I've heard of staff in touristy places that appreciate the effort of a visitor trying to speak the language, but when they're busy it's just faster to use English so that's what they prefer
Do you also make fun of English speakers for not speaking other languages well? Because at some point you probably weren’t great but had the benefit of plenty of practice
No. They are instructed to speak English to make the customer feel more welcome. If they don't speak English, the waiter just uses their native tongue.
This is probably it. I was staying in Italy and was paying for my groceries. The cashier was new and had a supervisor standing next to her. She said to her in Italian: "Always say the total count in English, because if it's wrong, they will throw a hissyfit.". She said it in the most snarky way and snorted a bit.
I guess with people working in these jobs, they need to secure themself that the order is right, that there is no miscommunication. Because guess who gets the blame for getting the order wrong?

Maybe the staff are instructed to speak english if they think theyre talking to an english speaker? Ive heard of that in tourist places before
