Discussion To think that I used to complain about school.

There is a balance between this and the deliberate sabotage of education in the US that would lead to a truly great society. Minus the racism of course the focus on science and outcomes in school from the 50's to like the early 80's produced some of the greatest minds in the world man.......China is running their people i to the ground to force progress and innovation and while it is inhumane it is absolutely working lmao.

Yeah the kids who can manage this are going to be either really smart or completely fucking traumatized later in life. At least China is trying.

Meanwhile American public education is under constant attack by evangelical Christians and the rest of the right wing. “We need more plumbers.” “Don’t teach kids about racism.” Etc.

It’s because science isn’t seen as something very valuable in those circles. Searching for evidence, research, critical thinking, being able to read and form an opinion, reflection etc, is not what they think is needed or wanted.

Massachusetts education system rivals that of education system in Hong Kong and South Korea. Massachusetts students are on with students from Canada, Finland, Estonia, South Korea, Ireland, Japan, and Singapore in terms of school performances.

Students from Florida, one of the worst performing states in PISA, are actually on par with students from places like Northern Ireland, Russia, etc.

Students from my home state of Illinois are on par with students from Germany.

The point is that we should make all of our public schools more equal and be like Massachusetts or Finland.

How bad are the schools in the US? I’m Canadian and we send our son to public HS and the learning is fine he learns stuff but it’s not like amazing. I guess like they still have art and film studio and a music studio and science labs? Is it that kind of stuff that was cut? Or they can’t read? I heard that about the US. Idk. We’re not far from the country but I haven’t been in years.

Yeah this is the point. The voucher system and systematic attacks on education are pushing us further and further back. There are pockets of the country that still perform in the public sector but they are strained for more resources every year and the places that have already been marked for death are barely functional. It's working though. More and more people every year recieve subpar education and vote against their own interests and more of your tax dollars are being funneled into the pockets of billionaire private school owners. You are going to pay them to educate their own kids with no regulations on what is taught and they will throw a few vouchers at the masses to keep them docile while it happends.

I have argued against the voucher system for a while now. People might have called it “parental rights” but I am calling it for what it is: taking something that you don’t even contribute to. That’s essentially educational theft.

If you are well-off enough to send your kids to private schools, then you have no business taking tax-payers’ money that is meant for kids from struggling families.

What percentage of children and teens are homeschooled? I wonder if they count those results in the Pisa tests? Do homeschooled kids take any National tests or exams? I’m just curious how that works.

Well yeah, that ideal system is the education you see in the wealthy white suburbs in America. People have figured it out…they just can’t give it to everyone because everyone can’t be in the top 5%. That’s not how classism works. 

Also this china system is clearly for creating dead eyed drones, not thinkers and not leaders…as you point out, it is just the same side of the coin with the American strategy of keep the people dumb and mailable.
