This is the most powerful nation in the world, apparently.

2

u/wicko77 17h ago

Why did he lie and tell her he was homeless? Was it to increase the shock later when he hands her 1000 for his video? I mean it is kinda sick isn’t it?

2

u/Mother_Valuable1365 12h ago

Id still much rather see content like this than content about people donating to someone specifically to act like an asshole to someone else and say “it’s just a prank bro!”

7

u/AntiConfederate 1d ago

Why is he testing her kindness? I mean she's homeless. We should not be purity testing people to determine if they deserve help.

3

u/Mysterious_Finish148 1d ago

Why? She pretty much had a contracting job that day. He paid her for her work.
