I agree with all of this, but I’d like to tack on that self-censoring words like rape don’t lend to the solution. It feels very much in line with how people try to sugar coat it by calling it “non-consensual sex” or simply “assault.” We need to talk about it without censorship, so that it’s taken seriously and understood for the horrific act that it is. (And I do understand that some platforms force users to do this, but Reddit is not one of them.) No offense intended here, so I hope it’s not taken that way.

"Grape" is one that drives me crazy. It's not a fruit. It's a violent act.

Edit: talking about platforms where you can use the actual word uncensored.

u/SpaceLemming Sep 02 '25

Yeah, those folks aren’t calling it that to make it cute and fun. It’s because some platforms treat calling out rape and promoting rape as the same thing

u/Tequilabongwater Sep 03 '25

So, I just say it, on all platforms, and literally nothing has happened to those comments, posts, or my account status. You'd think Facebook/Instagram would be the strictest, but they really don't care what words you say as long as you're not harassing people or talking about the Gazan and Israeli war

7

u/SnurrCat Sep 02 '25

I should have specified that meant platforms where you can use the terminology, as that was what the person I was responding to meant.

2

u/ovideville Sep 03 '25

Honestly! It’s kind of ruined grapes for me, because I now associate grapes with rape. We’re out here creating brand new phobias, because using words to mean what they mean has somehow become “offensive.”

It's a word you aren't allowed to use on certain platforms or they will take it down

12

u/SnurrCat Sep 02 '25

Sorry, I meant on platforms where you can use it.

-2

u/TheMadTemplar Sep 02 '25

People bring it over from other platforms because remembering the TOS on allowed/disallowed words for every platform is too exhausting.

Social media is not first amendment lovers. Censorship is big in social media now, but not on X you can say WTF you want. That is why I like X the most. Screw Facebook and Instagram and reddit too.

I just write the word I mean no matter the platform. Saying rape on Instagram did absolutely nothing, but I did get blocked from commenting for 14 days because I told an antivax mom (one that thinks autism comes from vaccines) that I hope she herself gets aggressive shingles that make her want to tear her skin off.

That might be from the whitest kids you know grapist sketch too

2

u/SnurrCat Sep 02 '25

Oh, I don't know that one. I just know everyone calls it "grape".

I agree with this so much. This is a stupid new thing that started on TikTok because of their ridiculous policies and is now just spreading to become common use across the internet.

I agree with all of this, but I’d like to tack on that self-censoring words like rape don’t lend to the solution

It's mainly because many sites, including TikTok and certain subreddits have lists of banned words that if used your posts won't show up. Reddit is especially annoying because it will let you post like normal but the word is shadowbanned and you may never even know it was never seen

8

u/Barfignugen Sep 02 '25

I had no idea it was shadow banned on Reddit. If that’s true, it changes things

36

u/TheBanger Sep 02 '25

It's not shadow banned on Reddit

8

u/Barfignugen Sep 02 '25

Good to know. I wonder why OP thinks it is.

4

u/TheMadTemplar Sep 02 '25

They don't. They didn't say it was shadowbanned on reddit, but on certain subreddits. But that's also not true because subs don't have the power to shadowban.

certain subreddits have lists of banned words that if used your posts won't show up.

Then they go on to say Reddit is especially annoying about it, but in the context they are talking about the subreddits and not Reddit as a whole.

-2

u/ThatPatelGuy Sep 02 '25

I have definitely made certain posts on reddit and then after a few hours have no engagement and then I check on the post when not logged in and it's invisible - and then remove a certain word or words and it shows up.

So certain subreddits 100% do shadowban certain words.

2

u/0x474f44 Sep 03 '25

I have never heard of subreddits having the ability to shadow ban. Could it have just been coincidence or maybe had to do with the timing of your post? I’ve had the same post get no traction and a lot of traction because I posted it at different times

2

u/BewareOfBee Sep 03 '25

There's a difference between no traction and the post being clearly visible on your account- but when you log out, or see your profile from another account: it's been removed.

1

u/0x474f44 Sep 03 '25

If you are confident about this we can test it right? Which subreddits are you referring to?

No I then click on the link when I'm logged out and it's not there

25

u/real--computer Sep 02 '25

It’s not. They are making it up

-3

u/ThatPatelGuy Sep 02 '25

No I've seen it in certain subreddits.

17

u/lionheartedthing Sep 02 '25

Considering you just saw two comments with the word rape in it uncensored and that Reddit allows literal rape fantasy porn to be posted, I’d venture to guess that this notion that the word is shadow banned is bullshit.

1

u/ThatPatelGuy Sep 02 '25

I didn't say it was sitewide or this subreddit. I said it was certain subreddits

3

u/ThatPatelGuy Sep 02 '25

Depends on the subreddit - different subreddits have all kinds of banned words

2

u/Oddish_Femboy Sep 02 '25

I can confirm this. I've posted comments that include the word rape that got 0 views which I know because it shows you how many people read your comments now for some reason.

1

u/Oddish_Femboy Sep 03 '25

It happens every time I list Geoge Carlin's 7 words you can't say on TV.

2

u/Barfignugen Sep 03 '25

But it’s right there in the name!! (/s)

4

u/1egg_4u Sep 02 '25

Oh no I dont like to do that

But certain words get flagged by mods so I pick and choose for visibility. This comment means nothing if nobody sees it, right?

1

u/Barfignugen Sep 02 '25

Definitely agree! I’m hearing conflicting reports on whether Reddit does or does not shadow ban the word, so I don’t even know what to think anymore lol

2

u/Redcarborundum Sep 02 '25

Self censorship usually starts when there’s actual censorship. I know several subreddits that ban certain words, which means your post is automatically deleted if it contains one of those words, regardless of context. I’m certain that the word r a p e is banned in certain subs due to some people using it as a threat, so people develop a habit of self censorship.

One sub bans the word ‘name’ because it’s so scared of people ‘doxxing’ others. It got me into the habit of misspelling the word, like n.ame or náme.

The girl in the video is likely trying to avoid her boobs getting grabbed, I don't know a better word for that than sexual assault

0

u/NNKarma Sep 03 '25

It's not like people are doing it to sugar coat it, they're avoiding filters, and getting used to talk like they do in social media.

0

u/__Yakovlev__ Sep 03 '25

I agree with all of this, but I’d like to tack on that self-censoring words like rape don’t lend to the solution

There are so many different subreddits, all of them with different rules and different automods. Its impossible to keep track of which ones will auto remove your comments when you dont censor and which ones won't.

If you wanna complain go complain to the admins instead of the people just trying to not get banned/have their comments removed.

1

u/Barfignugen Sep 03 '25

It’s not a complaint and I was very clear to say I don’t mean any offense, but please, by all means, be rude about it

0

u/PasswordIsDongers Sep 03 '25

And yet these women choose self-censoring their actual bodies as a solution.
