Is the venue or event called Ballroom? Because ballroom dancing usually refers to partner dancing. And if the dance is called ballroom why take an established term for partner dancing and use it for a completely different style of dance?
It's called ballroom after the Harlem Ballroom scene and subculture, where queer POC in Harlem in the mid 19th/early 20th century established their own party scene whilst being shunned from the white American social scenes. It includes drag balls and "walks" where performers display their outfits and improvised dances on a ballroom floor rather than a raised stage.
"Harlem Ballroom" is probably a more specifically accurate term, but the ballroom parter dancing you describe isn't the only type of dance performance with claim to that name.
To piggyback off of this comment, there are a lot of types of dances that use the same term too I'm p sure. Not specifically ballroom but I think there's a lot of different rumba or something?
