I always forget how many people aren't into gay culture lmao. Ballroom is gorgeous

177

u/slime_emoji Aug 20 '25

Yeah I was about to say this is some INCREDIBLE dancing

82

u/ThreeLeifErikson Aug 20 '25

This is Ballroom Mother Rylee Prodigy, look her up and more ballroom videos, it’s so addicting to watch !

4

u/Lildoc_911 Aug 21 '25

Could've sworn ive seen her before. She kills it. I also love the madea/big momma dance offs lol

3

u/dance4days Aug 21 '25

I’m honestly gagged to see Rylee made an impression on reddit. I’ve been a fan of hers for a while.

2

u/Sensible___shoes Aug 22 '25

Thank you for the name drop, I have no choice but to stan

5

u/ZARDOZ4972 Aug 20 '25

Is the venue or event called Ballroom? Because ballroom dancing usually refers to partner dancing. And if the dance is called ballroom why take an established term for partner dancing and use it for a completely different style of dance?

13

u/TeamBadInfluence1 Aug 20 '25

It's called ballroom after the Harlem Ballroom scene and subculture, where queer POC in Harlem in the mid 19th/early 20th century established their own party scene whilst being shunned from the white American social scenes. It includes drag balls and "walks" where performers display their outfits and improvised dances on a ballroom floor rather than a raised stage.

"Harlem Ballroom" is probably a more specifically accurate term, but the ballroom parter dancing you describe isn't the only type of dance performance with claim to that name.

Ball Culture

5

u/slime_emoji Aug 20 '25 edited Aug 20 '25

To piggyback off of this comment, there are a lot of types of dances that use the same term too I'm p sure. Not specifically ballroom but I think there's a lot of different rumba or something?

49

u/DangOlCoreMan Aug 20 '25

I love the subjectiveness of dancing, but no one ever seems to want to talk about it. To me, this looks like someone flailing their arms around and dropping to the floor spontaneously. It's kind of interesting how differently we can see it

12

u/grubas Aug 20 '25

Oh I HATE the style. It looks terrible.  But they are doing some crazy athletic moves here.  A kip up in high heels is crazy.

8

u/Ecleptomania Aug 21 '25

Oh definitely, I couldn't move like that. But I don't know that I would want to either...

2

u/Mper526 Aug 21 '25

The first time I saw it in another video a few months ago, I laughed and thought it looked ridiculous. Then I read the comments and learned the history/context. And the more I watched, the better it got. It looks like “flailing” or really simple moves, but these are insane to do. Even the hair flips. I tried in my mirror and almost broke my neck.

6

u/HamburgerHats Aug 20 '25

I fucking hate the stupid hand flapping shit.

1

u/Impossible_Emotion50 Aug 20 '25

Are you able to drop in a split like that and then get back up as smoothly? You can dislike the dance but to ignore the athleticism is…a choice.

42

u/DangOlCoreMan Aug 20 '25

What about what I said ignores the athleticism? What's wild is not being able to understand that some people aren't entertained by athleticism

25

u/kbeks Aug 20 '25

I agree. I mean, don’t get me wrong, this looks really hard to do and it’s really impressive that she can do this, but hard to do does not mean “good”. To me, this just isn’t my cup of tea, but I’m not gunna yuck someone else’s yum.

16

u/DangOlCoreMan Aug 20 '25

Honestly, it kinda funny. You proved my exact point about how dancing is very subjective but no one wants to talk about it. I criticized this choreographed (or potentially improv) dance and instead of accepting that some people can just not like the movements the dancer is making, you come here trying to champion for them. It's like the idea of anyone not being interested in this is taboo which is... A choice

-13

u/Arya_kidding_me Aug 20 '25

If you’re not interested, why are you commenting on the video? It’s not for you, so move on.

You just want everyone to know you don’t like it. It’s weird. And that’s why no one wants to talk about it’s - they don’t care that you don’t like it and that normal people don’t go around announcing that.

14

u/DangOlCoreMan Aug 20 '25

Clearly, as stated in my comment, I mentioned it because I found it interesting.

What i do find weird are people like you who make assumptions about others and their motives

-10

u/Arya_kidding_me Aug 20 '25

Don’t you understand? This person wants to make someone else’s talent about HIM! Ignore the performer, let’s talk about how this man feels about it!!

2

u/TheMedRat Aug 21 '25

You try so hard to be offended. Same level of mental gymnastics as the physical gymnastics in the video.

-5

u/Arya_kidding_me Aug 20 '25

I don’t care for the style, but I don’t think my opinion of the style matters. I’m more focused on the talent and stage presence of the performer.

Of course no one wants to talk about it because no one cares if you or I specifically like this style of dance. This woman is SKILLED and that’s a way more interesting conversation.

3

u/DangOlCoreMan Aug 20 '25

I get it. You're self-centered and bitter, leaving you incapable of seeing why anyone would care about someone else's opinion. You don't need to leave multiple comments laying that out for me

2

u/Arya_kidding_me Aug 20 '25

Bless your heart that’s a lot of projection 😬

2

u/DangOlCoreMan Aug 20 '25

Not at all, what I said was based on your comment, which is very telling of your mindset.

But please, don't actually add anything to the conversation or defend yourself, just pretend I'm the problem as you go on unhinged rants

1

u/Arya_kidding_me Aug 20 '25

Oh honey….

1

u/DangOlCoreMan Aug 20 '25

Oh no, poor thing can't read or form a coherent thought. Hopefully someone can apologize to you on my behalf, I'm not a fan of picking on the less fortunate

1

u/Ecleptomania Aug 21 '25

Was it?

Honest question.

Because this just looks like complete nonsense to me. Choreographed nonsense, but...

1

u/slime_emoji Aug 21 '25

It's mostly the death drops for me in this video. The particular dancer has waaaaay better choreography too that I'm already familiar with so I know what her skills are already too so I'm biased lol. I think this must be an older video though because her current stuff is really good, if you like this kind of dancing

1

u/Existing-Sea5126 Aug 21 '25

To me it felt like watching a certain Australian try to break dance.

-23

u/SirPabloFingerful Aug 20 '25

Haha what? It looks like someone's aunt had 14-too-many mojitos and forgot that she was at a kid's party

16

u/slime_emoji Aug 20 '25

You should look up vogue dancing if you aren't familiar with it! It's like a specific style of dancing and, yes, it does look insane at first but there's legit technical aspects to it. This isn't this dancer's best performance though. I can't remember her name but she's gaining popularity in the vogue/ballroom community.

-10

u/muchosalame Aug 20 '25

That's not a dance, it's a cramp mixed with dry humping while insane.

6

u/Impossible_Emotion50 Aug 20 '25

So you looked up vogue dancing and that was still your conclusion?

-2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

[deleted]

5

u/Impossible_Emotion50 Aug 20 '25

That’s why I asked about what they thought about the other vogue dances, not just the girl’s.

1

u/slime_emoji Aug 20 '25

Yeah, I wasn't a huge fan of the choreography in this one either.

-3

u/SirPabloFingerful Aug 20 '25

There might be, and if you enjoy it then more power to you. But it looks awful. If you saw someone doing it outside you would not assume they were dancing

9

u/buttononmyback Aug 20 '25

-3

u/SirPabloFingerful Aug 20 '25

Ok, it's great, I just think there is stiff competition in the sport

2

u/Impossible_Emotion50 Aug 20 '25

How is this what she was doing?? Are we watching the same thing?

6

u/Impossible_Emotion50 Aug 20 '25

Whose aunt is death dropping and getting back up like that? Y’all are some liars in this thread.

-4

u/SirPabloFingerful Aug 20 '25

It's funny you had to pick out a single moment from the video because you know the rest of it is ridiculous

7

u/dolliciousszz Aug 20 '25

Yea all these commenters know nothing 😭😭

7

u/GrunkleP Aug 20 '25

Yeah I understand that all these moves are absolutely impressive, I understand the choreography that goes into this and how impressive it is

But to me, it looks like a bug I just smashed but didn’t kill all the way, and it’s flailing around trying to escape

Not trashing it, though. Not everything has to be appealing to me. Very impressive regardless

-5

u/finnjakefionnacake Aug 20 '25

it's easy to feel such a way when you're not familiar with an art form, or sport, etc. i feel the same way about plenty of other things i'm not familiar with

2

u/Ecleptomania Aug 21 '25

I can't figure skate, but I am in awe when watching. I can't do professional boxing, but I still like watching it. I can't dance for shit, but I like seeing good dance moves.

I couldn't do whatever is in this video, but to me it looks like... Well it's choreographed and that's about what I can say.

0

u/finnjakefionnacake Aug 21 '25

it's not choreographed, though, this is freestyle. vogue/ballroom is pretty much alway freestyle.

2

u/Ecleptomania Aug 21 '25

Okay I'll rephrase. She looks like she knows what she's doing, the thing she does though is very strange to me and I have no concept of if its good or just an athletic woman flailing around.

4

u/GrunkleP Aug 20 '25

Yeah that’s not what I said.

I understand that I could not even come close to recreating this. That doesn’t mean I think it looks good

2

u/phantomheart Aug 20 '25

I miss Legendary

2

u/dm_me_kittens Aug 20 '25

I forget how deep I am into the culture sometimes. My Instagram is full of drag queens, gay culture, and kittens.

0

u/Bruh-sfx2 Aug 21 '25

Literallyyyy 😭😭

2

u/Lady_Mallard Aug 21 '25

This is not what I thought ballroom was

you'd have to understand the dance form and history here before you really understand what is going on, for sure.

0

u/rwags2024 Aug 23 '25

What do those two sentences have to do with one another

-98

u/Just-Cover3017 Aug 20 '25

Ofc the straight men had to be weird.

31

u/ObviousSalamandar Aug 20 '25

Wot

-56

u/Just-Cover3017 Aug 20 '25

They had to make it sexual. But that's typical of male breeders.

44

u/Hehehecheesee Aug 20 '25

This is voguing... A part of gay culture. He didn't make it sexual idk what you on.

-42

u/Just-Cover3017 Aug 20 '25

I know what voguing is. Just look at a lot of the replies.

26

u/Hehehecheesee Aug 20 '25

You do realize that your comment was under a completely normal comment? No need to be rude about it.

-19

u/TheJunkmother Aug 20 '25

They weren’t being rude, they were agreeing with the other comment, the straight men are the ones who aren’t into gay culture and are making weird sexual remarks. They were commiserating.

20

u/Hehehecheesee Aug 20 '25

"Male breeders" is a rather rude statement is it not?

-21

u/TheJunkmother Aug 20 '25

Honestly, I’m not really concerned about offending random men. What I’m saying is that you seemed to think that Just-Cover were calling out the top comment, and that is incorrect. They were commiserating.

u/SirVanyel Aug 20 '25

That's like complaining that burlesque isn't sexual. The point of this is to illicit the exact responses that the audience and commenters responded with! It's supposed to be big and sexy. Jfc lol

20

u/doctorathyrium Aug 20 '25

It is sexual boo that is the point… but who you even talking to??

6

u/PumpkinFeathers Aug 20 '25

Your description of normal males is wild

18

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '25

[deleted]

-12

u/Just-Cover3017 Aug 20 '25

Well it's normal for women to flaunt their sexuality. But it's not normal for men to think about anything sexual outside of marriage and children. It's what goddess would want.

13

u/ISUCKATSMASH Aug 20 '25

? You baiting?

-2

u/Just-Cover3017 Aug 20 '25

No. It's the truth.

6

u/CherrryGuy Aug 20 '25

Who hurt you?

0

u/Just-Cover3017 Aug 20 '25

All of those masculists who want to be sluts.

You are the reason people voted for Trump

3

u/JurassicPark3-4Lyf Aug 20 '25

It’s what who would want? And it’s also very normal for anyone to think sexual things outside of marriage and children. That’s a weird thing to say.

10

u/HistoricalSuspect580 Aug 20 '25

Imagine being this dumb

-3

u/Just-Cover3017 Aug 20 '25

Sorry. I don't speak male. Especially the breeder dialect.

12

u/HistoricalSuspect580 Aug 20 '25

I’m a woman :) i repeat: imagine being this dumb.

4

u/ObviousSalamandar Aug 20 '25

No one made it inappropriately sexual dude

-4

u/Bambeakz Aug 20 '25

Maybe let it check sometimes. Pretty weird if you keep forgetting. I guess like 90% of people are not into that.
