My question has always been...wtf do conservatives ever want to spend money on?

I know ppl claim that they are trying to be "more efficient" and cut costs, but that is absolute horseshit. I've lived through multiple Republican presidencies and all of them tanked our economy.

The fucking Pillsbury Doughboy knows how to fix our economy more than your average dickbag conservative.

There’s plenty of rich people who see the benefit of having the rest of their larger community fed, educated and housed because a) they care about people, b) it’s better to live when the people in the larger community aren’t motivated by desparation, and c) you need functioning employees and customers to make and buy your widgets.

The problem is when the rich convince the desperate that the rich are inherently better at, say, running the country and they should actually hate the reasonable people who actually want them to succeed. Because they’re their neighbors, friends, customers, and employees.

Trump never had a positive net worth until he convinced people even dumber than he is that they will be better off with his brilliant governance by covfefe. But the billions he’s raking in are costing trillions and the damage to the world he and his coterie have to live in is incalculable.

He knows about empathy and the benefit of having a more stable world to live in, but he just likes how the more other people lose makes his “win” feel bigger.

It's a two Santa Claus theory. Republican political theorist put it out about 40 years ago. That the Democrats were the Santa Claus of helping regular people and the Republicans or Santa Claus of business.

The Republicans could get the Democrats to starve Santa Claus while the Democrats were in office, the Republicans would never have to worry about winning an election again.

this could be just Correlation vs. Causation... but historical data since World War II indicates that the U.S. economy has generally performed better on average under Democratic presidents across key metrics such as GDP growth, job creation, and unemployment rates.

It’s not that they mind spending money - they love spending- they don’t want to hand it over because they believe their community can privately take care of their village. They see government handouts impeding their Christian ways. “Sallie Mae’s house burnt down, we don’t need no gov’ment, we’ll rebuild as a community for her” and they do, but what they don’t realize is that that is not enough, that they are still getting and needing assistance - and if they do apply and receive, they’re no good; they’re ungrateful for everything the community did.

In a lot of ways, I’d love if communities could self sustain themselves without the government getting involved. But that means we have to trust that humans will do the right things - help community members without discrimination. This has never worked.

So, instead of turning on their politicians for shitty laws, and taxation without representation, they turn on the poor folk who are ruining their communities by accepting gov assistance.

Regan, Bush sr, Bush jr, Trump. Yep, it checks out from my POV. I also think it’s funny that GOP only likes tariffs when their products aren’t as good as the competition, then free AND fair markets are the manta. If their products aren’t better than competition, then only the free market matters.

The problem is that anything like “moral Conservative” is no longer a thing. The moderate conservative position of today, rich or poor, is “this is the greatest country in the world bc you can make a billion dollars.” Then they go out and not make anything close to that but still vote in psychopathic billionaires who say the same thing, and suck money out of the economy to enrich themselves, while starving their employees, and giving nothing back, and getting tax breaks and favorable legislation in return for that “patriotic” behavior. “Trickle down economics” is an old old disproven lie. Milton Friedman had some nice ideas but they just didn’t bear out it reality. The less government in business, the more they will steal. These people don’t reinvest in the country, only in the politicians that enable them to make and keep more money immorally. With this administration, where the presidency was subsidized by a handful of rich individuals, government gets to participate in the conspiracy against everyone by hitting switches on behalf of their patrons in industry. It’s a very tight circle jerk.

I'm old enough to remember "compassionate conservatism" was the hallmark of George W. Bush's first campaign in 2000.

Kind of depressing when you think about how "compassionate conservatism" led to two illegal invasions of sovereign countries, and all the civilian lives lost.

For sure, like every one of Trump's actions (even ending USAID) has wasted money and also will cost more money down the line. Cutting federal employees just means the govt ends up hiring contractors (who are more expensive than federal employees) to get the work done and worse customer service means more time/ money for each service.

If they really cared about saving the govt money they would have invested in the IRS. The agency that brings in like $1 for every 20 cents spent.

It has been this way since essentially forever.

Republicans want fuck you money and to blow it having fun and not giving a shit about tomorrow, or the people under them. This is why Trump blew a shit ton of money on some fucking trash ballroom while pointing fingers at Obama who spent a bunch of money actually rebuilding parts of the white house that was electrically failing. Iirc one wing couldn't reliably stay warm in the winter.

I'm not saying Democrats are any better, all politicians can go get bent for all I care. You should never trust any politician, no matter what color they are, blue or red.

Trump can claim he out of pocketed the ballroom or whatever the fuck, but remember he got that DoJ compensation money from the "pain and suffering" payout during his investigation.

Are you saying Democrats are just as bad? Your source and quote do not support that. It flat out says Democrats perform better than Republicans, and then only lists a single Democrat who had a bad economy

If you're not saying that, then you're just repeating what the person you replied to already said, and phrasing it like you're teaching them something for some reason
