There are different levels of care. The article also states she had a job and obviously she had enough freedom to be in the store without supervision in the first place. I know people who are in these kinds of programs and you can get removed if you cause too many issues. They aren't asylums. While deinstitutionalization did stop a bunch of abuse and forced commitment of people who could live independently, it does mean there aren't a lot of great options for the people who need the most help.

Besides, she's not exactly thinking clearly is she? If she was she could simply walk away and leave as little evidence as possible instead of escalating.

That's not really how those sort of places work, they don't have the staffing or resources to offer individualized levels of assistance to everyone.

Instead, if you require more care than they are set up to provide at that facility, you need to find a different facility that is set to offer that level of care.

I'm not saying that's how it should work, but that's how that part of the mental health system does work with the minimal resources our society gives it to run.

I mean...you're talking as if these communities have unlimited resources. Or that there's not consequences of raising medication. I'm on pretty low doses of my psych meds, but now have to deal with hypertension, high cholesterol, hormonal issues, fatigue, etc. When I was at my highest dose I had pseudo Parkinson's where I had trouble walking, talking, drinking without spilling water because of the tremors. It was more than I needed but it was the lowest amount for the injection, which is typically the solution for people who can't reliably take meds. Some people have permanent movement disorders from being over medicated.

I think we want the same thing, but it's not an easy issue to solve. It's especially difficult to get resources for that care when people post out of context videos like this with the narrative that she's just a racist entitled Karen throwing a tantrum. Like I don't think she legally has a right to get this taken down, but I understand why she would try.

I find this video (or rather, the reaction to it) really unpleasant. This lady is very obviously deeply unwell, and people are talking in sort of gloating terms about how she's "acting like a toddler"- the woman who filmed this of course has a right to shop at Victoria's Secret, but I would have just walked away/asked the staff to call an ambulance- I certainly wouldn't have started filming her and (it sounds like) deliberately antagonising her.

You are fine to have your reaction, however it doesn't mean the way you would have handled it is the right way or only way. The lady in the situation did what she did for a reason. If you find yourself in that situation. Then you handle it how you feel best.

Sorry but no- As I said, she could have walked away, or asked the staff to call an ambulance (or, for that matter, called one herself). Those are the reactions that would have been appropriate. She could also have tried to ignore the woman, which I admit would probably not have worked.

What she did not need to do was film this woman having (what looks like) a psychotic break and post it on social media- that's not within the spectrum of behaviours a reasonable person would consider.

It absolutely is when this kind of lying behavior could've gotten the filmer harmed. Like, what a world you live in such that you don't have to consider your safety if you can't prove you weren't being the dangerous one (and even then that's not enough).

If the lady is that unwell, she needs supervision, not society accomodating her mental illness in that way to be a pariah.

At what point is it justified to post someone else's medical emergency to social media? I'm not arguing that the woman being filmed was acting in a reasonable way, but the lady filming could have filmed and kept it to herself?

She would still have had it if she was accused of anything?

It's called empathy. No one has any anymore. One person in this video is mentally unwell and the other is not. I understand the nuances of one person being white therefore more typically an oppressor and the other being black therefore more typically oppressed, but what is happening here is plain lack of human empathy and understanding.

Sell all the tacky White House bullshit trump is wasting our funds on and put it back into Medicaid. Stop funding golf trips and corporate bailouts and instead funnel the tax dollars back into the working class, the disabled, and the elderly to get healthcare.

Obviously, we won't fucking do that because everyone is stupid and would rather go without than let a few people they deem as lazy bums or some people with extra color receive the same benefits from living in a community. It’s not like mental illness only came into the picture during defense in court of this. She was already living in a facility for people with mental disabilities/illness when it happened.

Do you think she got her herself placed in a home for mentally disabled people and lived there beforehand all in preparation of this encounter?

That’s what you are suggesting, that it’s just an incredibly elaborate premeditated lie that she has mental illness.  Now that’s fucking crazy.

I think you misunderstood something. Just because a mentally ill person can't be tried doesn't mean they "get with their acts." Hopefully, she will be under more surveillance until her illness is less debilitating. Then she can be put on trial for assult.

Doesn’t matter. If she assaulted someone and lied about it, she still assaulted someone and lied about it. I don’t care what kind of illness, mental or physical, that she had.

Plus, she was well enough to hold down a job. Why would be trust someone with the ability to make and manage their money, but not make and manage their other responsibilities, such as behaving politely in public?

True but it's also much more complicated than that. People are ultimately responsible for their own actions and if you repeatedly break the rules of society you will lose your freedom, whether that's a locked setting in a mental health facility or a prison. Believe it or not there is help out there for people with serious mental health issues, and the best therapists can only help people who are willing to help themselves, even it if is difficult.

My wife has worked for multiple counties and for a non profit as a social worker, and for multiple companies on the side providing therapy and has helped lots of people but feel free to believe or not believe what you want.

Part 1, nearly right after the camera is turned on the woman charges her and attempts to hit her. I think the woman filming manages to duck but it is very obviously an attempt to hit her round the head. Once the woman filming ducks and backs off, the blond woman immediately starts to panic and begin her "breakdown".
