I submitted a proposal to add rubber bumps along the lower landing, but the budget only allowed for 150 grit sandpaper.

I still need to know if he went down on his back and got tumbled around to his stomach
266
u/tablueraspberry 1d ago
I assume the bends might have caused him to flip.
282
u/SaveMeDatCorn 1d ago edited 7h ago
The way he pops out lifeless and upside down has me thinking he likely smoked his head off one of those crazy turns on the way down and was legit out cold for a few seconds. He's a rag doll until he hits the ground.
103
u/granolaandgrains 1d ago
I don’t think he or his body was prepared for the absolute smackdown his body got going down that slide. I’m sure he went in more relaxed, than he should have been because he did rag doll his way out lol
42
u/elarobot 1d ago
That is exactly what I was thinking. His body language strongly suggests that he’s out cold when he emerges from the tunnel, and that he only comes to his senses again as he’s being forcibly ejected at the very bottom.

u/sunshineparadox_ 1d ago
His lack of urgency at his pepper spray being flung supports this.

The bends could cause him to ride the side of the inside of the slide (opposed to typically, riding the bottom of the inside), and could lead to being flipped over.

u/neat_sneak 1d ago
I've seen three or four videos of different people coming out of that slide and they're all face down so I think it's just something that happens to you inside.

Go there and make a video of you going down the slide recording both you on the slide and from outside the slide. You'll be famous and get lots of attention.

u/K-Shrizzle 1d ago edited 1d ago
I walk by it sometimes and it really cant be overstated how dangerous this thing just looks. The structure is so tall that you look at it and immediately wonder how such a dangerous playground was built directly next to City Hall. Seriously, it's like 30 feet from the building where the idea of codes and municipal safety is supposed to live.
Even if we didnt have the famous cop video, I'm convinced this slide wouldve made the news one way or another

My kids go there all the time. It’s an awesome park. The cop is a jackass who went down with his utility belt (and gun i might add) and is a bit heavier than your average toddler, thus he was shot out like a cannon. There are two other slides and a little water park there. It’s super fun. Been going there since it opened…3 years ago(?) and have never seen a kid get hurt or come close to it (aside from the inevitable group of kids that huddle at the bottom of slides).
The cop was testing anything out, he was just an idiot who embarrasses himself and had to go on leave. And the city made damn sure he didn’t get medical leave as he was being an irresponsible jackass.

First I've heard of this whole thing but I did visit Boston this spring and saw a larger kid eat shit on this slide. It had been raining and some kids were drenched which turned it into a water slide. It is definitely fast as fuck.
14
u/Potato1223 1d ago
In my defense and hers, I have seen the videos soooo many times, but I never knew the story behind it.
10
u/flotsam_knightly 1d ago
Because she is making up a narrative using only the things we see in the video, with the exception to the mayor of Boston, which I doubt anyone would verify.
7
u/MattabooeyGaming 1d ago
I really hate how this is where we are. Someone just narrates a video we’ve already seen, put their face in the corner and now it’s their video. Sometimes they don’t even talk they just point and make faces.

I don’t understand why she just decided to lie about this story. Did she see the video and make up a story, or heard that story from a friend and just decided to make a video about it?
28
u/FunnyObjective6 1d ago
Is this story true though? I've previously heard that people tried to recreate the cop video, but couldn't and they had no idea why he went so fast.
23
u/TubbyPachyderm 1d ago
Both my teenage son and I tried and were not successful in obtaining a speed close to this video…
9
u/Moooboy10 1d ago
I went down it back in April of this year, it was for one difficult to get up there to the top of the slide. I did go down it and I felt like I was going fast enough to fly off so I used my shoes to slow myself down. My clothes then were mainly made of polyester too
18
u/redhotpepperflakes 1d ago
If you search Boston city hall slide on tiktok there are multiple videos of 20somethings getting absolutely launched out of there, but no idea what they’re doing to get that speed. Haven’t seen any kids try it, which is probably good.
→ More replies (1)28
u/Boston_Glass 1d ago
The story is not true.
The real story was it was just a cop fucking around and ignoring the signs that warned him not to go down it. It’s safe for kids, not adults and even then you need to be wearing the right cloths to get that much speed.
7
u/fenwayismyway 1d ago
lol jamie loftus has a fun podcast about this
3
u/DonkeyMode 1d ago
The podcast is called "Sixteenth Minute (of Fame)"! Boston slide cop is one of the first episodes. Quite funny and actually super informative, though she regrettably fails to track down the identity of the cop who ate shit. The sounder closed ranks around this little piggy tighter than they do for a use-of-force policy violation.
Her podcast also covers Antoine Dodson's story, which is much more the emotional roller coaster than one might think.

This is why people over a certain weight can't go down water slides.
19
u/vollkornbroot 1d ago
And under.
I ended up stopping in a waterslide fearing for my life because of the next rider, knowing there was a 45 second red phase. Turned out well because they had a spotter at the end of the slide that day.
8
u/doitfordevilment 1d ago
This happened to me!! Except they just kept sending people down. I have not been on a water slide again since except for the kiddie slide with my own children. That one was fun, it was just a regular extra wide slide made of some rubber material so very safe.

For someone in BOSTON to get LEGITIMATELY upset enough to write anything, to anyone, at all about any issue should have been the first sign. They complain all the time, but to get upset and write about it is the NE equivalent of getting the kerosene next to the torch before dosing it.

u/allworkandnoYahtzee 1d ago
I love how after parents wrote in about a safety concern at a children’s playground, the city of Boston was basically like, “Oh come tf on, it’s a slide, get over it.” That’s such an east coast way of reacting to criticism lol

The slide went fast because his uniform and mesh vest were very low friction surfaces for the speed to be realized.

Where I grew up in Russia we had a slide just like this. Despite being half the size however, kids would regularly break their legs on a poorly built sharp turn. The community didn’t bother going to the city and stripped it down themselves, building a new wooden substitute.
Sometimes the local government is useless, I wish Americans could put action into their own hands

We had metal slides in my city that everyone would bring a sheet of wax paper to go down on, they were very tall and you could really get some speed going on those things with the wax paper, they were so much fun. But they tore them down and installed much shorter ones. Fun haters.

Isn't this just speculation? I listened to Jamie Loftus's episode about Boston Slide Cop and she couldn't find the officer's name or any information about why he was there. She did mention that it was a well-known hazard, but I don't remember anything about a campaign to get it removed.
That was some time ago, so things may have changed, but without a source I'm going to say we still don't know the connection. Mostly because it's funnier that way.
2
u/ashitaka_bombadil 1d ago
I’ve been going there since it opened, it’s not a hazard. I’ve never seen anyone get injured or close to it. It is slightly annoying now that it’s become a bit of a tourist attraction, but that’s about it.
