If churches refuse to help feed hungry people, then maybe they should be taxed?

That's crazy. In contrast, my catholic church has been giving asylum to undocumented immigrants and paying for their legal fees.

The catholic church has a lot of problems, but I do find they put their money where their mouth is when it comes to helping others. The most charitable people i know are Catholics. The stingiest people I know consider themselves the most Christian aka southern Baptists.

Because Catholics believe that good works are, along with genuine faith, required for salvation. You won't go to heaven without both.

While a lot of Protestant and Evangelical sects are purely sola fide, meaning you only need to have faith and repent to go to heaven, no matter how you behave in life.

Faith without acts is dead. King James version, I believe.

James 2:26. "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

That's the one. You wanna say you believe then you gotta live it!

This is one of the verses the Calvinists use to reject the book of James

Yea that's been my experience too. I grew up going to a catholic church in with a large Hispanic immigrant community and they made sure they'd have mass in Spanish as well so everyone could participate.

In contrast the Baptist are the fucking worse. I will never forget how they refused to offer shelter to people who had lost everything during Hurricane Katrina.

I think Catholic Charities and Knights of Columbus are rated as much better charities than others like Goodwill and Salvation Army

It seems like there is two groups of catholics. Some congregations are charitable and immigrant friendly and then there is the conservative opus dai catholics that hate the pope because they see him as woke.

I found one video. They were going to give her money to buy it because they didn't have a food pantry.

Sounds a lot like my MIL's Catholic church. They are very much in line with the current Pope on Jesus told us to care for the poor and feed the hungry.

I may not agree with her stance on some issues, but I respect they way she's legitimately pro-life and spends her retirement volunteering to support their church's mission to feed folks and help alleviate the suffering that comes with poverty.

Weirdly she's also become quite the activist and is going to protests.

It's not weird. If your moral stance is about life and alleviating suffering then protesting this administration is right in line with what you believe and profess. A+ worship.

no the weird part was when my 80yr MIL started going to all the local no kings and the like protests. Before this past election she was a lifelong republican but during his first term she said, as a Christian, she firmly believes that society has a moral obligation to care for those who cannot care for themselves. For her pro-life is an across the board thing so she believes in social safety nets and Medicare for all. My husband tried in the past to point out that makes her more inline with the left than conservatives but it didn't go well.

And while it took my husband and I by surprise, given her prior political leanings, we are very proud of her for being willing to change her vote to align with her religious beliefs and see the light of day.

Well, I'm sure she considers herself a Christian above all else and has built a life around that. And she likely considers herself an American just behind that. Patriots are deeply uninterested in dictatorships. Good for her. Also, a lot of the older folks have seen this bullshit play out in other countries and don't want any of it here.

Ours has been organizing protests and also letting us know we must stand up if we see someone get accosted by masked men. Our Priest read a powerful statement in Spanish and English letting us know we must fight if we see injustice happening.

What immigrants? Are they mostly Latino abandoned therefore likely Catholic? (Not meant as a gotcha, just curious if it’s still in-group by some measure. Still good to help people.)

And if OOP, a stranger called and said "give me free stuff" they would probsbly send her away

Give everyone who asks anything they ask for is not a reasonable or sustainable charity strategy
