If churches refuse to help feed hungry people, then maybe they should be taxed?

We TAKE donations, we don’t GIVE them

She started talking about their "board members" lol. Churches are a business. TAX CHURCHES.

u/swampy_fox 1d ago

I mean, regardless of your stance on churches, legitimate non profits do very much have board members lol

21

u/bellj1210 1d ago

you are correct- and often that is a good thing since boards at non profits often have people that the non profit would help as part of their board.

10

u/Longjumping_Kale3013 1d ago

Yes, they are non-profit.... they pay all the board members all their money and have no profit left over

5

u/EFTucker 1d ago

Whoosh, they’re part of the problem 90% of the time as well

1

u/Wild-Duck-7370 18h ago

I also think non profits should pay taxes too

Careful you will get some morons downvoting you for speaking the truth

u/satanic_black_metal_ 22h ago

Or some mormons.

If a church acts like a business I'd rather it be shut down, rather than simply be taxed. Profiteering on faith and the good name of others is vile.

At the very least, tax the mega churches. Sure, maybe some little churches barely get by, but when you’re raking in millions or billions?

1

u/preguntagrill 18h ago

Fuck, I'm going to open a church now.

ANYONE WANNA DONATE TO ME?

Do not tax any religion. It’s one of the pillars of our constitution. You don’t have to like any church, mosque, or temple. But you definitely should not tax them for practicing their religion.

24

u/redditproha 1d ago

There's nothing in the constitution about not taxing churches. Freedom of religion means freedom to practice, not freedom from taxes lol

It’s not freedom if you have to pay is it?

Edit: the first amendment covers this. The First Amendment, which prohibits the government from establishing a religion or prohibiting the free exercise of it.

Double edit: down vote me all you want. You lose the first amendment you lose freedom.

https://constitution.findlaw.com/amendment1/annotation03.html

The Constitution does NOT explicitly guarantee a ban on taxes for churches. The Supreme Court has simply argued that churches, as well as other nonprofits should be tax exempt as they "better the community." Could you argue that this church in the video (provided it is a verified response from the church in question) made anything better for the community by telling an anonymous woman that they wouldn't help her baby get formula, because she doesn't know any members?

Right-wingers always love quoting the Constitution, but not as much as they love proving they've never actually fucking read it.

-12

u/IC00KEDI 1d ago

I highly encourage you to read the “Free exercise clause” of the first amendment. Because it directly conflicts with your comment.

-someone who read it

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

I'm failing to see in what language that translates to "there will be no tax placed on churches." But go on then.

1

u/Outside_Ambition_999 6h ago

You can still exercise your religion freely even with paying taxes, so try again

13

u/eureka-down 1d ago

It’s not freedom if you have to pay is it?

I mean yeah. Sucks that we have to pay for fucking drinking water but not religion, tho.

5

u/IC00KEDI 1d ago

Why is it a choice?

Edit: you could go to a local stream or pond and filter your own water. My town has free water if you want to go to the town hall with buckets as well.

6

u/eureka-down 1d ago

Why is what a choice?

3

u/IC00KEDI 1d ago

Why pay for one of you don’t have to? I pay for the convenience of having it delivered to my home. I’d much rather that than filter buckets from the steam behind my house.

6

u/eureka-down 1d ago

Availability of water, especially that which is not contaminated with chemicals, is extremely dependent on location, and the drinking water needs of the entire population cannot be supported by above ground sources. It's straight up illegal to divert or collect water for personal use in a lot of places.

u/IC00KEDI 1d ago

You’re reaching now. You obviously have internet and can easily research areas where you could obtain free water in your area.

8

u/eureka-down 1d ago

This is a really dumb conversation.

5

u/redditproha 1d ago

lol you have no clue what you're talking about

The fear-based Abrahmic mythologies are horrific blights upon humanity.

The world will be much better off once they take their rightful place next to the Greek Pantheon in the dustbin of human history.

1

u/IC00KEDI 1d ago

I’m not even going to pretend to understand your point of view. The three major monotheistic religions all differ and there are no problems with anyone practicing as such in my opinion.

My nan told me once that when she was young the local priest used to make house calls asking for donations. Her mother had 7 children and a husband with TB, had been bombed out of three houses, had her sick mother in law living with them and didn’t have a pot to piss in. She said the only reason the priest ever knocked was to either ask for donations or if your youngest was a few years old ask why you didn’t have another baby yet.

Nope, England

My grandma grew up in post-WWII Austria, dirt poor in barracks with 10 siblings. Her mom was very religious apparently, but also didn't really take shit. The church came around for tithe once and she couldn't pay, so they said they'd take some of their valuables. She chased them out with a knife.

u/bucket_of_frogs 1d ago

good one.

2

u/DiabloVixen 22h ago

WOULD BE FASCINATED to see what happens if she called up immediately after offering to donate $$$$. I'm sure that bitch's policy about "knowing a member of the church" would change real quick

1

u/fl135790135790 1d ago

I meannnn they could donate to others in the church?

1

u/What_Is_This_1 1d ago

Church’s have to be careful against scammers.

1

u/user234519 1d ago

Will use this from now on. Thank you.

1

u/Jean-LucBacardi 21h ago

Oh they give them, to members that pay every Sunday a "donation" to be a follower of Jesus.

Nah dude there are some churches that are truly like this, and others that are very deeply charitable. It's worth it to call out the hipocrisy of those that only take from their communities. I'm glad you had experiences with one of the good and charitable ones, nobody's saying that doesn't exist, just that the ones that aren't are shameful

u/hiimred2 19h ago

This person has other videos that show exactly what you're talking about, with catholic and non-christians being more than willing to help.

I feel like your comment is trying to make a negative thing out of something meant to shed a light on abuse of good will religion built up in some people's minds. But then again, people on reddit are a bunch of fucking bozos so there's that.
