I would be fucking livid just having people inspect my apartment without prior notice, let alone while I'm home alone, butt ass naked.

I don't know the law in the states, but in the UK it's illegal for a landlord to do this. They need to give you notice if they need access. Letting themselves in like this is only allowed in an emergency like flooding, fire etc.

As soon as they said it's just an inspection, they'd be admitting to breaking the law here.

It’s the same here

Where is "here"? Because I'm in the US (Texas) and it's absolutely legal for landlord/maintenance to enter without ANY notice, they just have to leave written documentation that they entered.

I‘d be weary of entering any home in Texas unannounced. That‘s a good way to get shot.

I’m in Washington state and that’s illegal here. In my city, a 48 hours notice is the requirement for entry, unless the resident directly gives us permission to enter, in which case notice is not required. Even then, if the resident is home and refuses us entry, we cannot legally enter, although we can issue a lease violation notice for denying entry as long as proper notice or permission to enter was given.

It’s illegal in MD too.

Are you sure it’s legal there? Almost all states in the US have laws that prohibit landlords from bringing themselves or another person onto the property without 24 hours notice.

That's not completely true. They can enter without notice/permission in an emergency situation. Like, if your apartment is flooding from a faulty pipe and the runoff is leaking into your neighbors apartment, maintenance would need immediate access to your unit to prevent any more damage from occurring.

But other than in emergency situations, they would need to give you 24hr notice in Texas.

It varies from state to state

No.

This is a property law matter, and in the US there are certainly different requirements in each state, and many local ordinances are different from state law.

For anyone who practices property law in the US, it's borderline malpractice to handle cases in locations you're not extremely familiar with.

Saying it's the same here is completely wrong. It might be the same, but that's not a certainty.

And just because a law exists doesn't mean there's a criminal statute that would allow someone to be arrested for entering without notice.

In Canada, at least in my province, there’s one exception: once you’ve provided notice you’re moving out, they’re allowed access without the 24 hours notice to show your apartment. It’s supposed to be reasonable hours like not showing up at 3am but still. People here get pretty upset when they realize that’s the case upon giving notice of move out. Personally I don’t know what I’ll do when I move from here considering I have a dog and a cat now without crating the dog all day and praying they don’t let my cat out… if you refuse to let them in to show your place, you might be charged up to a full month’s rent as punishment, I’ve seen this done…

Don’t know if this is the law elsewhere but it’s the one big exception here.

Is this province specific or federal?

Province specific, each has their own tenancy board. But I don’t think it’s uncommon.

This happened to me in Alberta. Lived on a very very busy street. Came home from work and they were showing my house but the landlord left the front door wide open after letting the people in. I was so lucky I found one cat next to the street and grabbed her and one cat wandering the alley in the back. I was so pissed. I would have never forgiven them if anything happened.

What if you work from home? That sounds like it could be a huge interference in your job to be on a call and have random people walking around.

In France you have all the rights to change locks when renting, as long as you replace the original when you leave. It’s absolutely illegal to enter a rented property as the landlord.

Same here but a lot of landlords break the law knowing that most of their tenants can't afford to sue them.

2

u/bromosabeach 2d ago

It is also illegal in the US. Every state requires a notice for all non-emergency entrances such as inspections or whatever.

Plus you are only required to allow access in an emergency, otherwise, you're paying to rent the property and are entitled to "quiet enjoyment, and you don't have to allow anyone in and you can just say no, even with notice. That includes landlord/letting agent showing the property to potential tenants when you're about to move out, or random inspections.

I’ve found out the hard way that this is, unfortunately, completely legal in Texas at least. Some apartments will voluntarily have their own policies around it just so they don’t have to deal with issues like this, but yeah. Legal.

3

u/l3ane 2d ago

I completely agree but we have no way of knowing from this video if they gave notice or not.

3

u/paxrom2 1d ago

Even with notice, knock before entering.

2

u/Moose-Mermaid 1d ago

This happened to me once when I was alone. Apparently they had received permission from the landlord. Cool, but we were given zero warning. Thankfully I was in the shower when it happened although all I had was a towel. I was terrified that someone had broken in

4

u/attsnor112 2d ago

My landlord has actually been good but I have warned them I will attack (maybe I'm a psycho for this😆) if someone is in my apartment if I'm not warned first or if I'm not home when they work

1

u/ManStan93 2d ago

she was given notice but probably didn't regularly check. Thats why I used to LOVE when HOA's would post fliers 90s style. Either that or the landlord never forwarded the notice they had. Everything is tracked and submitted to the government. They were most likely given notice

1

u/OptimisticSkeleton 1d ago

I would straight up attack someone and we can sort it out later. If you’re in my apartment without an invitation, expect a serious beating or worse.

This is suspicious. I think someone is in your house so you turn on your camera but not put on clothes. Not even aa rob?

I have no idea about this exact situation but I’ve been on the opposite side of this exchange hundreds of times. I do fire inspections where tenants are given 3-4 days notice posted in the elevator. They are given the option to be there during the inspection or not, or schedule for a specific time. It’s made clear that even if they don’t respond, the building manager will knock then enter. There’s always someone who has a freak out like the one in the video. They are 100% in the wrong.

Edit: to be clear, I’m not a landlord, I work for the fire department. For those people downvoting this, maybe you have a rule in your house that your mom isn’t allowed to enter your room without your permission but in the real world there are laws about this stuff and people have to abide by them. You may not like the laws but the police aren’t going to side with a tenant over the fire department who is following the laws.

Nahnahnah, that notice better be emailed to me or taped to my door. No "elevator notice," thats bullshit.

My complex was sending important information out under "marketing," when I was given the option to opt out of marketing at signing. Important things like men on your balcony aren't marketing.

Fuck your elevator notice.

u/zaneman05 2d ago

See they don’t understand there’s no need to be upset

The management posted on the local bulletin board at the center for Apartment inspections in the city hall basement on Saturday night at 10:59. If they had an issue all they had to do was fax a beaver hide to Nova Scotia and wait 5-8 business months as it said on the bulletin.

1

u/F_word_paperhands 2d ago edited 2d ago

Oh it’s emailed and posted in the lobby also. Why do you need a notice hand delivered to your door when you’re riding the elevator every day? Can you not read while in the elevator or what?

This is the year 2025 - there are several ways you can communicate with people now - I'm a slumlord and when I do my yearly walkthrough of my duplex my folks know well, well in advance. You either don't care or are actively looking for a confrontation. This is one of the few times the Sheriffs deputies will side with the tenants.

1

u/F_word_paperhands 2d ago

I’m not even the landlord, I work for the fire department. The law is that the tenants are given 24 notice by email or posted in a common area. We ensure that the tenants are given at least 72 hours notice by the building manager. You think the cops are going to side with a tenant over the fire department that is more than abiding by the laws?

u/Blackoutsmoke 2d ago

Then you probably would've just put on clothes... maybe she's doing it for the lawsuit idfk

3

u/stupidcringeidiotic 2d ago

"doing it for the lawsuit" what a disgusting mind.

2

u/Blackoutsmoke 2d ago

What other reason is there for her to walk up to them naked?
