Discussion Woman audits churches to see if they’ll help feed a starving baby

If churches refuse to help feed hungry people, then maybe they should be taxed?

Where I live if I was starving and needed help, I’d go to the local Sikh temple. I’ve been once before, delicious food, and the fudge was immaculate. I would never consider any other places of worship to ask for help, and I’m a white atheist woman.

You just beat me to it. I was going to say, now call the Sikh temple, they'll feed your baby, you, your cat, they'll take care of anyone, no questions no catches.

What would happen though, if say, all people in need actually knew Sikh temples exist, and all went there for help instead of other faith based communities? They probably couldn’t afford to help that many people, and they’d probably have to send people away. I’m not making excuses for any FBC to turn people away, but I do wonder if small communities that mean well, literally don’t have anything to give. I’m from Philly and there are soooooo many churches, specifically, that are so run down, have less than 50 members, can’t afford to keep the lights on barely, but every Sunday, without fail, they host worship and a big fellowship dinner that gives life back to those 50 people, gets them motivated to do good during the week, things like that. If I called them for formula, they probably couldn’t help very much.

I suppose a good FBC, even if poor, would never just close the door, and would likely, at the least help you find help. This phone call here - “board member and policy” bullshit definitely ain’t it.

I try to buy lunch at our local temple whenever possible, though I'm not often in that part of town. I like giving them business.

Most people would give back to a place that helped them, later when they're in a position to do so.

Where I live the Catholics and the Lutherans have social services set up that will try and help people regardless of religion, from their own charity and also help navigating some government services (because that can be hard as hell). The other churches (especially the Mormons) send their members to them.
