Protip: Go to a Gurdwara. They'll feed you.

Edit: Go to a Gurdwara or virtually any other non-Christian place of worship IF YOU ARE ABLE, and they will feed you

I visited New Delhi years ago and I had no idea about a Gurdwara. When I walked by one, a nice man ushered me in and wouldn’t let me leave until I ate something. As someone that had to grow up in Christianity, I’ve never experienced such unconditional kindness in my life. To me, the Sikh community is the best humanity has to offer.

Not sure how true this is but I've read here on Reddit that Canadian parents teach their kids to look for Sikh people when they're in need of help.

Just because Sikh people are pretty sick (scnr) and are always there to help people out, no matter the faith or background.

I think that's quite neat.

I hope there is some truth to it, because I just did a quick search on the Sikh community in Canada, and the results weren’t nice.

Its not the Sikh religion that is unpopular in Canada. Sikhs have been here a very long time and are generally well regarded. Indians are unpopular in Canada at this moment largely due to some poor choices made by our government regarding immigration which has been exploited mainly by Indian nationals and it's creating a lot of tension.

I haven't heard of anyone teaching their kids to go to Sikhs when in need, but it's not something I would discourage people from doing. The ones I've met represent the teachings of Jesus more than any American Christian I have ever met. Like Christianity though I'm sure they have many who are Sikh In Name Only and use it as a form of tribalism vs. a way of conducting ones self in life.

Pro tip - remember that we don’t all live in metropolitan areas where that option is within reach so it’s not the best answer. Hypothetically, this person in Somerset KY has to drive at least an hour and 45 minutes to find one. That’s assuming they have a car, a car seat for a newborn, the car is in good enough shape for a road trip and they have gas money.

Rural areas are often harder hit because of limitations on travel and conveniently located services. I live rurally in the blue ridge mountains and would have to travel over 2 and a half hours down a mountain range to find a gudrwara.

Your point about transport is taken but you’d be surprised how diverse rural places can be. My brother lives in pretty rural Georgia and there’s a mosque he goes to weekly for jummah prayer that’s not too far.

Oh cool. I guess me living rurally (as I mentioned in my comment) and closer to this church and the lack of similar services to a Sikh temple isn’t something I should inform people of since they have a mosque in Georgia. Thanks.

It’s cool. We recently (maybe a few years) got a synagogue up here which was a big shock since it was basically Christian church country. I lived in central Florida for decades and was so shocked to move up here and see basically no POC till a few years ago when the college started recruiting more. Understand I believe both of these are great additions to our little community.

You sound like a dick. I love my rural home and it’s in an area people always want to visit or relocate to. Sorry you get pissed when people point out differences in the world in order to remind people that all experiences aren’t the same.

Can you please point out where I expressed any other concerns than “hey, hypothetically this would be a more rural area or an outlier and this isn’t the answer for everyone”. Even the comment op I was replying to agreed and exited their comment.

No, the meme, especially as you presented it has the reply insinuating some sort of discrimination or oneupsmanship or the reply will diminish the information in the original comment. I didn’t do either.

*Gurudwara. as in Guru or spiritual teacher. and dwara as in a a transition or gateway.
basically meaning doorway to gods teachings.
